I like Zub but paying him more than $4M - 4.5M AAV would be an over-pay.

We may have a Zub replacement in JBD in a year or two. I think Lassi Thomson could become a top 4 D too. I see both as potential 2nd pair D in the future. I hope they turn out to be that good.

Neither are as big or as hard to play against. You need physical d men. The sens don't have any. He's the only one. Look at Tampa look who Colorado went out and got.

This probably is the likely outcome, not the alternative.

Zub has shown flashes of being a $5 million dman but he’s also showed flashes worth something less.

He signed a really low contract to get to UFA as fast as possible. I think the writing is on the wall.

As a side note … Francis seems to think Zub would be open to an extension.

Ugh - I’d have a lot of concern for Zub at $5 x5. I could see his play stagnating over time something like Z’s. It may not end up as bad but I don’t see him getting better and think it could get worse.

It also locks $5 million into our 3RD best D or possibly 4th beat D. If we acquire someone like JC. Your 4th D can’t make $5 million.

The average cost/player off $80 million payroll is around $3.5 million … someone needs to balance out the guys making $8-10…

What did he say

He initiates tons of contact. Being physical isnt just big hits, he uses his body very well sperating the man from the puck, protecting pucks and pinning players. Zub is a much better fit for this team in terms of need, position and style of play than Chychrun.

If his play stagnates he’s still worth that money. He can play on our top pair and play well with our number 1 d man. Now if we get chychrun there’s a choice to be made as there is a cap of course like you said

If we manage to acquire a top 4 RD we won't even need Hamonic or any of those other guys.

They'd be the 6th D and wouldn't be worth 2.75-3M salary. Should just play the best of Brannstrom/JBD/Thomson as the 6th D instead.

Hamonic was such an unnecessary acquisition. Last thing we needed was another bottom pairing D making big money.

Even if we get JC we don’t have a single big body dman on the roster. Hamonic was a necessary acquisition for this front office. the cost we paid will probably be made up in any future negations Dorion has for another D … simply because he is that much less desperate for a dman and he can’t wait out Phoenix or whoever.

Your view on acquiring Hamonic confuses me. As if simply acquiring any RD is a heroic feat on its own. Even if potentially not very good

Last spring I saw something that had Hamonic as the 10-12th best available solution. Do a UFA search for right D and you’ll see how thin the options are. Than factor in player discretion and term.

Getting Hamonic secured a decent option as a big body / right D. There is still room to add more but if we don’t we can start the season. Getting ahead of this was a nice move by Dorion and the FO.

Hamonic expires and we’re not committed to 3-5 years. Lots of better D options but they all didn’t want to come here.
