Heck even McLaughlin should probably get full time in Providence for a year.

Him and Merkulov should develop for a year. Call them up in season if necessary due to injuries.

Studnicka and Steen will rotate 13th forward duties.
If their NHL ready, why play them in Providence ?

I mean its a ways off but the only way I send them to providence is if their not ready for the NHL. McLaughlin sure looks the part right now and its hard for me to believe that during his negotiation's Sweeney didn't state to them that the bruins roster is a huge possibility moving forward.

McLaughlin has showed me more than Studnicka has already, so there's no way Im giving Stud a lock for the NHL. He needs to prove he belongs by beating out the competition.

I think Sweeney plan was to give Merkulov the 8 game stint and the playoffs this year in providence and see how he looks, maybe he will think he needs another 15 or so games next year at providence. Time will only tell, but if he wins a spot in camp he should be there.

Ya I think it wouldn't hurt McLaughlin to get a year in Providence either. While I'm not as giddy about him as others, I think he's played well enough though to be someone you could fill that 4RW spot with should Lazar leave in FA.

Going tonight will have the definitive breakdown of skillset

Not sure if more excited about Merkulov or getting fried dough cooked infront or me (better still have it or it’s not going to be pretty)

Studnicka "won" a spot at camp this year with a strong pre-season.....he was still sent to the AHL because of the numbers game and him being waiver exempt.

Two totally different situations. Sweeney signed FA and brought them in, to fill the spots. Studnicka didn't have a chance from the get-go but something tells me Sweeney didn't have much faith in him from the on-set and I have to say he was right.

This Off season hopefully Donny uses some of the ELC, they can be a GMs best friends.

How are they different situations?

Studnicka was sent down because he was waiver exempt despite playing well because there wasn't a spot for him.

If you look at next season Merkulov is going to be in the same exact situation. No real spot for him in the line-up with guys already signed and he's waiver exempt.

Look I hope I'm wrong and the kid puts on a show at camp and earns a spot. But I remember not long ago a 1st round rookie named David Pastrnak wowing folks at camp and even he started the year in the AHL.

IMO its because Debrusk will more than likely be gone, and unless Foligno reincarnates in the playoffs and Nosek steps it up these guys aren't keeping no-one down in the minors waiver exempt or not. Add in Lazar has probably played himself out of Boston as well.

Sweeney proven in the past he'll shed dead weight from his bad signings and I can see that very same thing once again, opening up the door for a Merkulov to make the team out of camp. Last year he signed all those FA to NHL contracts, so basically there was no way, Studnicka was going to be on the Bruins at the break of camp unless it was because of injury.

So you're penciling Merkulov into the 1RW spot?

No didn't say that all.

But I do think he sure and the hell has enough talent to make the Bruins team at the start of next year, for the reasons I stated above and then its all depends on how the cookie crumbles on what happens next.

Guess time will tell. Personally don't see them moving DeBrusk unless they are upgrading that 1RW spot. Can't see them splitting up the Hall-Haula-Pastrnak line or the Frederic-Coyle-Smith line. I don't see Boston play Merkulov in a 4th line role for 10 minutes a night when he can play 18+ a night in Providence.

Time will tell. I can see them dealing Debrusk for picks/prospects, but I honestly think a whole lot of it depends on the current success in this years playoffs.

Not sure you're sending the right message if you're trying to re-sign a guy like Bergeron and you're trading a current player whose capable of 20+ goals for futures.

If this kid is as good as some think that probably means Studnicka gets dealt.

Well I would suggest if Studnicka gets dealt it is because of his play, not someone else's

Maybe after 15-20 AHL games I will start thinking of Merkulov as a potential challenger for the bruins roster next year, but despite a very nice start to his AHL career on Saturday, I am not looking for him in Boston next year at this point

Agree a full year in the AHL for Merkulov, Beecher and Lysell will only help them.

Yeah most likely. With playoffs pending, Providence could still play 20-30 more games this year, and obviously people could actually start to really establish themselves, but even so it is unlikely I look at any of them as options to start the year. That doesn't mean they are not candidates to end the year

His hands and small area movements look really good - his hands and brain were a little out of sync as he lost puck couple of times but the skill is up there

He didn’t show a top end gear but he moves around and finds areas and the puck finds him and processes well when he gets it

He did show an upper burst in overtime or late I didn’t see early but he is by know means slow

He’s on the smaller side but never got touched - yet he often had the puck

I like to see him after a half season of pro life and training

You just can’t teach what he’s got

I would assume the lack of size elite speed probably why he was not on a lot of radar but he is good at hockey just how good remains to be seen

A buddy of mine says he really likes his low effort shot. Somewhere between Kucherov / Pettersson esque. Nowhere near as powerful but sneaky and quick.
