Goals against review for the December 21st, 2021 game

Lightning vs Golden Knights: 3 goals against Vasilevskiy, 1 stoppable. 4 goals against Brossoit, 1 stoppable.

So that’s 7 goals scored on goalies, 2 are stoppable. That’s 29% of the goals scored were stoppable. Combined save percentages were .883%.

Softy of the night is this Gabriel Fortier goal on Brossoit

Not really a bad goal and the one on Vasilevskiy from Stone looks a little worse, but that one was one timed while Vasilevskiy was still sliding and it just barely gets through his 5-hole. This was a clean and clear sighted wrist shot and Brossoit should be in good enough position, but it just beats him short side.

Softy of the night is this Jonathan Marchessault goal on Garret Sparks

Sparks really needs to go back to wherever he was playing before this (AHL and he wasn’t playing well there) call up or there’s gonna be a lot more of these. I already have him down for 3 goals stoppable and he’s only allowed 3.

He’s famous for these types of ugly goals and it’s why his NHL career didn’t last so long after he won an AHL championship and was supposed to be a fairly long term backup goalie for Toronto. He had quite a few softy of the night’s back in 18-19 and an extremely high count of goal stoppable on my list and he was another guy who I predicted would bottom out by year’s end earlier in that season when he was like a .920% at one point. He’s only played in 3 NHL games since and 2 of them were this year.

Softy of the night is this Nick Cousins goal on Merzlikins

Okay, so I try not to give these goals softy of the night if I don’t have to, because I’ve found these goals happen fairly frequently. And a lot of times they’re even more lucky than they are poor on a goalie. There’s a lot of times where it just luckily goes in with hardly any room between the goalie and post.

Not this one.

Merzlikins actually turns away from this one and that’s what allows it to go in. This is a completely bad goal on the goalie right here, just for how he turned his back and it went in.

Softy of the night is very surprisingly not Jack Hughes have n Mike Smith, but another first overall pick. Lafrieniere on Brian Elliott

He deserved an assist on this play, as it was the nicest assist I think I saw all night. And then he goes and turns the puck over later on and it causes yet another goal. Elliott should have just stayed in covid protocol.

Auntie Rhonda is one of those Merzlikins or Varlamov (although, Varlamov isn't quite as bad for me, just doesn't play as well on my percentages as his save percentage) or Koskinen (bad save percentages, but he looks more like he should be an .870% goalie than a .905% goalie) goalies that gives up A LOT of goals I count stoppable and goals that just look weak and yet somehow year after year, he has a pretty decent to good save percentage. Besides the years he don't play many games because he's injured. Like last year and 18-19.

3 goals on 9 shots this 1st period and at least the last 2 are stoppable. The first one was borderline, but it was from very close range and I don't think it went through him and it was a backhander, so not gonna mark that stoppable cause it was just too close and it didn't go through him. If it was from further out I would have nailed him on that one also.

Pretty satisfied with us not signing him. He gets injured too much and he just gives up A LOT of weak goals.

Softy of the night is this Brendan Lemieux goal on Martin Jones

This was just really bad. It doesn’t look that bad if you’re not paying attention, but he just totally fans on this one with his leg and instead of kicking it with his pad it goes under it. He might have still gotten scored on by the rebound if he had kicked this out and got a leg on it like he should have, but the initial shot should have not gone in that way.

Softy of the night is this Matt Nieto goal on Casey DeSmith

Kind of fluky and unlucky, but pretty bad nonetheless. Definitely a weird one.

Not Blackwood? That was one of the worst goals I've seen in a long time.
He could have easily gotten it, but that one was just a really poorly played one by DeSmith, even though it was unlucky.

Blackwood deserves more blame on his though, just because he created that entire opportunity and he's the only player you can blame on the entire for that one.

I think Blackwood has already been softy of the year 2-3 times this year. That Travis Sanheim goal against Philly a few weeks back was the most recent.

Softy of the night is this Lafreniere goal on Koskinen

That’s Lafreniere’s second softy of the night scoring goal in the last few nights. Think the other one was another giveaway by the goalie and it was Elliott.

Softy of the night is this Brayden Schenn goal on DeSmith

This won’t be a softy of the night many nights, but it just might be if the Canadian teams keep canceling games and cutting the number of games played per night down by 1-2 games per night.
