I don't see what's so wrong with fans using something like that to enhance the experience in the arena. If it helped get people excited for the game and loud when they were in the arena, why the hate? Just let the people who pay their money enjoy the game how they please. No one is making you participate.

I just don't think a true fan of a hockey team should need a gimmick to help get them excited, especially when it's a pretty bad ripoff of a Seattle Seahawks thing.

It's true no one is making me participate and people can do what they want, but it is cringe-inducing when it gets media coverage or the Blue Jackets website covers it as it gives the impression all fans are into it.

You just don't see the classic fanbases, like the Hawks/Rangers/Pens/Habs obsessing over getting a slogan trending, they just come out and support the hockey.

There's nothing wrong with it. Some people are just so unhappy that they complain about anything they can. Every team has a rally cry of some kind, even original six teams. Non issue.

I have no idea what the 5th line was or how it started. But holy over-reaction bat-man. I saw a couple of signs and thought it was both silly and amusing. Not sure it's anymore or less silly than any other sign.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "slogan trending". Trending sounds like twitter. I'm sure there are social media tags for most markets outside of the main one (like #CBJ).

As far as "gimmicks", sometimes you do things to get people to your cause. For example that group that the captain helped form to fire Howson/Priest or whatever. The people are generally there and they just rally to something.

We don't need unity avatars to be fans or get excited about our team; yet we try and do them all the time. Some people find them fun.

On the surface I'm trying to figure out what has people riled up about the 5th line. It doesn't seem like anything to get worked up about one way or another. I mean, hell, I don't even understand why people stand in line for autographs. I get it for the kids or maybe some chick with a huge crush. I won't participate but I don't see why anyone would care.

This #Lumbus or whatever is annoying. I hope there is actual good back-story and we're making fun of ourselves or something. If it's the national stage doing it it seems more like the British creating songs for the common folks to sing to make fun of themselves (Yankee Doodle Dandy) without realizing it. I saw that #Lumbus (or whatever it is) in another thread on here, but I haven't been paying attention.

Back to the autograph thing for a moment. I was a few feet from Shelley during pre-game and turning time where he wasn't on camera he was taking pictures for folks. Just to amuse myself; I so want a pic with him and me in the Rocky/Creed fight pose after the ding/ding. I would so look at that once in a while and laugh.

I like it, Seattle used the "12th man", basketball uses the 6th man. I'm fine with it, if it gets people excited and wanting to actually sell out the home finale then i'm all for it.

The "5th line" much like "#Lumbus" is just a sad and annoying reminder that so many people in this town need a lame gimmick to hop on and the national media won't pay attention to the CBJ unless there is a lame social media joke to make fun of.

Hopefully when we are in the playoffs this 5th line nonsense has died away and gone down and we can focus on the actual hockey.

I don't think I've ever even come close to agreeing with anything you have ever posted.

.

No. The Florida Panthers' '7th Man' is a bad ripoff of a Seattle Seahawks thing (which is actually a ripoff from Texas A&M who probably lifted it from somebody else)

I usually hate stuff like #WeArethe5thLine and I found myself compelled to make fun of it on twitter, but I can't. I'm on board with it. I love when organic fan things take root like twitter people meeting at the cannon (not my thing but it's cool), "LEO!", the new "C-B-J!" chant, and now this. Every team has different traditions. Early on the team tried to manufacture some traditions and they didn't really take. Now we're starting to carve out our own and those are what will last.

We're not a classic fanbase. We're an expansion team that started in 2000. Let's be who we are and embrace that instead of trying to be like other fans.

We just won a huge game. Why do we have to find things to be unhappy about?

"Potvin sucks!" and an octopus come to mind.

Enough with the "true fan" nonsense. Anything that unites a group for a common cause is fine. It's not plastic rats but it'll do.

Being a fan of hockey is supposed to be fun, right?

Yes, of course it is supposed to be fun. And on nights like last night, it is.

I personally prefer "4th pairing" or "3rd goalie" but that's just me.

stay off my twitter account! hahahaha

i like the 5th line thing, i just don't care for the individuals getting credit for it...everything i've seen from them is trying to put the focus on them, not the team or their causes...

Great picture STBC..

Fox showed the CBJ coaching staff hugging and high fiving too.. I can't recall excitement at quite the same level as I saw last night.. It was a big win vs a team that's fighting for their playoff life.

Yeah, that's a good way to put it. I just wish the focus was more on the team and the hockey.

Also, don't like the media thing of "oh hey look - fans in columbus now care about their hockey team because they created a hashtag!"

Some of us, a lot of us, have cared since the beginning and it shouldn't be portrayed that Columbus fans are now just starting to root for the team.

Photo of the year for sure. You can see on the replay how happy Joey and Jenner are when they start jumping, and I'm so glad a photographer caught it.
