Yeah they were considered to be the "front runner" for EK.

Not that they had a deal in place for him.

His leaders have pretty much changed by the minute, but the Rangers have consistently been put on the "not interested" list. This isn't by design either, as they wouldn't lose anything by their involvement being common knowledge.

They didn't even attempt to speak to Tavares or even sniff JVR. Now EK exists in a different stratosphere than those 2, but their lack of interest here lines up with their lack of interest in other big names.

JVR is not even comparable to these 2 and Tavares was never going to sign on for the Rangers.

OK so take this with a grain of salt.

Friend of a friend says he has a source in the Devils organization. This is the "supposed trade"... Again, grain of salt, because I don't buy this myself.

Three way between NJD, TBL, OTT. Basically TBL gets Karlsson, NJD gets Callahan + Ryan + Picks + Prospects. Supposedly Zacha is involved here too... Going to guess Ottawa gets him, but I don't know what else.

Personally i don't buy it. NJD shouldn't take on that much salary
I hope the Devils are that dumb

I don't think JVR or Tavares are comparable to EK.

But the Rangers didn't even try to get involved with those guys. They were completely indifferent during the UFA hysteria this year. Not being interested in Karlsson (at this juncture, who knows how they'll feel if hes a UFA a year from now) fits in with the way they've been doing business.

Please don’t even put that pipe dream in my head, thanks.

I think hes a winger at this level so mayyybbeee but I can't imagine Colorado would want to give up on him without a pretty significant add from our end, if at all.

If Colorado came calling for Hayes, you can bet the Rangers asked for him though. He' doesn't check every single box on the Ranger check list, he is the Ranger checklist.

ESPN Insider matched up "available" players with best fits

Best trade fits for Pacioretty, Panarin, Skinner and more

Tyson Jost.

The Avs were one the teams interested in Hayes 4 years ago.

I don't think Colorado moves Jost

I'll take Colorado 2019 1st (Maybe the are okay to just settle for the Ottawa pick). A guy like Barrie would have made sense last year, (although I am not a big Barrie fan) but I don't think Colorado is in a position to move him now that they are a playoff team.

But yeah. If the Rangers are moving Hayes, and can't get the magical RHD, then I think I do Hayes for Colorado's 1st rounder.

I kind of hope so too.

I tried to think through the proposal and make some sense of it. See below:

I don't have specifics but I have seen the following names:

Tyler Johnson
Pavel Zacha
Ryan Callahan
Bobby Ryan
Erik Karlsson
Picks
Another prospect or two

Supposedly the Devils are taking on Johnson AND Ryan AND Callahan, but something seems off there. My guess is that the Devils want more center depth and see Johnson as an option. I have no idea where Ryan fits in this deal. Personally i don't buy it. NJD shouldn't take on that much salary.

I would think the only involvement here for the Rangers is that they want to trade that Tampa Bay 2nd/1st rounder back to Tampa so that the conditions can be stripped and Tampa can use it to send to the Devils as payment for taking on Callahan.

Rangers might actually get some good value here. Depends on how bad Tampa wants Karlsson. If Gorton can extort Yzerman into swapping that conditional 2nd/1st with a known quantity prospect, that's a move I see Gorton making. Yzerman has probably been trying to get them to take Callahan for said prospect.

Hayes is worth more than just that pick.

I would move both Hayes and Zucc for Jost with out blinking.

You’ve been saying for a while that Karlsson wants to be a Ranger. Do you have some potential inside knowledge, or are you just supremely confident?

I am not vetted nor do I want to go through the process. I suspect I would have to give up some privacy and that is a non starter for me. Lets just call it a hunch for now and hopefully I wont have to wear the clown hat when all is said and done.

Fair enough.

Hayes filed but hearings aren't until the end of the month.

Doubtful it goes that far. He'll either get a contract or get traded somewhere and get that contract.

Oh trust me no matter what happens with EK there are many on here who are much more deserving of that hat than you are.

Well here in lies the difference between the Devils and the Rangers.

The Rangers are attractive to free agents. The Devils are not.

The Devils need to stay competitive so Hall doesn't walk, so they are a team that HAS to roll the dice on Ryan, or Johnson, or Callahan, etc salvaging their value while they are under term. That is how they have to acquire talent - see the Stepan to Arizona trade; Stepan isn't signing that deal with the Coyotes as a UFA.

The Rangers have better uses for their cap space, and need to be putting their eggs into the 2019 FA Class basket (namely Panarin, who we know wants to come here).

I rather go for Panarin, and have money left in the bank to get another upgrade in Free Agency, as opposed to waste Cap space on the obvious cap dumps in the hopes that a prospect that neither Tampa nor Ottawa wants/feels strongly about gets attached in the deal. I need more that that to agree to give Tampa a super team.

I really hope your hunch is correct. I’ve had a hunch (an actual hunch, not a “hunch”) that we’d trade for Karlsson for awhile.

Me too, but why would Colorado? I feel like Colorado is super high on Jost, and they should be.

I agree Hayes is worth more than Colorado's pick, but its a good place to start. They aren't getting the Ottawa pick for him.

You think so? Was never too crazy about Hayes, and with Vladdy re-signing, moving him def is a possibility.

Are you able to say if you think EK will be a Ranger via trade or via free agency?

Tampa has always been the Rangers biggest threat in terms of getting Karlsson, and they seem to be in pretty good position to do so, but it could also be media chatter.

TB can't take on Karlsson without dumping a decent chunk of salary. Their current cap space is $3,446,220. One of the following have to be moved:

Callahan, Ryan (NTC)
Johnson, Tyler (NTC)
Kucherov, Nikita (RFA next year - so need to factor in what he will make + EK)
Killorn, Alex (NTC)
Palat, Ondrej (NTC)
Coburn, Braydon (NTC)
Strålman, Anton (NTC)

Here's a big Q, will any of those players waive to go to Ottawa? Seeing what's going on, probably not. Would they go to another team? Maybe ...

They also just extended JTM for 5+ and he has value, if not to us in trade.
Sens get by w/just Foote + taking on 10 m cap benefits incl Ryan to TB
let him be there prob
We take on JT + Cally + MacArthur, but move Staal + Smith to OTT.
We lose 10ish m cap hit, but much better than Ryan and we charge TB for the privelege.
What I said back at post 168.
Either that or we deal w/Ott directly for a $ deal.

I always had the feeling that EK would end up a Ranger via Free Agency.

But I'm also not deluded enough to think that we're option A-Z for him. I think he'd sign in Tampa in a heartbeat.

You think so? Was never too crazy about Hayes, and with Vladdy re-signing, moving him def is a possibility.

If the Rangers aren't going to budge on trading Hayes for only a top 4 RHD I think he stays.

I don't know how strong that desire is though. I'm sure that they'd part with him for young NHL ready bodies as well.

If I was a betting man I would say that he wants to get his future sorted out as soon as possible. My guess is that with all the complications and drama outside of the rink, the fact that he might lose out on a beneficial tax situation is less important to him compared to being able to play his hockey among friends in a city tailored to his nature.
