You're absolutely right. It's not. But this year maybe?

Lucas Edmonds is considered by many a first round talent in the upcoming draft. And by some weird rule, he is eligible for the draft as a 21 year old. Merkulov compares to him IMO. Age and all. So for this year at the least, he compares to a first round talent.

He compares to Lucas Edmonds? NHL Central Scouting has Edmonds ranked 107. Out of North American skaters. TSN has him 63. Serious question: who are these "many" who consider him a first rounder?

Regardless, again, we can be happy with this signing. We can be excited by his potential. But why do we need to do this thing where we exaggerate every Bruins prospect or move as some sort of unquestionable grand slam?

Mid term rankings from January. Things have changed.

I will say what I always say Mike. If I'm allowed of course.

I don't do player comps. This is why. Because every player is their own player.

I just wanted to jump on the bandwagon

This is all sunshine and kittens around here till' we find out that Merkulov is Koko's cousin...
Sunshine and kittens on HF ?
Not to get off subject but seeing your list fired me up Dino Ciccarelli over 600 goals and had to wait for Hall call forever while guys like Guy Carbonneau go in quick 🙄 Just mind boggling.Ricky Middleton should be in for sure.End Rant 😄
Middleton isn’t in because of name on lawsuit against league

Tim Kerr wasn’t drafted - phenomenal player

First round picks run 50% play 246 or more games (3 full seasons) however last 1/3 of round around 30%

What was his draft status? Nobody even took a flier on him his eligible years You can’t take his age out of it. He’s 21. Three years older than the first rounders we will see in June. I find it strange to label an undrafted 21 year old freshman in college a first round talent. Would anyone not trade him right now for a 2022 1? but I digress. Pulling for him and hoping he becomes a top 6 at some point in time
He may not of been back in 2018, but that's why the draft is such a crap shoot when your selecting 17-18 year-olds, you just never know how one will turn out.

its still early one game at the AHL level and everyone has him as a future star. Now if you go off that one game it sure looks as if he could be, but teams will start to give him a whole lot more attention from here on out. The more they see him, they'll make adjustments and that's when we'll truly see if he's all that or not. I say lets give him 20 games and see if he still shines as he did in game one and if so then U can say the Bruins stole a first round talent in a year they didn't have a first round pick.

I don't care if he's 21 or 18 at that point, because like I said earlier you really aren't sure how your 18 year-old first round draft pick is going to turn out any ways especially given where the Bruins usually are picking, no ones a guarantee to make the NHL.

Fun fact, Tim Kerr and Jay Wells were in my accounting class when I went to college in Kingston. Kerr was a big thick guy who would plant himself in front of the net and get a ton of those so-called garbage goals, probably wasn't drafted because he wasn't a great skater and didn't really put up big numbers in junior in a high scoring era.

When was the latest one there? What are more recent examples?

I agree with them not actually trading him, just find it hard to believe if he was signed by Colorado say, they would trade a Bruins first for him

do your own homework.
Google is your friend. Obviously many are still playing right now.

If this were true, why aren’t teams dealing their firsts for guys that have been in college for three years?

I love the Bruins are targeting these highly skilled types, but I think some of the things written or said may give unrealistic expectations.

Here’s the thing though…

Some teams would trade their first for some of these guys.

Its all situational.

Good overall highlights of Merkulov from yesterdays game. (Not todays 1-0 win). Looks like he was thrown into the fire to bring up the puck (like Pasta) on the PP. Looks calm. Nice dangle in one of the highlight play

I suppose one reason would be that the draft pick, barring prior selection, is guaranteed to the selecting team, whereas there could be competition for the player not previously picked in a prior draft. Ben Meyer is a good example.

Another is a question as to whom you’d trade the draft pick. Players such as Merkulov and Meyer, among others, have no commitment to any NHL team. Teams do trade for the rights to three year college players who have been drafted but not yet signed.

Based on the the short highlights he seems to have the best hands I've seen from a Bruins prospect since Pastrnak. This is a welcome change of pace, since they haven't really had a prospect during the Sweeney regime with truly exceptional stickhandling ability.

It's reminds me of when some people talk about how great a player did in a game by telling you about two stick checks, and a time they made a smart play. I would call that doing the bare minimum of their job.

I hope he ends up being a good player, but if being realistic, how many great undrafted college forwards have there been in the last 10-15 years? Chris Kunitz might be the best undrafted college fa forward in 20 years.

I would argue the chances of getting something good from a college FA is FAR FAR FAR lower than a first round pick. They are more like second to fourth round picks.

Lots of sizzle but ends up with a bad turnover when he had 14 unmarked heading to the net or his dman entering the zone with his head up.

Instead he calls his own number and shoots it into his checkers shins.

Not to mention the first turnover when he doesn't get the puck deep enough on the dump attempt.

I'm glad he does the thing most NHLers do which is feel guilty after a turnover and goes after the puck carrier hard but towards the end of that sequence he sort of goes for a skate. Definitely seemed like he needed a map.

Just one shift but that's what I see.
