As Tawnos pointed out, thats a steep price to pay for both Stepan and McDonagh, to take advantage of the Rangers vulnerability.

The other part of it, is that Stepan and McDonagh actually have to sign the offer sheet, meaning they are happy with leaving - From what I gather i really don't see either of them really wanting to leave the Rangers, in a great city, with a great goalie, a chance to win on a franchise that they know treats them like kings.

It would have to be some kind of terms for either of them to sign an offer sheet and if they do, well good for them - As much as I love both of them, if they want to leave (especially Step) the Rangers for an additional million or two per, let em go and take all of those picks to the bank.

But again, I dont see either of them doing that and I think the Rangers have a good indication they wouldnt either which is why they are taking their time. Theyll be signed soon.

I'd love to see a team dish an offer sheet our way and have it go unsigned followed by Glen signing both Wisconsin and then unleash fury in his final years as a GM on whichever team offer sheets him.

We desperately need to acquire a top 6 scorer on the LW. I've done some looking around to look at teams and their situation, the Calgary Flames would be perfect trade parters, they are in rebuild mode and we are in now mode, and they have a player who stands out to me, Curtis Glencross. This is the trade details..

:rangers
Curtis Glencross
Shane O'Brien

:flames
JT Miller
Brian Boyle
3rd round pick

Chris Kreider -- Derek Stepan -- Rick Nash
Curtis Glencross -- Derick Brassard -- Ryan Callahan
Carl Hagelin -- Brad Richards -- Beniot Pouliot/Danny Kristo
Mats Zuccerelo -- Dominic Moore -- Derek Dorsett

I want no part of O'Brien, and why would you want to deal Miller for Curtis Glencross? He's a nice player, but he's on the wrong side of 30 and is more of a third liner than a 2nd liner. Big time pass on that.

Right that's what I meant, since we r close to the cap this year, they get less now and more later

but you aren't understanding it doesn't make a difference. if you sign a player for 4 years, $16 mil then the cap hit is $4 mil every year. it doesn't matter how you split up the payments and when he actually gets paid, the cap hit does NOT change.

the only thing that changes is how big a check dolan has to write each year

This is right. A deal that goes 5/5/3/3 has the same cap hit in each of those seasons as a deal that goes 3/3/5/5.

Let's lay out a little realistic scenario here.

McDonagh resigns for $4.5m/year long-term contract.
Hagelin resigns for $2m/year
Falk resigns for $850k/year
Zuccarello resigns for $1.3m/year

That would leave the Rangers with just over $7m in summer cap space left over for Stepan. Is someone going to offer sheet Stepan for more than $7m? Not as far as I can tell. I doubt he would even get an offer sheet for $6m.

That being said, let's pretend that Stepan gets offer sheeted for $7m and the Rangers match. What would a lineup have to look like to fit under the cap once Callahan and Hagelin come back? If you bury Powe and Asham and trade Boyle and Pyatt for trash, you can look something like this:

Is that cutting it close? Absolutely. Is that roster much worse than the one we're already talking about playing now? Not really. The loss of Boyle hurts, but other than that, Mashinter/Haley isn't much of a downgrade from Pyatt.

The whole point of doing this is to combat the idea that the Rangers are somehow "vulnerable" to offer sheets. If Stepan gets an outrageous offer sheet of $7m, the team can still make it work.

I actually like that line up, regardless of whether Stepan gets offersheeted or not, which I don't think he will be.

To take one step further, at 4.5M for Stepan (More realistic), Rangers would have 2.6M of capspace available.

Oh ok nevermind then

The Rangers’ two other prized restricted free agents are speedy winger Carl Hagelin, also arbitration eligible, and first-line center Derek Stepan, who is not. If neither McDonagh nor Hagelin files by Wednesday, the Rangers have the option of filing for arbitration on Thursday.

This would mean that no other team can put in an offer sheet and they have to negotiate exclusively with the Rangers right? as far as Mcdonagh and Hagelin go.

anything under 5mil is robbery in paying for Stepan and McDonagh

i agree. if we could lock them up long term under 5 million it would be great. i would love for both of them to sign identical contracts similar to the hamonic one. i have no idea how the isles got such a steal. hopefully 6+ years 3-5 million per year for both of them.

Yep. Wouldn't shock me to see the Rangers file for arbitration on both on Thurs. if contracts aren't done yet while they work out the deals. That frees up room to match any Stepan offer sheet if need be.

Wonder if the Ducks are open to moving Sami Vatanen. I'd move JT Miller for him straight up. Anaheim reunites the Miller-Rakell-Noesen line from Plymouth.

no way i move Miller.... and Ducks wont move Vatanen..

The Canes didn't need another scoring winger, at all.

I'd advocate chasing Skinner now, but, we don't have the cap space.
