Possession that was not permitted by the rules of the game that the linesman missed. That's why replay exists, to correct what was missed.

Just like inbounds vs out of bounds in the NFL.

In bounds vs out of bounds makes more sense in football because you’re challenging whether a catch was legal. The direct result of the catch is determined by whether a player was inbounds or out of bounds.

A goal is not scored because a player was 200 ms early on his entry. It just feels like something that should be in the hands of the linesman. To each their own though, it’s just an opinion and I don’t think it’s ever going away.

Offsides determines if zone entry was legal. It's the exact same thing.

You're literally making my argument.

Offside makes sense because you're challenging whether possession was legal.

Boldy!

No. He is arguing that something like a holding call in NFL football, or a false start, or a defensive offside, is equivalent. Those things are NOT the play, but they affect the play which comes later.

In the same way that those penalties are not reviewable, there is a decent argument to be made about offside in hockey as well.

It affects the play. It is NOT the play that scores the goal.
