We could also not sign Johnson and not have to worry about burying him AND upgrade the center position on a one year deal that wouldn’t have broken the bank. It kind of does work this way. Johnson is not likely to add value over a replacement player. Wennberg would have been an upgrade, and they could have likely gotten him for a 1yr deal under 3m. That’s much better value.It doesn't work that way. We could bury Johnson and he would only cost 75k against the cap. I'm reasonably certain that 75k wasn't the difference between getting Wennberg and not.
Also consider that if Miller is on the team instead of Johnson, hit cap hit will be higher since we have to account for his 300k bonus. No matter who we put in that spot, they are going to cost at least 700k.
