Knowing Murray's luck he probably ruptured his Achilles tendon when he was stretching
So if he "heals up" at any point in the season they need to immediately clear space for his salary and of course no buyout option then. Obviously seems shady if he was ready in the playoffs but he might have actually injured himself training :sarcasm:

I feel confident the MD or DO that did the assessment is not jeopardizing his/her license for Matt Murray or the Leafs
Very unlikely to jeopardize license with abundance of caution.....if they cleared them when they shouldn't would be more of a scenario...

How much is the bad situation worth? 3rd + 7th? Do you take him on for a few 1sts?

There is always a price.

It's funny seeing people get upset for one of Dubas' worst moves being turned into a good one.

Turns out the risk was very small for Murray.
No the always injured Murray is useless when he is always injured and unreliable to the team.

Bringing on a player NOT to play can't be spun as a good thing. He should be left as a headache for another team to deal with.

Small market teams that barely spend above the cap floor take on LTIR contracts to help them met the minimum amount of spending using that to reach the floor limit. Arizona one of the weakest teams in the NHL playing in a 5 thousand seat area [Mullett Arena has an official capacity of 5,025 fans] have over $22 mil in LTIR contracts on this years cap already. Even Arizona wouldn't touch the Murray contract because it comes with a poison pill of $8 mil total (Leafs $6 mil obligation) salary attached, which defeats the entire purpose of cutting down spending on Salaries for cost reasons when you only get Cap credit for $4.687 mil.

LTIR contract for teams that think their Cup competitive don't get accrue cap space during the season for the Trade Deadline additions, when they begin the year using LTIR to be cap compliant for day 1.

Even with Murray starting the year on LTIR and most knowledgeable fans that didn't want Murray in the first place for exactly this reason of being no help the current team in helping it win, still see have the Leafs current roster +$2 mill over the limit even with every penny of the Murray contract taken into account.

Really hope Murray fully recovers so he can play elsewhere next year, but this is fantastic for the Leafs.

As it turns out, the Leafs couldn't have bought out Matt Murray even if they wanted to

The long awaited buyout that was supposed to be used on goaltender, Matt Murray, was never used and it's starting to make a lot more sense as to why the Toronto Maple Leafs never pulled off what seemed to be the most obvious move for a cap-strapped team.

Earlier today, the Maple Leafs announced that they had placed Murray on the long-term injured reserve indefinitely to start the regular season. His salary can now be stashed aside on the LTIR alongside Jake Muzzin, which drops their projected cap space from being over $12.4 million to just a shade over $2 million with a 22-man roster.

CapFriendly tweeted out shortly afterwards that because Murray was indeed injured and would be placed on the LTIR, the Leafs were never in a place where they could have used a buyout as the rules of the CBA stipulate that you can't utilize a buyout on an injured player.

The news was quite shocking because there were never any rumours or reports indicating that the goaltender was injured once again. This is quite the shocking announcement, as Murray was healthy and ready to play when the Leafs played Florida in the 2nd round of the playoffs in May. There had been no reports indicating that Murray had suffered any type of an injury during practice throughout that series, nor was an announcement made that he had suffered any sort of an off ice injury at some point this summer.

I wonder if the leafs get cap relief if Nick Robertson is still injured

Video surfaces of injured Leafs winger working on his boxing over the summer to help with his recovery

On December 8th of last season, Nicholas Robertson was hit awkwardly into the boards by defenseman Matt Roy in a game against the LA Kings. At the time, the Leafs and Robertson elected to rehab the shoulder injury he suffered from the hit and he was initially expected to miss 6 weeks. Following 6 weeks of rehab however, his recovery was not making the progress he and the Leafs had hoped for and surgery was required.

Following surgery and months of rehab, Robertson returned to the ice a few weeks ago and is now back in the gym in preparation for training camp which begins in just under two months. Yesterday, his trainers in Michigan shared a video of Robertson in the gym doing some training. It is not the typical training video that everyone is used to seeing though. Instead, it is a video of Robertson working on his hands the way new Leaf Ryan Reaves likely does. Robertson was seen boxing with one of his trainers showing no signs that his injury is hampering him.

Is he gone for the whole year?

By the sounds of the reports Murray apparently developed a magical 72 hour post concussion syndrome headache lasting from the full length of the 2nd buyout window. preventing a Leafs buyout that would have resulted in costing Murray >$2.5 mil in salary with a 2/3rds buyout rate of his $8 mil salary. Now he will earn the full amount for next year.

However Murray should be fine next week after the buyout window closes :wg: and show up for Leafs camp with a Docs note he is ready to play.

LTIR minimum limits are for 10 games / 26 days so even if Leafs successfully place Murray on LTIR to start the year to be cap compliant for opening day, there is nothing preventing Murray from declaring himself healthy and ready to return off IR once those milestones pass, if he says he feels fine and has medical documents proving his health. The NHL will be watching this fiasco closely and come November Leafs could be faced with cutting nearly $5 mil from their NHL roster to make room for fitting Murray back in under the Salary Cap ceiling or finding a taker for Murray in trade.

This is more likely about kicking the can down the road a little when Leaf could once again face the situation of what to do with Murray and his contract. If Leafs management believed that Murray was eligible for season long LTIR all along they wouldn't have needed Sammy to file for Arbitration to create a 2nd buyout window and be preparing today to be placing Murray on NHL waivers for a buyout costing them future cap space penalties. Leafs were blocked by Murray from buying him out per CBA rules.

Even the Leafs didn't know Murray was injured, so this came as surprise to everyone that a buyout was being blocked, as well as trying to trade an injured player would have been voided trade and Leafs would have placed Murray on LTIR at the start of the off-season just like Muzzin and then Treliving would have known for months where the Leafs stood and told everyone long ago the plan for Murray was LTIR for 2023-24 season.

LTIR for the full season has to be where both sides agree to not pushing the issue and sitting on IR and cashing his $8 mil paycheque. However if Murray wants to play and not sit then Leafs can't prevent him from declaring himself healthy if he can pass his physical and demand returning to the active roster, as the NHLPA would then file a grievance with NHL for Leafs blocking his return.

I’m sure the Leafs medical team is far too concerned about the long term effects of concussion syndrome to entertain Matt returning. It would be irresponsible.

I think most would have preferred a healthy starting goalie for the playoffs.

It was very unfair to have Joseph Woll thrust in that position.
Woll did a great job, which is why he's penciled in as the backup next year, and potentially a starter down the road if his development continues. No issues with the goaltending last year, even with Murray being injured. Unfortunate. Oh well, book closed.
