It doesn't work that way. We could bury Johnson and he would only cost 75k against the cap. I'm reasonably certain that 75k wasn't the difference between getting Wennberg and not.

Also consider that if Miller is on the team instead of Johnson, hit cap hit will be higher since we have to account for his 300k bonus. No matter who we put in that spot, they are going to cost at least 700k.
We could also not sign Johnson and not have to worry about burying him AND upgrade the center position on a one year deal that wouldn’t have broken the bank. It kind of does work this way. Johnson is not likely to add value over a replacement player. Wennberg would have been an upgrade, and they could have likely gotten him for a 1yr deal under 3m. That’s much better value.

1.15 is not peanuts. If we lost on a guy like Wennberg, because we couldn’t up our bid, BECAUSE we had to allocate that money to Johnson; then yeah. That is a major problem. If you can’t see this, despite it clearly being spelled out for you, then I don’t know what else to say. Wennberg at 2.5-3m and Hajek is better than what we currently have at forward and Johnson. It’s not rocket science.

Ugh let’s do simple math ... 1.15 million -800k (Likely salary of another spare D)

Yep that makes a massive difference

Also Wennberg stinks .. that’s why he got bought out

Exactly rookie season ....could go on but you won’t get it so I quit

When the dust settles and the team starts in 3 months let’s see what the roster looks like

Over the last ten years forwards selected first overall have averaged 59 points per 82 games with a median of 58. Hughes is the only one who had a bad year. Seems pretty obvious we should be banking on him providing that sort of production unless we're going to be unobjectively pessimistic despite past history.

Hughes 0.92
Hischier 2.38
Matthews 2.17
McDavid 2.73
MacKinnon 2.12
Nugent-Hopkins 1.96
Hall 1.57
Yakupov 2.14

We can have a deep prospect pool and be competitive. They're not mutually exclusive.

So it's Jack Johnson that will keep this team from being competitive? Then:

1) This team is in worse shape then you think

2) This (re)build is just starting

3) Getting a guy who is the difference between competitive and not was signed for one year and 1.15M.

Hahahha wow these takes are just getting worse and worse.
The only thing getting worse is the Johnson signing. If we are getting outbid by the f’n Panthers for Wennberg, and possibly the Blue Jackets for Koivu, because we are on a tight budget, then that’s a problem.

Yeah, our offer for Wennberg had absolutely nothing... and I mean NOTHING... to do with signing Johnson. We could have upped our bid for Wennberg easily.

The point is that a replacement player is going to cost basically the same, if not more, so signing him didn't impact our ability to sign Wennberg.

You are also making an assumption that if we had equaled or bested Florida's offer, Wennberg would have signed with us, and you don't know that.

What do the pundits here think about the Rangers and Fast coming back together to make a deal happen? I haven't heard his name in any rumors except Nashville

It's the Johnson signing and adding no one (so far. SO FAR, because maybe they will add a Granlund or a Haula) who can and will contribute to the team.

You are assuming the Rangers would have been willing to up their numbers to Wennberg and Koivu. Maybe. We don't know.

Wennberg is coming off a down season. But we do not know that he stinks. He could be a change of scene guy like Karlsson. Also is is an outright upgrade on what the Rangers have currently. Johnson is the one that we know stinks. Him getting 1.15 million means it is 1.15 million that can’t be used elsewhere. It’s pretty black and white. Bitetto, who signed a vet minimum (I think) two way deal can do exactly what Johnson can.

I don’t believe that. A one year deal at less than 3m is not cost prohibitive. They couldn’t beat the Panthers deal? Come on.

That replacement player is Bitetto. And he did sign. And yeah I am going to make that assumption that a player would rather play on the Rangers than the Panthers.
