But that's the thing. Why would we be super aggressive last year (not knowing we'd get Lafreniere and being in an objectively further behind position) and then be super passive this year

?
The off-season isn’t over yet . Look I get it our fan base wants big splashes constantly but it’s just unrealistic

Exactly, this offseason is still in progress, and there will still be a few moves left both internally (TDA, Strome) and externally (now that bringing back Fast is off the table).

Who are the top depth forwards out there?
Fast, Girgensons, Larsson, Nichushkin, Turris, Koivu, Smith, Ryan, and some other guys.

This sounds like our entire history.

But it has been very black and white. We've made competitive moves and we've made "tear it down" moves. We haven't done much of anything in terms of transitional moves or bringing in stop-gaps. We have positions where we're absolutely set and others that are a dumpster fire.

I'm comfortable that the organization knows where we are a dumpster fire and is actively working on it. I also believe they are looking at the future as much as they are this upcoming season, and will show patience with the process. The worst thing they can do is sign the wrong guys...so I'm fine waiting until the right opportunities present themselves.

I also think part of it is that Deangelo and Strome are both huge uncertainties as to what they could be awarded in arbitration. Honestly, pretty large ranges for both.

These labels are from the fans not the organization. But in the last 24 months we’ve only made moves that has either improved the roster immediately or in the very near future. It’s all about progressing forward and becoming competitive. Most importantly is that it come naturally. I think management has been well balanced in the Decision they have been making for the past 2 seasons.

It's nothing like this team has done before, basically tearing it down and rebuilding. If you were expecting a stanley cup next year you are going to be seriously disappointed as usual. Another year or two I think this team will be a serious contender.

GMs aren't absolved from missing out on a player, so long as they "made an offer". GMs have more power than just making or declining to make offers.

Fast should have been a layup fo us to keep. The fact that he signed for so little with Carolina is an indication that we didnt try hard enough to keep him. It's a loss, a pretty ugly one.

Gorton apologists can sugarcoat it all they want, but its pretty self-explanatory.

This is really really stupid. I don't know how old you are but most people in their career make moves from a company that becomes stale, not necessarily for the money and sometimes people move because they don't like their city. The assumption here is that as long Gorton tries Fast will stay a Ranger, that's just unrealistic. I guess if Gorton gave him a 5 million dollar contract or something, but that's not realistic.

I wonder if by some chance they are entertaining the idea of getting Hall or another player and therefore couldn't spend money on a RW? Not saying its what id do but it seems strange to let fast go for so little.

I feel like a lot of the recent moves we've made cant be categorized as "all-in" or "tear it down". That would be like trading your guys as rentals at the deadline for picks or vice versa.

If anything, most of our moves are transitional moves or stop-gaps. Panarin, Trouba, Fox, are all long term transitional moves, that will have an impact on this team for years to come. JJ is a stop gap.

But we're not doing that. One year into the rebuild we had one of our most aggressive offseasons ever.

And that was fine but now we're back to "let's just wait for things to develop." Then why did we make all those signings?

I don't understand why no one has offer sheeted any of the Tampa guys (Sergachev & Cirelli) yet?

We don't know if any offer sheets have been given, we just know that none have been signed. It's up to the player to sign it, and it's way too early in the process for them to do that.

There's no such thing as a long-term transitional move. We signed Panarin to make the team better right away. We re-signed Kreider to keep the quality of team right where it's at.

That's very inconsistent with what we've done this offseason.

There is such a thing as a long term transitional move. Panarin both makes the team better right away as well as makes the team better in 3 years and beyond. It can be both.

All our RFAs filed for arbitration. Let’s see how that pans out before assuming they decided to do nothing.
What's going to be left to do?

Free agency is effectively over for us at this point and if we settle with Strome and ADA, we don't have viable trade chips to bring back anything significant.

I get that you want a coherent plan, but the idea that you shouldn't adapt when conditions change is kind of silly.

Last year we made the big signings. This year we will make the big trades to round out the roster. But it takes time to get those trades done. The plan is moving along just fine.

Just because we signed a player to help right now doesn’t mean they expect them to have a impact only right now. IMO the bread man and kreider signings are not just for the next seasons but beyond that. When we are competing for the cup we are still going to need those players.

But also remember you are just a fan. JD and Gorts aren’t just going to tell some fan the plan of the future just because it doesn’t make sense to them. If anything they have shown they like to keep things extremely close to the vest

Absolutely nobody is asking for a big splash.
There is definitely a level between loading up for a Stanley Cup run, and whatever it is the Rangers have decided to do.

Looks like they may have overplayed their hands on some players that they thought they would be rid of, and thusly don’t have as much to work with as they may have hoped. As you said this doesn’t mean big splash, but with the contracts going out, not having the Johnson commitment, and have that extra million to play with suddenly seems like it would be making a difference right about now.

What's stupid is thinking that Fast hates it here so much that it would take a $5 million offer to get him to not sign in motherf***ing Carolina for $2 million, and that GMs are powerless to do anything other than make monetary offers. GMs and Presidents, while were at it, are responsible for practically everything. If Fast wasn't happy here, I'm not convinced they adequately responded to that.
