Speculation: Free Agent Frenzy Part III - Will EK stay or will EK go?

I always had the feeling that EK would end up a Ranger via Free Agency.

But I'm also not deluded enough to think that we're option A-Z for him. I think he'd sign in Tampa in a heartbeat.

If the Rangers aren't going to budge on trading Hayes for only a top 4 RHD I think he stays.

I don't know how strong that desire is though. I'm sure that they'd part with him for young NHL ready bodies as well.

That’s always seemed more Brooks’ interpretation than the actual Ranger desires. I think Gorton wants to accumulate assets.

I'm getting a read that Ottawa is scorching all relations in a desperation attempt by Dorian and Melnyk to get whatever the best they possibly can for Karlsson.

The "leaks" about Dallas, and most notably Tampa, recently is them calling in all favors and pulling out all stops to those they can to try and spread misinformation. It will burn bridges with contacts, reliability, sources, and mouthpieces but I really don't think they care at all. This is the do or die and neither party cares about relations after this.

This just reeks of twisted dealing and snake-like behavior.

I also don't think they end up with any better of deal than a good GM and owner originally would be able to get.

I don't know if this will settle any time soon, but multiple "insiders" and new-personnel have been snake-bitten by dishonesty purposefully "leaking" out of the Ottawa brass.

As hard as it is to believe Ottawa will package Ryan with EK, or he will be had for some cap-for-less-dollars contract, or sergrachev won't be the return, it is almost impossible to believe Johnson AND Callahan will waive their negotiated clauses.

The secret of Yzerman's deflated cap hits is partly the tax free environment but probably his broad use of no trade clauses. These guys left dollars on the table to stay put. They will give up this right and literally get paid less to lose in Ottawa or New York? Get bounced in the first round at the Rock? So their buddies can lift a cup instead?

So either Yzerman has insane leverage over Cally, Johnson, Killorn, etc or it's not happening with these players.

And what does stevie do? He asks Callahan for his no trade list, since it just went from the full to partial, after all this news. Ryan has Ottawa, New York, NJ at the top, followed by the next 13 teams ranked by cap space. I'm not seeing it.

Ottawa wants Glass, Foote or Heiskanen. They want a 1st to replace theirs. They'll need some NHL, non elc bodies to get the cap up to the floor. They'll need some more, or Bobby Ryan going the other way.

To follow your thinking, did Ottawa leak the Callahan/Johnson names falsely because it sounded good with NYR involved? Ottawa wants EK out of conference so they may be using TB for leverage and they don't care about salting the earth. The leak trade details don't make sense so maybe it was all to get the other suitors involved.

1. No

2. Not the NHLs problem NY taxes (and COL) are asinine relative to most of the rest of the country

3. Different markets have different advantages...city of NY is a huge selling point to many especially young college kids

4. Would argue CAD/USD is a bigger issue...if we make this exception should Canadian players be paid in CAD? Help those owners take out currency risk from costs

State income tax rates vary dramatically. Here’s a chart that will explain

State Individual Income Tax Rates and Brackets for 2018 - Tax Foundation

This, of course, does not take into account the extra 5% you get whacked for the privilidge of working in The City.

There is a way around high taxes in Canada. It’s not a perfect solution but it does reduce what a player has to pay. Can’t find the article but there’s been a lot written about it recently.

Taxes are a big issue. There was a chart not too long ago that showed the difference Tavares would have made with different teams. It was striking. If I was running the Rangers (and Sharks, and Kings etc etc) I’d be making a team by team adjustment part of the next collective bargaining agreement. This is an issue Uncle Larry (rightfully) keeps pushing.

TB can't take on Karlsson without dumping a decent chunk of salary. Their current cap space is $3,446,220. One of the following have to be moved:

Callahan, Ryan (NTC)
Johnson, Tyler (NTC)
Kucherov, Nikita (RFA next year - so need to factor in what he will make + EK)
Killorn, Alex (NTC)
Palat, Ondrej (NTC)
Coburn, Braydon (NTC)
Strålman, Anton (NTC)

Here's a big Q, will any of those players waive to go to Ottawa? Seeing what's going on, probably not. Would they go to another team? Maybe ...
If one of these guys waive their NTC to come to NY, isn’t it waived forever?

Haha, I work for an Accounting firm and have lived in NYC. I understand how taxes work.

My general view in terms of the NHL is that things currently work correctly. A player will want to be paid more in a high tax / high COL environment. Without going too far OT, if fans are upset that this is impacting their NHL team they should write their reps and ask where the heck all this money is going and what value they get out of being taxed so egregiously.

An argument could be made that franchise payroll expense ie the cap should be indexed for COL. Similar to opening offices in various states, often COL adjustments are made for similar positions depending on location. But good luck getting that through the CBA when all of the small market AND low tax state teams will call foul, and when the entire point of the cap is to provide consistency and parity which allowing independent payrolls prevented.

The NYR still have a huge advantage in being able to spend to the ceiling annually and residing in a vibrant, diverse, world class city.

New York likely is not one of the teams they would have to waive for, therefore it is not a waiver, and even if they did have us on their list and waived for us we would still very likely honor it

I don't think Colorado moves Jost

I'll take Colorado 2019 1st (Maybe the are okay to just settle for the Ottawa pick). A guy like Barrie would have made sense last year, (although I am not a big Barrie fan) but I don't think Colorado is in a position to move him now that they are a playoff team.

But yeah. If the Rangers are moving Hayes, and can't get the magical RHD, then I think I do Hayes for Colorado's 1st rounder.
I like Jost toobut I think a more realistic ask is the lower of Colorado’s two firsts next year and Vladimir Kamenev

Dont players get taxed at the rate where their games are? Still an advantage to non income tax states but would only apply to 42 games.

yes its based on where the games are played...so it applies to all the home games plus any road games in states that also don't have taxes. but still a big difference.

and of course that doesn't apply to signing bonuses that are 100% paid in your 'home' state

That's where a lot of contracts are headed.. You can't be bought out either or rather there's no benefit to being bought out ( guessing this will be addressed in the new CBA in 2019 or 2022 )

its also lockout insurance since you get paid the full bonus even if there is no season or a partial season

I'm okay with that for sure.

The Rangers are going to have such a strong Russian core. Will be interested to see how Quinn handles it.

Yes, this. As dumb as I think it is, the whole point of the cap is to prop up the small, non traditional markets. It's not a coincidence that these markets also happen to be in low tax states. Supply and demand. Low taxes are an incentive to live somewhere you otherwise wouldn't want to, as are low property costs.

NYC is next level stupid though. I "escaped" and won't be back. I don't understand the demand at all myself, but I'm the type of person who'd take the Grand Canyon over a fancy restaurant every damn time.

Considering MSL was demanding a trade to only 1 team, he did pretty damn well. MSL was way past his Art Ross form.

Tampa could have kept him until the summer when his NTC expired and then traded him anywhere. Rangers also had an expiring asset in Callahan.
