Goals against review for the March 6th, 2022 games

Blues vs Devils: 3 goals against Husso, 0 stoppable. 2 goals against Daws, 1 stoppable.

Kings vs Sabres: 1 goal against Tokarski, 1 stoppable. Petersen gets the shutout.

Stars vs Wild: 3 goals against Oettinger, 0 stoppable. 4 goals against Kahkonen, 3 stoppable.

Lightning vs Blackhawks: 3 goals against Vasilevskiy, 1 stoppable. 6 goals against Fleury, 3 stoppable.

Rangers vs Jets: 1 goal against Shesterkin, 0 stoppable. 4 goals against Hellebuyck, 0 stoppable.

Kraken vs Hurricanes: 3 goals against Grubauer, 0 stoppable. 2 goals against Raanta, 0 stoppable.

Senators vs Golden Knights: 2 goals against Forsberg, 0 stoppable. 1 goal against Lehner, 1 stoppable.

Sharks vs Ducks: 3 goals against Sawchenko, 0 stoppable. 2 goals against Stolarz, 1 stoppable.

So that's 40 goals scored on goalies, 11 are stoppable. That's 28% of the goals scored were stoppable. Combined save percentages were .919%.

If you were going to target a goalie to add this offseason taking the realistic parameters into account - age, cap hit, acquisition cost, etc. Who would you want NJ to go after?

I think about it every day and I can't really come up with any definitively, although there's probably somebody who will end up available that isn't even on my radar.

Husso has been great this year, but was horrific last year.

Jack Campbell is a guy I wanted a few years ago, but he'll probably get a stupid contract and I'm not sure he's good enough to be your clear cut starter.

For some reason I feel like Stolarz will end up here at some point. Maybe it's just because he's from New Jersey. He's played very sparingly in the NHL and this is really his first year of having a full time NHL job (he's been a third stringer and has gotten call ups for a few years though) and he's been better than Gibson, but he's also sheltered in a backup role. He could be horrific if given a brunt of the starts.

Ullmark is on a bad contract (too much term), but could be a possibility just because they have their guy in Swayman, I don't understand why they gave him 4 years. I still think Boston holds onto him for at least one more year.

Francouz is an intriguing option. He was injured for over a year, but has played very well since coming back from injury.

Kahkonen wouldn't be the worst option, but I thought he looked BAD last year, despite a strong save percentage.

Here's guys we definitely need to stay away from though

Brian Elliott - Does this need an explanation?

Martin Jones - Really?

Greiss - Old and declining

Forsberg - FLUKE year, really overachieving. Has been in and out of the NHL for 7-8 years now and can never really keep a job. Only with the Sens right now because of the terrible Matt Murray contract they signed and him not working out. And he absolutely does NOT pass the eye test at all. Gives up too many weak goals, even this year. He's almost like this year's version of what Mike Smith was last year, only about 10 years younger and it's not a shortened season. He's a guy that might be able to cut it as your backup, but nothing better. We don't need a backup.

Samsonov - STFA. This is guy is like Blackwood, only he don't have the one season where he was the starter and played well. He's like Blackwood if 19-20 never happened for Blackwood, because his 19-20 was like Blackwood's 18-19. And his 20-21 and 21-22 have been like Blackwood's 20-21 and 21-22, only not quite as bad as Blackwood's 21-22. His ceiling is probably higher than Blackwood's, but that's about it. Can't keep the starting job in Washington over another guy that really expected to do as much in the NHL and took quite a bit longer to make the NHL. The only time Samsonov looked good was when Holtby was still playing there and they had to give him all kinds of pity starts until his contract ended, despite Samsonov outplaying him, while very sparsely used.

Korpisalo - STAY. THE. f***. AWAY. This is guy SUCKS. He's been a shit goalie for almost his entire NHL career. The last time he had a really good season was when he was a rookie 6 years ago and had to play a decent amount of games because Bobrovsky was fighting injuries that year and had a poor season and Korpisalo was heavily outplaying him. Korpisalo ALWAYS gets outplayed by the other goalies on Columbus, every year since that year Bobrovsky had all the injuries and was bad back when he was a rookie. He passes my eye test and consistently ranks well in my stoppable goal percentages year after year, but he's a BAD goalie and the evidence is how EVERYBODY since 16-17 that he shares the net with seems to outplay him and a lot of times it's by A LOT! Somebody will probably sign this guy and it BETTER NOT BE US!

Monteambeault - NOOOOO!

Rittich - Just.......No.

Holtby - Gross

Halak - Old and burnt crispity.

Driedger - Nope. Not really an NHL goalie. Had two amazing years (as a sheltered backup) in Florida and that was the peak of it all. He's Keith Kinkaid, only with a higher ceiling, lower floor and an even shorter shelf life.

Vejmelka - f*** no. Another BAD goalie that's only here because Arizona isn't interested in putting anything competitive out on the ice.

Mrazek - f*** no. BAD goalie, has good years sometimes, mostly bad ones. Just....No!

Koskinen - Ho. Lee. f***. No! GTFO! Somebody will sign him for the NHL though. They shouldn't.....But they will.

DeSmith - Probably a decent backup. We don't need a backup.

Fleury - High reward, but a even higher risk.

Quick - No. This season probably keeps him in LA for the last year of his deal, but he overachieved early on and has regressed more towards where he is right now as a beat up, 36 year old goalie that's been poor for 4 years now.

Brossoit - f*** no. Another shitty guy that just moves around from team to team. Has a good year or two, but mostly just mediocre to bad. I don’t even think this guy is better than Wedgewood.

Kuemper - Gonna get a (probably) bad UFA contract. Has some injury troubles too, which has not been the case this year, but it has in recent years.

I don't think I even need to list someone like Craig Anderson, I doubt he's part of the plans and this might be it for him, but I thought the last 2 years were also. Regardless, I don't think we have to worry about even making a call to him. And I’m pretty sure we don’t have to worry about Fitzy acquiring somebody like Matt Murray. He’s just another version of Blackwood, only with a much higher peak, but that bubble burst years ago. Just injuries and poor play the last 3 years and has 2 years left after this. Even if bought out, I do not want him and I don’t think he’ll be here, but he was drafted by Pittsburgh when Tom was still there.

Cory Schneider - Would greatly enjoy considering him for goalie coach.

It's amazing how many meh to non-NHL caliber goalies are in the NHL. It's really getting to the point that beyond wingers, depth centers, and left handed defenders you have to grow your own at top six center, top four right handed defender, and goalie.

Softy of the night is this Brock Nelson goal on Pavel Francouz

Just from way too far out. Not a one timer. Made it one goal away from the Avs blowing a 4 goal lead in half a period. No screen or any traffic impeding him to make a save.

To my eyes the Smith goal on Kuemper looked stoppable. Didn't it sort of deflect in off his left leg pad? The shot didn't look hard and Kuemper didn't have his vision blocked. Just my observation.

That was an own goal off a Colorado stick that deflected it right in front.

One thing I have never done is give a goalie a stoppable goal on a shot that was put in by one of his teammates, even if it was a short side dribbler or leaker like that one was.

I might have if it was deflected from very FAR out, but that was way too close.

The only way I would have given that a stoppable goal was if Kuemper did something to create that chance in the first place, like gave the puck away or had a poor touch when winding it around the boards. And in that case, the actual way the puck ended up in the net wouldn't have had anything to do with what I marked it stoppable. I've done that the entire 4 years I've done this. I gave Hellebuyck two stoppable goals in a game a couple weeks ago on shots where it you had only seen the shot you'd be like ''What? Why? What's stoppable about that?''.

I remember somebody did that to Marty in one of his last few years here. One of the decline years, where it was easier to get on Marty than in years past when he was much better. I think Zubrus put it in the net and squeaked past Marty on the short side from close range and my thinking was ''There's no way I'm gonna blame the goalie when his own teammate did that''.

That's fair. I missed the deflection somehow even with the big fancy tv. Man am I old.

The race for most goals I've counted stoppable this year is not a particularly close one. It's Grubauer in the lead with 45 and second highest is Hellebuyck at 37.

The race for second place is a pretty excited one right now. Hellebuyck at 37, Merzlikins with 36, Koskinen with 35, Nedeljkovic with 35 and Fleury with 34. Koskinen has by far the highest percentage out of this whole bunch and probably out of any goalie that's played than 15-20 games this year. Hellebuyck has a better than league average, but he just plays so many games and has allowed the most goals in the league because he plays so many games, faces so many shots, etc. All in all I think I have 10 guys that have hit 30 or more so far, but that’s just doing a lazy skim.

Merzlikins and Nedeljkovic are just below my league average in percentage and Fleury is right around my league average in percentage, but I don't have their actual goals against totals in front of me. I'd have to look all of them up. I don't keep personal track of the goalies actual goals against number because the league does that for me.

Now this is only the second season that I've done this that will be an 82 game season. The last two were shortened. But the highest in 18-19, the last time we had an 82 game season before this was a tie between Martin Jones and Mikko Koskinen at 53. Koskinen would have won the tiebreaker though, as he did it in 7 fewer games and on 21 fewer goals allowed for a considerably higher percentage of goals counted stoppable.

Grubauer is almost definitely hitting 60, unless he’s shut down for the season real soon.

Koskinen has by far the highest percentage out of this whole bunch and probably out of any goalie that's played than 15-20 games this year.
Add another one for Koskinen. Let in a big time softie goal by TJ Oshie. Probably was feeling generous, as it secured 1000 points for Backstrom. What a nice guy!

Make that two for Koskinen. Both goals scored on him tonight are bad. He read my post before this game and saw that he’s not even in second or third place for most goals I’ve counted stoppable this year anymore. Then he allowed those two and now he’s tied for second again.

Either way, I have him down for a higher percentage than any of those guys. And that even includes Grubauer.

Pang doing commentary on TNT didn’t like either of those goals. He really ripped him for not being able to properly position his stick on that second goal and said he didn’t know the fundamentals of using his stick on either goal tonight lol. And that that goal should never go in on a goalie that’s 6 foot 7 and 215 pounds. But if he watched every goal scored on him this year he’d know that this happens almost every single game. Actually most years that he’s played. Not just this one. This has been a constant for four years now.

And it looks like they’re still gonna win anyway with 100% of the goals he allowed being lousy.

Mods need to find the lost posts in this thread!
I can repost last night's if you'd like, it was a short one, so I remember all of it.

Unfortunately, I can't really remember Thursday's, other than it being REALLY LONG! And exhausting!

I don't keep archives of every night's games, I just keep track of the numbers and edit my list in after the night's games.

But since last night was only 4 games and I think I only counted 5 and if I looked at the games, I know I can remember who I gave goals stoppable to, I can actually type up last night's either during the next intermission or right after this game.

And I know the softy of the night was on Brossoit!

I did post last night's around 1:00 AM EST, but it didn't make it with the site construction.
