Continually work as the facilitator for a Karlsson trade and always pull out last second. Keep it up past the deadline, and sign him for free in July. Clearly a flawless plan.

TB can't take on Karlsson without dumping a decent chunk of salary. Their current cap space is $3,446,220. One of the following have to be moved:

Callahan, Ryan (NTC)
Johnson, Tyler (NTC)
Kucherov, Nikita (RFA next year - so need to factor in what he will make + EK)
Killorn, Alex (NTC)
Palat, Ondrej (NTC)
Coburn, Braydon (NTC)
Strålman, Anton (NTC)

Here's a big Q, will any of those players waive to go to Ottawa? Seeing what's going on, probably not. Would they go to another team? Maybe ...

Howden seems like the obvious replacement but we could always bump Zibby to wing. I'd always thought he would excel at wing.

Id give him the Bozak contract, in that way it expires when the the kids are RFA's
 
One would have to imagine that Ottawa wants at least a first in next years draft. That’s a priority. So if Tampa is dead set on making a deal for Karlsson AND also shed salary- the rangers are primed to be apart of the deal. Gorton has the advantage here. He doesn’t have to make a deal. In that case, Stevie would have to be more creative moving prospects and future picks he might not want to. Karlsson on Tampa. Who cares? Rangers conditional second likely becomes a first. Don’t do a deal just to do a deal.

rumors say of the trade suitors he only agreed to extend in Tampa so if we make the deal ourselves, we are getting EK for one year.

Re: RFAs I hope none of them get NTC. NTC are ridiculous and should only be given to your top 3 players on the team. When did the NHL get to the point where every Tom, Dick, and Harry gets a NTC? Even the limited NTCs are a bit weird.

Maybe Karlsson isn't talking extension. He wants to hit the open market like Tavares. He's so close to free agency, why not choose where you want to play?

I think RFAs cannot get NTC unless the deal goes into their UFA years and only those years the player should be a UFA is the NTC active

I would guess Ottawa is trying to get a bidding war going. They used Dallas to get Tampa in the conversation. They probably went back to Dallas and Vegas and upped the ante. I want to think dorion is overplaying his hand, probably not good to start the season with this lineup. But Sakic ended up killing his trade by waiting way longer than everyone thought wise. You only need 1 dumb GM out of 30.

Imagine if Yzerman wins the NYR-TBL Callahan-MSL trade when St.Louis demanded a trade to NYR and NYR only and then wins the trade when Karlsson will only sign for an extension with TBL and TBL only.

Last week EK was a Golden Knight. A couple of days ago he was a Star and last day or so a Floridian. What is clear here is that not even the "in the know" people know what is going on. Clearly you cant fault him for not trusting the comments saying the Rangers are out. Every single source have been proven wrong so far.

I could see Ottawa insisting on two things...getting a first this year (optics) and moving Ryan in any deal. The Rangers can accommodate both of those needs for Tampa, no one else can. The price can and should be high but if Tampa is facilitating this, their payment to Ottawa would be less. Certainly an interesting chess game.

And has Karlsson actually agreed to a contract extension with Tampa? Could there be a hangup there?

With the Rangers picking up what could be half the price for karlsson, Foote and cirelli or your choice of prospects would have to go to the Rangers for facilitating Tampa becoming a powerhouse. Maybe even helping out some more by taking on Stralman for another prospect.

I wasn't aware that Tampa Bay won the St.Louis trade, but on it's face to the classic eccentrics we see around here when the trade first went down, but definitely not in hindsight
