Softy of the night is this Dylan Strome goal on Mackenzie Blackwood

I really didn’t wanna give him the softy of the night again, but none of three on Georgiev were worth a softy of the night over this, and the Haula goal on Fleury did deflect a little bit.

This is seriously the most “Blackwood was screened” goal I’ve seen him allow yet this year. This is a Blackwood classic. Screened by guys that are barely even in his sight lines and beaten on a point shot (almost from the blue line) through the five hole.

Figured this is the best place to ask for @Bleedred ‘s thoughts, now that we have some games played through the beginning of this year.

At what amount of retention do you think it would make sense for the Devils to target Gibson. The term is rough, but I’d have to imagine he’s at least Vanecek level right now (3.4 AAV), if you can get him down to that.

I can’t help but think he’d make a good 1A/1B tandem with VV and would be a good opportunity at redemption for him. It would also allow Schmid/Daws to develop slowly over the next two seasons in the minors, while VV plays out the rest of his deal.

No retention makes sense for us.

Gibson isn't good.

He may not be as bad as Anaheim makes him look, but he also isn't particularly good anymore.

Are Daws and Schmid even still waiver eligible for the next two seasons? Schmid will be 25 years old by the time Vitek's deal is done. If Schmid needs until 25 to get to the NHL full time then he's likely not going to be anything more than a Scott Wedgewood.

Gibson has been outplayed more years than not by his backups in Anaheim since his decline began. This doesn't necessarily mean they're better than he is, they are probably benefiting from limited usage and likely wouldn't have posted better numbers if they played as many games as him.

With how many BAD goalies/AHL caliber goalies are in the NHL this year in full time roles, I can't say Gibson is nearly the worst goalie in the league, but he's also nothing special and is average at the absolute best. He's probably not worth many more wins than Schmid, and that's considering Schmid continues to play at a level nearly as bad as he's played to start this year.

I'd stay status quo for the rest of this year and just reevaluate after this year. Trust me, we don't want Gibson here for another 3 years and whatever is left of this one.

Fair enough. I wonder if Ducks cut bait with him after this year and buy him out. Feels like some team out there would give him a shot as a cheap backup in hopes that he would rekindle something.

Feels like in an ideal world, Fitzgerald would grab an expiring UFA like Comrie or Reimer to not force Schmid into NHL starts for the rest of the year. The way teams are stashing goalies I doubt anyone gives up a goalie though.

EDIT: As far as I can tell from CapFriendly, as long as Schmid or Daws don’t play 60 NHL games (Schmid is at 36 right now and Daws is at 25), they won’t require waivers until 2025-26. Not sure how it would work if they hit 60 games in 2024-25 if their waiver eligibility immediately kicks in.

To be honest, looking at that, I would argue Devils should seriously consider adding a back-up to VV so Schmid can play AHL games and extend his eligibility.

Yeah, Gibson would be worth it for someone if he were bought out and signed to a cheaper deal. Maybe he's someone Tampa could want to try and ease Vasilevskiy's workload.

Basically, for better or for worse we're probably stuck with what we have, at least until the deadline, if not until next year.

The only alternative if Schmid doesn't get it together (and it's not a pleasant one) is to send him to the AHL and call up one of Kallgren or Kinkaid. Neither are NHL goalies at this point. Kallgren has been miserable in his NHL stints with Toronto, and Kinkaid has played fine when called up to start a game or two in a pinch, but if he's gonna be here starting NHL games at least once a week, I don't think it will be too pleasant.

Edited the post after you replied, but Schmid and Daws waiver eligibility is four years from their first pro game or 60 NHL games.

That would put them at the start of the 2025-26 season unless they hit 60 games. Schmid is at 36 and Daws is at 25 NHL games. Not sure if waiver eligibility kicks in mid-season if Schmid were to play his 60th game next year, but something to keep an eye on.

Might make some sense for Fitzgerald to be a bit aggressive in adding someone mid-season who can prevent Schmid from hitting his 60 games too early. If UPL and Levi steal the show in Buffalo or Knight has a bounce back in Florida, Comrie & Stolarz could be nice options to end the year.

I feel like Comrie is almost definitely a downgrade to Schmid, but I've often times been intrigued by the possibility of adding Stolarz.

But the one big problem with him is he's very injury prone.

Neither guy would be a long term solution.

It’s just really to buy some time so Schmid doesn’t have to play NHL minutes this year. Can always call Schmid up in January/February/March when there are a lot of games and run 3 goalies if need be.

I guess they may do that at some point with Kallgren or Kinkaid, but I don’t think anyone really want to see them at the NHL level.

Softy of the night is this Elias Pettersson goal on Kevin Lankinen

It’s the first goal of the Pettersson’s three in this video. For some reason they didn’t have video for just the goal in question. Of all the goals that couldn’t have its own video it was this one. They couldn’t have cut out the empty net goal or was that significant because it was the hat trick goal?

Preds Goaltender Lankinen is so leaky with his goaltending.

All the goals were stoppable, imo.

@Bleedred

here you go!

awesome thread by the way!!
Thanks! I appreciate that!

In years past NHL.com would have videos for every goal scored and I would embed it that way. Now for some reason you can't share/embed the videos like you could in years past. I'm not at all sure what that is. The new site sucks (new app is a bomb site but that's for another rant) and you can't do that anymore. So I've had to switch over to ESPN for that (@Louskoolaid89 was the one who showed me that), but for some reason, they sometimes don't have a video of every single goal, particularly in games where there's a ton of goals scored. 7 goals isn't exactly a ton though.

If I can't find one on ESPN again then I guess yahoo sports is the next place I look?

There were 2 goals that went through him with a body right in front of him. I think one even went off a body or stick, then off another guy's head and off of him and in.

I'm usually not generous and forgiving of every little screen (like Blackwood supporters!:sarcasm:) but I thought with a guy's ass right in his face that it's worth a pass.

Softy of the night is this Steven Lorentz goal on James Reimer

A lot of people would have said Vitek for the third Wild goal, but this was hilariously bad. What a nothing shot to lose a shutout over and a painful one in a game where you only give up one non-empty net goal.
