If we, as fans, don't care about refs sucking, then they're going to keep sucking.

I give Finland full marks, but bad reffing is a blight on this otherwise magnificent sport, and though the NHL has loads of the same issues, the IIHF brings it to a significantly higher level.

NHL reffing is at least good enough to almost invariably never have it effect the Stanley Cup Finals, let alone consistently so.
yeah I agree, it is okay to hate on the refs but the win was deserved

Just want to congratulate Finland on the gold and a great tournament in general. They didn't have the star-power, but a very solid group who know how to play as a team. Lots of credit of course goes to the coaching staff.

In general, the games seemed very well organised and the fans brought a great atmosphere to the arenas. Looked like fun.

We said. Exactly.

The thing should be that individual talent doesn't matter, especially in short tournaments like this. Yes, maybe Manninen did have a consistent 10 game stretch, but Finland won because they had a team full of players who bought into the system and worked hard. Canada almost beat them because they did the same thing. It really doesn't matter who has the more talented players. It's about who has the better team.

I'll still argue that Canada's team at this tournament was at least on-par with Finland, even with the result, and even if that result was completely untainted. Losing due to a 4-on-3 OT goal is not normally a very clear decider on whether one team is better than the other.
Or let's put it this way, talent matters to some extent. Italy or even Slovakia is not going to win this tournament even if they play as well as a team as Canada or Finland, simply because their talent is lacking and limited to a couple of players.

Finland has developed enough talent over the last ten or so years that they can win these kind of tournaments even without their best NHL players present, provided that they play a good team game. Same as Canada in that respect, except Canada obviously still has more individual talent if you look at the stats of every player. But it's not a big enough difference to decide single games in a tournament.

Win or Lose- I do not lose any sleep over Canada not winning the WHC. It is a tournament European fans care about, while in North America we are too busy watching the Stanley Cup Finals. We always send our C Team, while Europeans send their A or B teams, since they care more about the tournament. Today's Gold Medal Game was the first Game I have watched Team Canada play.

That being said if the roles were reversed, and Canada had won the Gold Medal on home ice today, with a terrible high sticking call, that cost us two goals along with a OT Dive by a Finnish Player leading to the Gold Medal Winner on a PP- I would be the first to say Canada should not be pumping their chest out and saying "We are the Best". All the other countries and their fans would be screaming that Canada probably paid off the officials, if the roles were reversed.

Yet Finland fans on Social Media have no problem pumping their chest, and calling Canadian fans sore losers, since they beat Canada's C Team with their A team, with the most corrupt officiating I have ever seen in a Gold Medal Final. Also, unfortunately our Starting Goalie also got hurt, and Finland had to face our Backup Goalie.

Maybe the European officials had money on Finland winning on home ice, or maybe they are tired of Canada winning this European tournament again with our C Team. Even the OT Penalty against Canada, was more of a Soccer Dive by the Finnish player. I have never complained about the Refs, but the missed calls against Finland and the penalties that Finland were rewarded, makes me think that this Game was already decided yesterday.

The IIHF officials probably wanted the European home team to win in their home country, and the celebrations that will take place afterwards. The officials wanted the story book ending for Finland. I feel sick for Sillinger, since there was no high stick by him against the Finnish player. Even the OT call to me was a Dive by the Finnish player. Today's game is the reason why Canada should never host this Minor League Tournament, with its minor league officiating.

No idea what play you're talking about, so I can't be sure if you're bullshitting me or not...

Look it up. The typical (homer) caster was first thinking that was the penalty, but looking at the replay it sure could have been called as well.

And to put this out there just to clear things up: Wrong high sticking call and Björninen dove on the overtime.

Some of my takes watching games with TSN stream. Vatanen was really shaky last two games and had some really uncharacteristic blunders with the puck. I remember his being quite reliable back im NHL and in JYP before NHL. The mics of the referees made them look very amateurish this final game. The bad call was amplified by statements like "Finland challenged the goal.. " "Call on the ice was no goal", "Team US.. Canada". I was honestly considering that he was talking like a drunk person and thinking how much drinking would impact your skating.. never drunk and skated, so no clue. THE call was bad. Kind of left me feeling guilty for supporting Finland even if they did nothing wrong themselves and felt good that Canada got it to overtime.. Finland was likely the best team in this tournament, but it would have felt better with well refereed game. Heiskanen was absolute beast last 2 games. Barzal was super scary every time he touched the puck.

Canada was good, even better at times but Finland did it and deserves it.

What's more left to do?

I guess we're waiting for NHL'ers and do the same.

We are at the top of the hockey world and ready to challenge best on best.

Let's just say that the refs are sht nowdays and we need to get them changed, but blaming a loss on refs is kinda cowardly

Twenty years ago, the Finns did not have a winning culture, so they lost to the Czech Republic in 2001. Now they have it, they have a good production of talents and they are already building a winning culture on the WJC and U18. It helps a lot to attract kids to hockey, it's a side effect of this win. The only question that remains is whether the competition will find a way to beat Finland in the playoffs.

tbh Finland is very good, we had a very even match
5-1 is an absurd prediction. I legit think the game could easily have gone either way, if the reffing was at least competent, and I think Finns should be just as strongly calling on how it's terrible, since it's taking away what could have been everyone talking about how great a win this was for them.

Instead, it's all about the refs. And that ruins everyone's fun.

Dude we have literally been there and done that, so please stop.

I didn't watch the tournament at all but a quick look at Finland's roster tells me that this is nowhere near their A team. So you at least are very much a sore loser.
