Can't help but feel something still has to give here. An addition to the team? Some trades that get us under the cap? In my mind we currently look like this:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander
Engvall-Kampf-Jarnkrok
Simmonds/Clifford-Gaudette-Aube-Kubel

*Currently the lines don't really allow much room for Marlies like Robertson or Anderson to fight their way on.

Muzzin-Brodie
Rielly-Holl
Giordano-Liljegren
Sandin-Benn-Mete

*Way too many D capable of NHL minutes

Wonder what the plan is. Roster still feels like we're going to see something
JT Miller - Mathews - Marner
Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Jarnkrok - Bunting
XXX - Kampf - Kubel
Really hope Knies is ready for the next step, and can bring a powerforward game to the top 6. Big jump. Doesn't sound like he'll be coming until just before the playoffs though if he does

With less retention, maybe that's close. 1.75 retained means neither team adds to their cap.

Kerfoot, Sandin, 1st, and maybe a B prospect like Abramov for Miller at 3.5 and Schenn.

Take out Sandin and Schenn.

Kerfoot, 1st., prospect, 4th. in 2024 conditional on Miller playing 8 games in the playoffs. (prospects exclude Knies and Niemala)
for
Miller

Wouldn't go higher for a 1 year rental.

I know this is a pipe dream, but is Matthew Tkachuk not exactly what this team needs? A top line player with some backbone and snarl - a guy who can play with our stars but still get dirty in the alley.

Is this a bad overpay?

Nylander, Sandin, & 2023 1st
for
Tkachuk

Would need them to take back some salary (i.e. Kerfoot, Holl, etc) and/or make subsequent moves to offload salary for picks.

Roast away!

Eric Francis predicting the end of Matthew Tkachuk in Calgary with the team elected arbitration. And throws in a stupid Auston Matthews prophecy/equivalency as well. Get a life.

Sportsnet is a garbage organization. The way this idiot just says like it's a foregone conclusion, kiss my ass. Toronto is a different market than any other Canadian city

It would have to come with an extension

The X factor here is how much these athletes value freedom of medicine. Like it or not these measures were not well received by everyone and those with the means to lives elsewhere will.

Matthews might leave, I’ve said it before, If he is a devout believer (which I suspect is true) he may not support the politics of this corporation and he has the unique skill set to choose where he goes.

We might want to think that, but when you look at his post season performances, pretty underwhelming for what his price tag is going to be going forward.

Add to the consideration Leafs are under a microscope from DOPS.

Pathetic, only one 2nd rounder in 2023

Trading for Tkachuk and then signing him for 9 million plus makes it even harder as the Leafs have then more more money invested in 4 forwards.

Is it a guarantee that cap will grow in two years or just speculation. Worst thing leafs can do is assume in two years it goes up and then stays low for another 4.

You've gotta understand that hockey media in other Canadian cities get to be rabid homers, and that they'll always take shots at the Leafs when they're in pain.

Nylander will want a raise to 9-10 million and there’s no guarantee he doesn’t go to UFA. If we can switch out Nylander for Matthew T for the next 8 years then we do it at a cost of Sandin plus 2nd

Nylander is in Forsberg territory at most, which is 8M or so right now. Maybe gets over 9M if he has 2 big seasons coming up.

He already makes 7. You think he will sign for a 1 million raise After scoring close to ppg and 35 goals. The floor is 9 in Toronto. he probably gets 9.5

Sorry but what has Nylander accomplished that warrants Johnny Hockey money ?? You are not winning anything with your 3rd best forward making that much IMO, let alone your 4th best forward making $11 and underperforming it by $3m.

I mean... yeah? If that's what his production VS comparables are. It really depends on his next season or two though. Forsberg had a 42 goal season after similar production as Nylander and signed for that.

A Team with cap space will outbid us And happily pay him 9 million plus per year. he would play on top line as well and all situations. Remember he is point per game on second line in Toronto.

They will be paying $9M for Willie in 2 years so adding MT wouldn't be the worst option at that price. But I don't think Calgary would consider it for 2 years of Willie as the core of the offer. There is uncertainty with him long term as well.
