People love to draw a line in the sand and pick a side. The whole DeAngelo/Georgiev saga is a great example of this. It doesn't have to be one or the other as its been framed. Both Tony and Georgiev are at fault. Tony got too much bad PR by putting his name out there all the time spreading his anti-vax nonsense among other things, and Georgiev is apparently a pain in the ass teammate that has performed exceptionally poorly when relegated to seeing the ice every 5th-6th game.
Before Igor arrived he put up some decent numbers. .914 in 18-19 and .910 in 19-20. These were David Quinn's first 2 seasons and we were knee deep in a rebuild. Ask some Toronto fans what they remember of Georgiev. I'd imagine he feels defeated and doesn't care to put the work in since he's been riding the bench most of the past 2 years. Of course not a very mature of him nor a good sign, but he's still got a decent shot of being a starter if he gets an opportunity.
Tony is a prime example of poor asset management that helped cost Gorton his job. He was a throw in from the 2017 Stepan & Raanta trade that kicked off the rebuild. He bounced between Hartford and here his first season here, seemingly with some maturing still to do. over 3 years they develop him into a damn good Top4 PMD, sure he has flaws but when they acquired him teams thought he was a lost cause. After he puts up 53 points in 19-20 his name is whispered every time a rangers rumor but the word was the Gorton wanted too much for him (much like Georgiev and some others dealt during the rebuild) I think the league definitely picked up on Gorton's tendencies and was able to tell when they had no intention of keeping a player long term (DeAngelo, Strome, Buchnevich, Georgiev etc) so they wouldn't go near the asking price. They started 20-21 with tony still on the roster, but 6 games into the season all this nonsense broke out and tony was told to stay home. The story goes that after some strange rumors surrounding Tony and K'Andre Miller's first goal puck, Gorton warned Tony that if his name pops up in the press for a bad reason one more time then he'd be done with the team, and so he felt his hand was forced and Tony was sent home. The biggest problem is if Gorton knew for a while that Tony was headache and a PR nightmare, and he knew he didn't have the cap to keep him around anyways, he should have been dealt way before any of this nonsense came to a head.
