G Zach Fucale (2013, 36th, MTL)

Well Montréal is well known for developping goaltenders.

Fucale is going to be a great one.

Some would say we messed up with Price who was supposed to be a "great one" even more so.

Fucale has a lot of talent, but goalies are very difficult to project.

Price is a top 5 G. Those who say the Habs messed up with him are either trolls or 12yo.

Great pick indeed, but hard to call him a steal already. Goalies take a long time to develop, it would be easier to determine whether or not he was a steal in 3-4 years I'd imagine. Nonetheless, as a habs fan I am pleased with this pick.

Agreed. The term 'steal' usually takes years to come to fruition.

He's a fantastic pick at this spot though, none the less. Getting a guy Button was convinces would be an early pick is great. Some don't like his opinions, I do, however.

IMO, Fucale won't have as much pressure as Price to succeed. He won't have to deal with the pressure of being a 1st round pick, let alone 5th overall. His calmness, work ethic, character and techniques are off the charts and will make him an elite goaltender in 7-8 years. I dare to say that Zachary Fucale will be the Canadiens franchise goaltender in 7-8 years and will be amongst the elite. He might not be the most athletic, but has all the tools to succeed.

It's bold to say such thing, but yes, he will have all the time he needs to develop. 2 more years in Halifax and team Canada at the WJC and 2 more years in the AHL with the Bulldogs. 4 years in the big league to make a safe and easy transition behind Price.

That's what everyone said about Price, why give up on him so easily. CP's 7-8 years aren't up as far as I'm concerned...Fucale will be a great backup until the organization will officially consider Price a failure and trade him off or not re-sign him.

Fucale's lack of size worry me a bit, you rarely see a top goaltender that small both in height and weight. Hopefully he gets a late growth spurt.

Very very good quality pick for where he went.

Goalies are boom or bust prospects. But a typical 2nd rounder has a very low chance of becoming a franchise player, whereas with Fucale youre probably looking at a 30%+ chance or something like that, pretty good odds considering where drafted.

If he doesnt become a starter, he's kinda useless, whereas a forward or D could still become a checking forward, bottom pairing PP specialist, etc. but if he does become a legitimate starter, and the odds are relatively good, than its a huge steal.

But he does look like he's got the physical strenght of Pierre Gauthier. Someone should feed him asap.

Goalie training is also different from player training so don't look much in to his physical strength. He also hasn't had a chance to physically mature much either.

Goalies are, on average, much lankier than skaters. Ex. Ryan Miller.

I know, I just wanted to point out that he looks like Pierre Gauthier.

Hockeydb doesn't keep height and weight up to date normally. So they'll put in the measurements for a player when they first create his profile and sometimes they won't update at all after that.

Great pick by montreal,Calgary really missed the boat here

Yeah they could have had the next Leland Irving...

Not saying Fucale will be, but Irving had sensational numbers the year he was drafted. He still has the athleticism - he just never developed the head to go with it. With goalies you just never know.

I wouldn't touch a goalie in the 1st round. And I think Calgary is more than happy with Jon Gillies.

Here's a list of the Flames 1st round goalies:

Trevor Kidd, 11th overall
Brent Krahn, 9th overall
Leland Irving, 26th overall

Not one was considered a "reach" when they were taken, but all have obviously been poor value picks.

If you are unawares of Calgary's goaltending situation, there's really little point to making that comment. Calgary is not lacking in goaltending depth or prospects, but thanks for playing.

And it is the perfect timeline for Fucale too. He will come into the NHL when Price is 30. Then a few years as backup UNLESS Fucale pushes him out. For Montreal, you can't argue with getting the #1 rated goalie in a draft with a 2nd round pick.

He said 7-8 years from now, by then Price will be in his mid-30's. It's a not a crazy prediction.

Saying Price will be replaced in 7-8 years is basically saying he'll be a flop imo. He was brought in to be the franchise goalie, if he gets replaced by the time he's 33 I don't think he'll have done a good job with the habs

It's hard to predict so far down the road. Sure, there are always guys like Brodeur who stay elite well into their late 30's, but there's also a Marty Turco, who suddenly fell off a cliff at age 33 after being a high end goalie for years. For J-S Giguere, it was age 31, at that point he was suddenly no longer able to be a quality #1 goalie. BTW, I'm not a Price hater at all, but it's not crazy to envision this scenario 7-8 years from now.

He has to prove that he can maintain good stats next year with a weaker Halifax team. This year, I thought he was a product of the talent around him. He seems to let in weak goals often and if he can cut down on those, I fully believe he can be the starter of the future should Price go south.
