Guys, forget about Wennberg. He is not good at all. Too soft for shutdown player and brings nothing offensively. Rangers lost nothing not signing him. Also, he is very good friend with Nutivaara who was traded to Panthers. And their girlfriends are besties. For me, its the main reason he has chosen Florida over NY.

Yes. They got outbid. You are still describing bidding.

no bidding would be countering their offer with an offer...making an offer that you think is fair and then walking away when talking about a mediocre depth player is called being smart. You bid for panarin. you don't bid for wennberg.

15 hours into free agency and we don't have a complete roster...definitely time to judge the offseason LOL

Well, so far we haven't signed anyone worthwhile...and have actually gotten worse by the Johnson signing. We're worse than we were two days ago. Still time, but a lot of the good players are gone.

What led you to believe that the Rangers were going to be active in free agency?

Didn't expect us to be active on the FA market. Believe me, I wasn't expecting Hall or Pietrangelo or whomever. But I was expecting to sign guys that could push for roster spots. Aside from Rooney (arguably), we haven't signed anyone who will help the big club. Hartford, yes. But not New York.

That's plenty of space to offer a bigger deal to Wennberg. And guess what? It's exactly the same amount of space as it would've been even had they not signed Johnson.
I don’t agree but that’s fine. I think it’s pretty straightforward. If they didn’t spend 1.15m, then they would have 1.15m more.

No, they're not related. But what about adding players in free agency who will actually contribute to the success of the team?
If you actually think that the FO is actively adding players in free agency who will not contribute to the success of the team, I'm really not sure what there is to discuss.

They put in an offer. That’s a bid. They lost, thus they were outbid. I’m not arguing this anymore. Walking away from a multi-million dollar offer is smart. Walking away from a six figure difference if they want the player, is less smart.

If they didn't spend $1.15m on Johnson, they'd have to at least spend $700k on someone for the same roster spot.

How do people not understand what bidding is.

The Rangers are putting in their offers. That is a bid. They are playing within their own confines and that is how they should. There is literally no rush whatsoever with this core. Deciding that these mediocre free agent players are must have and overpaying in years is how mistakes are made.

Okay so of the 7 players we signed yesterday, who are you most excited to see? Who do you think will contribute?
I'm excited that the 7 guys they signed allow them not to rush the prospects they have in-house already. I'm excited those 7 gives the Rangers the flexibility to keep those guys where they are. And with another irregular season coming up, that has a ton of value. And that is how they will contribute the most. It has a minot affect on this season, but it could have an enormous impact on the franchise moving forward.

That Johnson will be a 6/7 d doesn't really change anything. If Miller or Hajek or someone else wins a spot then he will be the 7 defenseman. But are a guy who knows Martin's system they could much worse than a stopgap like JJ.

Johnson is not holding up their other FA moves.

No matter what, they were signing someone to give them a buffer.

There is going to be a hesitancy to keep guys shuttling back and forth next season. A lot of younger players are going to stay put - be it in the AHL, or overseas on loans.

Additoonally, the Rangers didn’t have any desire to get into bidding wars for guys like Wennberg, nor do they want to keep bidding on Granlund.
