Murray made $7 mil last year in real money and is owed $8 mil this year on that butt ugly contract.

He played in 26 games last year recording 14 wins and now going on LTIR ..

So for $15 mil dollars at 14 wins = > $1 mil per win cost to ownership.

Since Murray can't play and you still owe him the full $8 mil and you have to pay another goalie to play in his place Woll & that means the team is doubling down on cost for their backup goalie position of both Murray and Woll and essentially paying $9 mil combined for the position in real cost.

If a small marker owner saw their GM spending $9 mil of their money on a backup goalie position they wouldn't think its genius, they would walk their GM to the front door and toss him out saying you're fired.

Fortunately for Leaf Nation fans that snake oil salesman Dubas got himself fired and we don't have to deal wtih this nonsense, and he can no longer Troll this fanbase any longer. :)
The only upside to this is that the money the Leafs pay to Murray or even Babcock for that matter, reduces what the Leafs have to contribute to the league for propping up other franchises.

Yes, the league can investigate if they choose to via a mutually agreed upon between league and PA neutral doctor to review the club doctors findings. But nothing to stress, this isn't happening without plausible cause. He'll be special assistant to goalie coach in charge of community relations by next year lol..
Well really when you think about it someone needed to fill the vacancy that was created when Spezza decided to follow his dream.

He was good in the 1st cup win I'll give him that. But Fleury had no business being pulled on the 2nd run. They only did it because they had already decided he'd be headed to Vegas
Well in the end he helped them win two
Like Phil the thrill did recently for them 😁

5 years at 4m same as Korpisalo deal. I'd be okay with that.
A 1 year deal with Korpisalo would have been just north of 2mm and he is 100% UFA unlike Sammy...just to put it in perspective.
You arent getting Sammy down there.

Buyout-itis, suspected case of caproblemitis too.
LOL

Cap-problem-itis is a long term issue.

Leafs are not out of the woods yet now that Murray appears to have blocked his buyout successfully,

LTIR is only for 10 games or 26 games min limit as per CBA. So Leafs tossing him on LTIR to start year doesn't mean he can remain on there.. Don't be surprised if magically Murray claims himself healthy after his 10 games/26 games has passed and has an independent medical report supports he has been cleared. Claiming you have a headache from concussion related symtoms to block a 48 hour buyout window this week to prevent a buyout is one thing, but then headache could be gone next week as Murray claims he is feeling great by training camp,

Then what do the Leafs do when they have to account for the balance of his salary/cap hit during the season when he comes off LTIR and they spend to the cap ceiling with no cap space to absorb it?.

Remember for season long LTIR to work both sides have to be in full agreement, and neither side trying to push the health issue or the return. The fact that Murray took Leafs off of all his Social media accounts sounds like a bitter divorce not a happy settlement and agreement.

technically, it doesnt matter I dont think ...the Leafs dont actually have to re-activate him do they?

i.e. if they wanted to re-activate him, and had no cap space, they would be forced to wait until they made space, but, this is the reverse.

Murray at the doctors

Murray: "will I be able to play hockey again?"
Doctor: "maybe with Pittsburgh"
Murray: "does my penis still work?"
Doctor: "No, your penis does not work"
Murray: "kill meeeeeeeeeeeee"

Our long, national nightmare is over!
Who cares what he did after, this is about the positive assets, it was a genius move.
Genius? Careful, you might hurt yourself.

His injury is called common sense: better to get paid 100% while on LTIR rather than 2/3 after a buyout.

Pretty much all terrible signings.

"Pretty much all terrible signings"?

What are you smoking?

-Niederrieiter is the type of player the Leafs need. He hits and scores. 24 goals and 165 hits. He also netted the Preds a 2nd round pick.
-Strome had 65 points last year
-Domi had 56 points
-Vatrano had 41 with 86 hits
-Athanasiou had 40 points
-Paul had 32 points with 111 hits
-Marchment had 31 points in 68 games with 88 hits

You also forgot David Perron who got $4.7M, pretty much Murray's cap hit and he put up 56 points.

If you think these signings are "terrible" then having Kerfoot's 32 points must be one of the worst contracts in the league last year.

-Schultz played 18 minutes a night, Rielly is the only D to have more points than him (34) with a higher point share than all Leafs D except for Rielly and Lilljgren
-Zadorov played 19 minutes a night, had more hits than any leaf, had a higher point share than Brodie and had more points than Sandin, Liljegren, Holl, and Brodie.
-Leddy played 21 minutes a night, had a higher point share than any leaf defender not named Giordano and as a defensive defensemen had more points than Sandin, Liljegren, Holl, and Brodie.
-Cole played 19 minutes a night for Tampa and had more points than Holl and Brodie and a higher point share than Sandin and Brodie

All these guys were arguably better than Holl, Giordano or maybe even Brodie.

Fleury cost $1.3M less than Murray, actually played and had better numbers;
Fleury: .908 S%, 2.85 GAA, 8.2 PS in 46 games
Murray: 903 S%, 3.01 GAA, 4.2 PS in 24 games

So yes literally all these contracts except for Manson and Gudbransson would have been money better spent than close to $5M on Murray.

And nothing says because you dont acquire Murray, that you have to only sign a $4.5M+ player to replace him. You could get 2 players for that cost or make a trade to get a better player.

Some of these signings were so "terrible", you wanted them last season;

I think for now you'll see:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - ROR - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Kerfoot - Acciari - Lafferty

Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Liljegren
Gio - Holl

Hopefully, we can send out Kerfoot + Engvall for some picks and flip them for Bertuzzi/Domi, to get some more depth scoring.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Domi - ROR - Jarnkrok
Lafferty - Kampf - Acciari
Do we take a shot at Oskar Lindblom on a 1 year deal? He's put together some good seasons but not much recently for obvious reasons.

Also, not sure why, but I feel like Strome may be a good candidate for Tavares LW.

So, they saved $2 million in cap space for the 2024-25 season, which neatly covers Matthew's raise, and in the following season Tavares $11 mill is off the books. Kudos to Pridham.
