Can someone clear something up for me? Tampa can't trade their 2019 1st or 2nd due to NYR owning the conditional 2nd right?

The assumption is that if the Rangers trade that pick back to Tampa, it can be traded again to another team... Ala strip the conditions off that pick.

Gorton should for once, one up Yzerman and make the deal without him. Go get Karlsson for yourself.

Add The Bread Man next summer along with another high draft pick and you are REBUILT.

I have to agree here. At this point Melnyk is going to shoot himself in the foot. Pony up one of the 2017/2018 1st round players + the 2019 1st + roster player (Vesey or something like that). I'd even take Ryan if they want to drop one of the 1st round players. Then take ryan and trade him at 50% to another team. That's a good use of cap space, easier than a buyout for the Rangers.

My gut is that Tampa wanted to RENT Karlsson, not take him and sign him. They CANNOT fit that contract into their team. There is no way around it, not with Hedman AND McDonagh signed for 6+ years AND Sergachev needing a new contract

Question. Does the league give a state tax credit to teams to add to their salary caps if needed? I’m assuming not. But they should. Considering NY players are paying almost an extra five percent to play half their games in NY than, say, Florida...it’d make sense.
Not to mention cost of living...

1. No

2. Not the NHLs problem NY taxes (and COL) are asinine relative to most of the rest of the country

3. Different markets have different advantages...city of NY is a huge selling point to many especially young college kids

4. Would argue CAD/USD is a bigger issue...if we make this exception should Canadian players be paid in CAD? Help those owners take out currency risk from costs

Apparently the big hold up is bobby Ryan.

Ottawa is going to have to come to grips with the fact that they’re either going to need to trade EK with out Ryan attached for 80 cents on he dollar or send the two of them to Vegas for an even more reduced return.

I assume you have a source on this...

Regardless I agree. Ottawa absolutely tanked Karlsson's value. it's either Karlsson at 80/100 cents, or Karlsson + Ryan at 65/100 cents.

As a player, I think Tyler Johnson would be a good add. 27 y/o. RHS, he makes players around him better. We have a lot of bigger forwards, we could use a smaller offensive dynamo.

The problem is of course that he has 6 years remaining on his 5m deal. But I don’t know, I get RBs point on players peaking before 30. But what does that mean exactly? Yes it means that a forward is better at 25-28 than 30-35. It doesn’t mean that younger players are better than older players. A close to 40 Pat Marleau is still a heck of a lot better than 90% of the 25 y/o in this league, right?

I think it just means that you must make sure that you pay for what you will get. If you pay the prime version of the price for a 29 y/o, it’s of course not good. But at the same price, who would I take, Pat Marleau or David Deaharnaise? I would take the former, hands down, at the same price.

So sure, a Tyler Johnson won’t peak when he is 32-33 at the end of that deal, but that fact is really not relevant. The question is, will he be worth the commitment we make towards him by taking on his contract? If it was 3-4 years, I would probably say yes. He would be a good bridge between what we have now and the kids to come. He would fit in well with our younger centers, from Ziba to Chytil to Lias to Hayes. At 6 years it’s of course more questionable...
