Softy of the night is this Nicolas Aube-Kubel goal on Braden Holtby

I can't get it to post right now. NHL.com says there's a problem, so I'll post it when it allows me to put it up.

I happened to turn this game on after ours ended and put on the Stars broadcast because the Avs telecast is horrible. And Daryl Reaugh didn't like the goal either and explained that because there was so much room and it didn't go post and in, Holtby really should have had that one.

Grubauer now with my league lead of 37 goals stoppable. Him and Koskinen are the only two to hit 30 (31 for Koskinen) but Nedeljkovic and Hellebuyck are now at 29 as of tonight. Almost 36% of his goals I’ve counted stoppable. That probably isn’t the highest percentage in the league, but it’s definitely the highest number I’ve counted. Driedger had almost an identical percentage coming into this game, but going 0 stoppable for 3 goals against lowers it a little bit.

Which brings me to the Toronto color commentator tonight blasting Grubauer and the team save percentage on the Kraken being dead last and how these types of goals go in when you have the worst save percentage in the league. Even the Seattle color commentator said Grubauer could have had a couple of these when they came out for the 2nd period with Driedger in net. Goal 1 on Grubauer was a stoppable one and goal 2 was just a bad one.

And the Toronto play by play guy also didn’t like the Jake Muzzin goal on Driedger and called it a “Stoppable puck” and said he was over in time to get it. I actually didn’t agree with him there. It was one timed and he made it back into position by the time the puck was going in and he had two guys up against his legs making incidental contact with him (one was his teammate) as the puck went in. If anything I think you can criticize Driedger for not covering it up at the side of the net when he had a chance to seconds before that goal was scored.

But I thought that was interesting and am glad someone is calling the goaltending there. Grubauer has been AIDS this year. Driedger has been bad, but a little less bad.

Softy of the night is this Sam Gagner goal on Kaapo Kahkonen

I changed it after originally giving it to Jack Campbell for the Jared McCann goal, but a guy does jump in front of him on that one. I still mark it as stoppable, but I don’t think it deserves a softy of the night because of the Kraken player jumping in front of him.

This goal was pretty bad on Kahkonen, because he just whiffs and misses the first with his glove and it goes off the post and behind him for an easy tap in.

Softy of the night is this Pierre-Eduoard Bellemare goal on Jon Gillies

The Perry shot on this isn’t even a great shot. This is just horrifyingly bad. Although Merzlikins dodged a couple really good ones last night because of this. Kelly Hrudey was really calling him out for every goal I nailed him on.

Softy of the night is this Barkov goal on Andersen

Thought this was pretty weak on Andersen for the only goal I marked stoppable of the night.

A couple of notes just in case anyone is watching some of these and checking my work and wants an explanation on them, especially a very borderline goal that looked like a bad one and softy of the night candidate

There’s almost no way that the Teravainen goal on Bobrovsky was not deflected by the stick of Weegar when he appears to be trying to block the shot by getting his stick out there only a couple of feet away from Bobrovsky. Darren Pang did not like this goal and said it has no business going in. Now I hadn’t turned that game on by that point and the highlight video ends before Pang can get more into it, so maybe he also conceded that this one was tipped by Weegar’s stick. The highlight video also had the description that it was a Funky bounce off the stick of Bobrovsky.

The way Bobrovsky plays this is that he’s ready for the shot to go 5-hole and he has it shut down. Instead the puck goes past his legs, possibly off his stick and then into the far side of the net. I think Weegar had to have tipped this one, so I had to make a discretionary judgement call on this one that it indeed appeared to be deflected by Weegar.

On the second Scheifele goal on Talbot he presents some body language that he wasn’t happy with himself by getting beaten on that one. I try not to let that sway me. This was a one timer and beats him short side. He had okay positioning on it as he didn’t have to get over much. He certainly had better positioning on this then Hellebuyck did on the Zuccarello goal, which was not one timed but Hellebuyck had further to move to be able to make a save on that shot.

The goal in question on Talbot might have also deflected as well. Jets color commentary seemed to think so when I had that game on in real time.

Softy of the night is this Taylor Hall goal on Sorokin

It’s not often that the video highlight description actually calls it a “Soft goal” but on this one it certainly did. Sorokin is still looking for it after the Bruins starts celebrating.

One of the Laine goals on Soderblom looked worse, but the replay on it wasn’t good enough. It was either between this one and that one or the typical Mike Smith dead angle goal that happens no more than every other game he plays.

I don’t see as many wraparounds going in this year, like I did the last few years. Certainly not many clean ones like this one.

Softy of the night is this Connor Garland goal on John Gibson

I really don’t like giving these sharp angle goals the softy of the night if I can help it, because I see a lot of these around the league. I see more of these than wraparound goals by a whole lot. But I just couldn’t justify giving any of the other 8 goals I counted stoppable the softy of the night over this one.

It's like Martin Jones never left the Sharks!
Haha

But seriously, he's been pretty decent to better than decent up to this point, but he's coming back down to earth now. Pretty obvious that he was overachieving a bit. He still allows some of the most inexplicably soft goals like he always has, but I'm counting a fairly lower percentage on him this year. He's been a bit better than my league average.

The plan was to really not play him this much, but due to Adin Hill just being ABYSMAL to start the year (now he's really been Martin Jones 2.0) and then getting injured, Reimer has really been leaned on a lot heavier than they were hoping. He's had to be their starter this year.
