its not hard to get a bottom pairing RD. There were many avaliable in free agency as I listed.

getting a top 4 is hard but again we have seen some moved already like Marino. Sens can get by with a top 4 LD and playing someone on their offside

Sorry … which UFA RD better than Hamonic wanted to
Come here that we passed on? How many years did they want ?

It has to be someone with a bit of size given our current non contact D we have.

If we manage to acquire a top 4 RD we won't even need Hamonic or any of those other guys.

They'd be the 6th D and wouldn't be worth 2.75-3M salary. Should just play the best of Brannstrom/JBD/Thomson as the 6th D instead.

Hamonic was such an unnecessary acquisition. Last thing we needed was another bottom pairing D making big money.
agree with this completely

The hamonic move in general was very odd especially the messaging around it between the coach and gm one saying he could be a top 4 other saying he is a Josh Brown replacement. Pierre saying he wants his team set before the season end was odd too as the roster is completely changed now. Melnyk passing probably has something to do with that.

I don't think the thought process went much beyond Hamonic played for Capuano and is big and physical.

It's been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Dorion lets his coaches acquire players: Definitive list of players that previously played for Sens coaches (AKA future Ottawa Senators)

Hamonic isn’t a bad option. Paying a third for Hamonic when the Sens did is a bad trade.

At worst, Hamonic for a 3rd (or less) would have been there in the summer.

Now the Sens can’t add a legitimate top 4 defenseman because they’re having trouble moving Zaitsev’s money (even with a sweetener). It would have been less essential to move Zaitsev’s money without acquiring Hamonic.

If that were truly the issue, we could probably just move Hamonic a lot easier than Zaitsev. Might even get a 4th or 5th for him instead of paying to dump Zaitsev.

Oh I laughed at these things 3-5 years ago…. They’ve been recycled over and over here.
LOL - I was positive you liked recycling?
This is a Dorion / Management thread and I recognize why people want to … but it doesn’t have to be a constant negative thread. That can go in the “I’m smarter than Dorion Thread” .
Naaaa...this is exactly what this thread is for and since when did you care if constant negative comments were slathered across all the threads?

Discussion without trolling is the mandate here & there is mix of good and bad including the Champions of GMPD and those who still don't like many of his moves.

He has had a great Summer, absolutely no question and if he can pull off upgrading our RD1 or RD2 it cements this off season as perhaps the best ever in Senators history. Lots to like!

Uhm…. That’s not proof that the coaches acquire players.

That shows that the GM consults employees that he hires when he is looking at brining in players that they have previous relationships with.

In any other job it would be praise worthy management.

Once again, the HFSens hilarity continues…

As for Hamonic, he’s a bottom 4 guy, not a number 6.

He played well to end out the season, was motivated to come here, and was a great insurance policy in case we can’t acquire a legit top 4 guy, or if we want to let the RD kids get some playing time.

He is currently our second best RD and he cost us a 3rd round pick.

It’s always coulda shoulda woulda, but sometimes securing the available option is the best course of action.

He’s on an expiring deal, is not blocking anyone, can play solid RD, is a 700 game vet, and apparently will go through a wall for his teammates. Perfect guy to have on the roster while we patiently look for upgrades internally or externally. He is a legit NHL player.

Hamonic was a good acquisition - look how hard it is to get a RD.
Well there are many RD available through multiple different channels. It’s getting good ones that is difficult

Mendes saying milstein wanted to get zub to ufa ASAP. So there you go

You'd know a thing or two about recycling the same things over and over.

What, everyone else has to laugh according your schedule?

I'm going to bet that a short path to free agency (unless overpayment) was one of the things we offered to persuade Zub to come here to begin with. It filled a cost controlled short term need for us and gave him an opportunity to shine to get a pay day.

I don't think a long term contract was even on the table when he signed the 2 year extension. People might view it as short-sighted, I just don't think it was an option.

It would be praiseworthy if giving the coaches a lot of influence on player acquisition worked out well, but that hasn't really been the case.

Larsson got 4x4 mill. I think the max Zub would get in free agency is close to 5 but probably less in the flat cap era.

He can still be signed even if he wants to test the market. If we get JC then its not as urgent to bring him back

It's bad when the pick you trade ends up being Elias Pettersson though :sarcasm:

In all seriousness the 3rd wasn't a terrible loss but i wonder if the 3M in Hamonic handcuffed us for Marino or Weegar e.g. Weegar wanted a 6M x 5 years extension but we can only afford 4M x 5 years with Hamonic and Zaitsev signed in the short term.

Chabot - Weegar/Marino/Severson
Sanderson - Zub
Holden - Zaitsev
Brannstrom

Looks much more competent than:
Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Hamonic
Holden - Zaitsev
Brannstrom

Makes sense why they would be so hard after JC if they're expecting to lose Zub after or during this year. Maybe they even deal him before the season starts if they land JC. Expecting JBD/Tomson, etc. to fill in is reasonable with Zub or JC in tow, but pretty grim without one of those two ahead of them.

Hold up bruv

I did not listen.

I found this article from June 2022 where Mendes discusses a Zub extension.
When Dan Milstein negotiated this two-year contract extension for his client last summer, he knew that Zub would be able to test unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2023. The strategy seemed simple: Take a two-year deal with a relatively team-friendly $2.5 million cap hit and then re-visit the situation down the road.

Zub has certainly outperformed that contract and will carry a significant amount of leverage in the months ahead. Perhaps Zub and Milstein would like to wait a few months to see how things play out in Ottawa. If the team doesn’t enhance the roster this offseason — or gets off to another slow start next fall — perhaps Zub will decide that he wants to head to a playoff contender.
That's as close as he got to what the tweet says. I am listening now. I will add on here if I get anything out of the interview.
From the interview
I think it was Milstein's plan to take him to free agency... He can pick his spot.
Ian says it's his guess.

It is interesting they shuffled Brown off asap at indicating he would want to test free agency and there seems to be very little movement re contract talks with Zub from what I understand. Maybe the cards have been on the table for a while on this. Have to wait and see. I really hope he gets signed.
