Some other deviations from my data and save percentage in the league

Joonas Korpisalo year after year seems to rank from pretty GOOD to just average on my percentages. For some reason, he doesn't fail the eye test for me and allow an alarmingly high number of goals I count stoppable. I only have him down for 4 goals stoppable and he's allowed 22. And his save percentage is yet again in the toilet at .894%.

Over next to him, Merzlikins usually has a higher count on my percentages than Korpisalo does, but his save percentage is always far superior behind the same team. But Merzlikins has a significantly better than league average percentage for me this year with just 6 stoppable on 27 allowed, just not quite as good as Korpisalo's. He was also maybe a little worse than average on my count last year or just at an average percentage, but his save percentage was way above league average. And in Merzlikins rookie year, I had him down for a very high percentage of goals stoppable and yet his save percentage was like .923%.

One other note

I am absolutely convinced that Matt Murray is the worst goalie in the NHL, other than maybe a few backups that don't play all that much. And not including call ups that don't really have a full time role, like Hutchinson and Dell, Wedgewood, etc, guys like that.

In his two years in Ottawa, he's remained remarkably consistent with me now having counted 40 (FORTY) goals stoppable on 98 allowed as a Senator between these last two seasons. 32 in 79 in 20-21 (40.5%) and now 8 on 19 (42.10%) for this year. Last year he had an .893% and this year he's an .890%, but with only 6 games played so far.

He led the league last year in my stoppable goal count for most of he year and I'm pretty sure he reached 30 about a month before anybody else did. He hit 30, got injured for a month or maybe even 5 weeks shortly after that and I'm pretty sure no one else even reached 30 until after he came back from injury. Martin Jones eventually finished with 34 last year and beat Murray out, but Murray missed quite a few weeks. Blackwood eventually got to 33 goals I counted stoppable last year, which was the second highest count in the league, but I don't think Blackwood had a really bad percentage. He just played a lot of games, as well allowed a lot of goals. And Hellebuyck tied his 32, but he played way more games (he might have played more than any other goalie in the league last year) and had a WAY lower percentage, since he only racked those up from playing so many games and thus allowing a lot of goals relative to other goalies in the league because of it.

And most of the Ottawa goalies that have been his teammates have outplayed him in that time.

In the 2 years I was doing this while Murray played on Pittsburgh, I had him down for 34 stoppable on 129 goals allowed (26.35% which was solid and better than average) and a .919% save percentage (good) for 18-19. In 19-20 with Pittsburgh I had him down with 33 stoppable on 107 allowed (30.84% which was worse than league average and bad but not the worst or as bad as the last two years) and he had an .899% that year (also bad) in save percentage.

So in conclusion, there’s a good chance injuries broke him down, that’s debatable how it happened, but what’s not debatable is that he’s really cratered and is now terrible in his last 65 games or so and over 2 years and he’s really bad.

Just came in his thread to post last night's goals against review and didn't see my softy of the night for Friday's games and I knew I had posted it. I posted it yesterday afternoon on the out of town thread.

Softy of the night is this Roman Josi goal on Bernier

It beats out the Ovechkin goal on Knight and the Dubois goal on Talbot simply because this was from a way worse angle AND was just a wrister and not a slapper.

He should have poke checked if he was gonna play it like that, but I can’t nail him on that. If I gave a goalie a stoppable goal on those, I think I’d be counting about 35%-40% of the goals around the league as stoppable and not only 28%.

If Binnington doesn't get softy of the night.
no…that's just bad luck……….instinct on a 'routine' dump and a bad bounce

(dont know what the other goals for consideration are)

a pinball goal
I thought it was bad luck too, but it really looks bad.

The only other contender would be the Sam Reinhart goal on Samsonov. It just so happened to be the game winner with 15 seconds left in regulation, after the Capitals blew a 4-1 lead and wound up losing 5-4. That was also a bad goal that snuck between the goalie and the post or maybe it was just right through the goalie. I'd have to watch it again. I watched everything last night and track everything in my notes usually on the night of, but I'm too tired to type it up by the end of the night. And that was the only goal I nailed Samsonov on for that entire game and he did face 51 shots, but that was an ugly one.

Bobrovsky allowed a pretty poor goal from behind the goal line, where he just took himself out of position and took forever to get back and the guy banked it in off of his skate from behind the net. I couldn't seriously give that the softy of the night though, unless it was one of 2-3 goals I counted stoppable for the entire night.

Definitely bad luck, but man if he had his eyes just a little bit lower he would have had this one.

Softy of the night is this Milan Lucic goal on Cal Petersen

Goalies really need to stop getting beaten 5-hole by him this year. Nico Daws was the first and now it’s happening about once a week. It was between this goal and Casey Mittelstadt on Bobrovsky. Both weak 5-hole goals, but this was worse. It just wasn’t even a very good shot at all. I don’t know how it even got through Petersen. Looks like he was just lazy with his stick.

And here’s the softy of the night for Wednesday, December 1st. It wouldn’t let me post it the other night cause something was wrong with the link. This is Travis Dermott on Jonas Johansson.

The point you made about MBW and the change in goalie coach seems well taken to me. I'm curious what he thinks about it.
