a better question would be which teams build a statue for one of their players

Perhaps one day we will see Pat and Johnny standing next to Bobby and Stan.

Disrespect to Jason smith but Ryan smyth should've been captain of that team after Doug weight left. Jason smith never did anything leader wise.

Just announced today 19 is being retired by the rangers long overdue. And 88 is being retired by the flyers. Recchi will prolly have to wait another year before number 8 goes up.

Even if he doesn't make the hall should Doug weight have his number 39 hung in Edmonton & in St. Louis. Or one of the two.

Sergei Gonchar for Washington?

LOL OP LOL

We're still fighting over whether Bondra and Kolzig get their numbers retired and OP thinks Sergei Gonchar is in the conversation?

Loved Weight in Edmonton, he was my favourite player when I was a kid. The Oilers will not and should not retire his number. The criteria in EDM is you have to be a HOFer. It’s a high bar as well it should be.

Retiring numbers is dumb.

Agreed. Too arbitrary, too personal- like, Hasek in Buffalo. Obviously that's a lock, but then personalities and management get involved.. meanwhile if you really wanna respect a guy, shit, making sure his number is never ever seen again seems a silly way to do it. I get the intent, but I'd much prefer a ring of honor sorta thing where you maybe contact the player to get his permission, wear a patch with his name, something like that. Lafontaine was #16- I had to look that up. But if a player contacted him, got that OK.. I'd love him so much more or hate him that much worse. Meanwhile the OG would be mentioned damn near every broadcast, giving the respect to the player that's assumed (but largely lacking) when you just hang his number from the rafters.

Reading over this thread, which goes back years, a number of posters have championed jersey retirement criteria that are a heck of a lot more restrictive than those employed by teams.

Clubs retire jerseys for a host of reasons... long tenure, excellence, leadership and team success over that span, particular leadership in especially lean times, or a combination thereof. HOF qualifications are not typically prerequisites.

Teams will also sometimes use those ceremonies to honor their own club past (or a successful era) as much as the player. As far as timing goes, teams may elect to do so when the club is struggling, judging that the fans could use a reminder of better times. Sometimes those types of retirement come in waves, as a team honors an era or dynasty.

Moreover, sometimes a retirement may come after a longstanding rift has been sealed between a player and club, perhaps decades overdue. The timing isn't always obvious, but is owed to a number of reasons.

I don't think any numbers should be retired--maybe catastrophic loss of life--just have a banner of honor or some shit. Add their name to it. Why does the number need to retired and restricted from use?

Jersey retirement is the best thing about north american sports. It's a great honor, showing how much a single guy can mean for an organisation. I appreciate jersey retirement more than HoF inclusion, even though some of the players are not even close to sniff HoF, because for a single team you mean so much nobody is going to touch your legacy in any way.

Al Hamilton isn't in the hall. And number 3 is retired so Edmonton should make an exception for weight and smyth.

Ik Doug weight unfortunately prolly won't go into the hall even though he's only been retired for 9 years this year will be his 6th for induction, but look at how long it took rogie vachon and Phil Housley it took vachon 31 years to get in and housley it took him 11. Not everybody is a first through 3rd ballot hall of famer.
