This is the problem with Tkachuk. There are no signs that anyone in his family is going to take anything but the maximum that they can, and that is their right.

We can barely sign him at $9 mil, and honestly, he's going to be asking for more than $11 million. Even at $9 mil, you've compromised the team quite a bit, or you've moved out a ton of bodies...like Muzzin, Kerfoot and Nylander.

It's really kind of into fantasy land... but if we are going to go all fantasy land...

Nylander, Kerfoot, Holl, Murray, 1st 2023, 1st 2024 for Tkachuk, Markstrom @ 50% and Tanev.

Still have room to sign Stastny at $2.5 mil.

Yeah I’d say rather keep our team generally together and add JT Miller than try to swing for the fence for Tkachuk and destroy the team in the process.

if cgy is blowing it up then we should try and nab markstrom for murray+first+sweeteners. Just saying.

100% on board with some trade that sees Nylander out for Tkachuk. Would have to move Kerfoot and Holl either in the same or separate trades which would give us the exact amount needed to sign the guy.

This tkachuk dream is just like the tavares signing.. bad timing

Tavares 3 years left
Matthews 2 years left
Not having matthews on dotted line before committing to another winger is arrogant in my opinion

And this magical cap rise everyone is stating.. with matthews raise plus tkachuks salary what raise in the cap is necessary to even make it viable

Isnt it only projected to be a million the next two years?

The cap is expected to see steady but not massive increases over the next couple seasons with the potential for a substantial increase occuring around 2025/6 NHL salary cap set at $82.5M for next season

That would be ideal, and something that I had wondered about.

Challenges.. Murray would only waive his NTC to come to Toronto... I don't think he'd agree to be moved to Calgary.

Second, we don't have the cap without them withholding some...

But adding Markstrom, over Murray, would be a bigger win for the team than Tkachuk. Markstrom was the guy I had hoped we'd get, if the Calgary situation had unravelled sooner. Sadly, it didn't.

Plus I am fully convinced that Marner is not the kind of player who will raise his game in the playoffs. He is also not the kind of guy who will carry a line by himself while making ridiculously high AAV.

I’m not saying I’m against the idea but Tkachuk has underwhelmed in his playoff career to date as well

Tkachuk scores at 45 point pace over his playoff career to date. He's going to cost more than Marner and is more dependent on his linemates than Marner is.

In the playoffs boardwork, taking hits to make plays, laying body, etc... becomes of paramount importance. Tkachuck is 24. He will only get better. And at 9 to 11 AAV for 8 more years will not only help Leafs on ice but also on the cap hit.

Marner is never going to be "the guy" for the Leafs; and the AAV that he will be asking on his next contract is just not going to be as fruitful for the Leafs IMO.

Tkachuck underwhelmed because he did not have offensive help that he will have with Leafs with Matthews-Nylander running the show on one line and Tkachuck-Tavares-Toffoli running the show on the other line.

Also when has Marner carried a line by himself at his cap hit? He put up career numbers with Matthews and Tavares. WIth Bozak/JVR he was average and used in a very sheltered role.

Its a simple question. Would you rather have Tkachuck at 9 to 11 AAV for 7-8 years more in the future or Marner at 13-15 AAV for 8 more years taking up cap space not allowing for quality depth?

Matthews scored with freakin' Hyman and Brown as his wingers with highest QoC. Matthews doesn't need Marner.

If the leafs truly were to target Tkachuk it would require atleast 3 moves.
1. Muzzin to the ducks for a late pick 3rd or 4th.
2. Kerfoot to a team for a late pick 3rd or 4th.
3. Nylander + Robertson + 2023 1st for Tkachuk 10x8.
4. Resign Sandin 2 x 3
5. Sign zar 1.3 x 2 and Larsson 1.3 x 2

Tkachuk Matthews Marner
Bunting Tavares Jarnkrok
Engvall Kampf Nak
Zar Larsson Anderson

Reilly Liljegren
Gio Brodie
Sandin Holl

Murray
Samsonov

On the flip side.. Tavares had his best year with the Leafs with Marner. Matthews same. He makes the team and those around him better.

Honestly, both Tkachuk and Marner will have the same cap hit %, so that's not an argument. Tkachuk will be seeking at least $11 mil, not 9-11mil.

Yes Tkachuk is more physical.

Tkachuk played with Gaudreau and Lindholm. Somehow you think he did not have offensive help?

Yes Tkachuk is only 24, and has the potential to get better. Marner is also 24, I guess he will only get better too?

Personally I’d like both Marner and Tkachuk and trade Nylander
100%.
What would need to be added to Nylander to make that attractive to Calgary?
If Tkachuk is available there will be many offers made for him that the Leafs would need to beat.

I'm not a proponent of trading for him. But Nylander alone is a PPG player now, and is pretty young. Probably have to add Kerfoot for cap reasons, and maybe a pretty decent pick.
