Jack Johnson's contract was a huge overpay, and very expensive for us.
You realize it’s a rebuild and they are trying to avoid expensive contracts right ?

Tons of options still available
I mean let’s look at Wennberg, (for example). Signed for Florida 1yr /2.25m. Apparently the Rangers were in on him, but were outbid by the Panthers. This is not a salary that breaks the bank, and it should not have been prohibitive to the Rangers.

If the Rangers don’t spend 1m on Johnson, who...let’s say the analytics don’t like, then they can up that offer for Wennberg, who is obviously more likely to be a positive impact than Johnson is. In this economy, there are fine margins with this. This stuff matters, can’t be wasting seven figure salaries on bad players. It has impact elsewhere.

Are we? Are we still in a rebuild? Panarin, Zibanejad, Lafreniere, Kreider, Trouba...And signing 33-year old Jack Johnson doesn't scream rebuild.

So do I really need to list the age of the other roster players ?

Did JD not just say be patient ? What exactly do you want them to do given the cap space ?

Plus I guarantee they will make a move to get better

Alright here’s your update:

Rangers made an offer for Wennberg. Wasn’t higher than Florida’s.

Suspect a similar deal is on the table for Granlund.

ADA obviously unlikely to go to Calgary now, but a deal with them isn’t dead.

Keep an eye on LA and St. Louis when it comes to ADA discussions.

No interest in Johnson at this time.

Monitoring Sergachev
Imagining ada doesn’t happen until free agents are all signed.

You are aware 1.15 is peanuts right ? A entry level contract isn’t much less than that . Complaining about a 1 yr deal on Johnson is over board

Does he stink . Likely . Will a kid like Hajek play over him . Also likely if they play better

It doesn't work that way. We could bury Johnson and he would only cost 75k against the cap. I'm reasonably certain that 75k wasn't the difference between getting Wennberg and not.

Also consider that if Miller is on the team instead of Johnson, hit cap hit will be higher since we have to account for his 300k bonus. No matter who we put in that spot, they are going to cost at least 700k.

Probably. If it happens at all.

Rangers aren’t going to rush this with him.

Seems likely though that if they do keep him and don't make any changes he'd be on a bridge deal, not a long term extension? Same with Strome.

So what? So we're going to throw away this season? Waste a ready-made Lafreniere's rookie season? Hell, we might as well fire Quinn now.

Still hoping we trade Tony either for a lhd, center or just futures.

Would’ve liked Brodie at the price that Toronto paid. Even though he’s historically played on the right side, as a lefty he should be able to play on the left and would’ve been a good fit in our top-4 paired with either Trouba or Fox.

Do you have a sense whether the braintrust would be happy to part ways with ADA, or if they view it as a necessary evil due to money and depth issues.

1.15 is not peanuts. If we lost on a guy like Wennberg, because we couldn’t up our bid, BECAUSE we had to allocate that money to Johnson; then yeah. That is a major problem. If you can’t see this, despite it clearly being spelled out for you, then I don’t know what else to say. Wennberg at 2.5-3m and Hajek is better than what we currently have at forward and Johnson. It’s not rocket science.

Exactly rookie season ....could go on but you won’t get it so I quit

When the dust settles and the team starts in 3 months let’s see what the roster looks like
