Wouldn't it just be smart for nhl to turn off cap for several years due to how dead free agency is and how many player's need job?

There’s an additional team to pull revenue from, viewership numbers are way up and league attendance only dropped about 10% since pre-Covid, you’d think the owners would add a little more than a mil to the cap.

But then notice the people who got way richer in the last two years, they don’t care about you or your job.

Anyone else starting to think that Kadri is starting to cost himself money every second he doesn’t sign? Teams have loaded up and don’t want to move assets out, and comparables emerge, how is he gonna get 8 when Gaudreau gets 9.7 and Tkachuck gets awarded ~9?

Sandin is a work in progress.
Turned 22 in March.
He was drafted the year before Robertson.
I expect he'll continue to improve.
At 5'11", not sure he'll ever hit 200 lbs.
He is willing to engage physically.
When healthy was playing more minutes than Liljegren, although I think Liljegren should be getting both PP and PK time.
Interesting he was getting 2nd. most TOI in overtime.
My guess Leafs will regret moving him if it comes to that.

i think he’s developing fine. i’m not on the move sandin train. but i do acknowledge that he is in the mould of many of our dmen in terms of style of play. we need to replenish the muzzin style in our system. all of our d seem to be the exact same.

That cap going up is a formulaic function. In this case players owed the owners money, due to getting fully paid during Covid, when revenues dropped a great deal.

Assuming continued annual revenue growth, the salary cap will continue to increase $1 million annually until the players pay the escrow debt they owe the NHL, which is expected to be completed by the end of the 2023-24 season.

The debt was incurred during the pause in the 2019-20 season, when hockey-related revenues (HRR) flatlined with players still being paid, thus giving them more than the 50 percent of HRR they are allotted under the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The players had 20 percent of their salaries withheld in escrow that went to the NHL last season. It is 17.1 percent this season and is expected to drop to 10 percent next season and to 6 percent the following three seasons.

"We could have recouped [the debt owed] it sooner but it would have required more from the players, so we smoothed it out," Commissioner Bettman said. "But our projections in that regard are holding pretty well, so the system is working as both it was intended and projected."

So i guess you dont want puljujarvi then ;)
You got me there sire  He didn't do anything special at all in the playoffs. They also played him only on the dirty third line. Pulju was so effective the first half of the season. Like 60% of the first half, after that only his tongue went to his nose. He might get too expensive to us also so we might not want that bill for the restaurants with the tongue neither.

Would you make the deals you have proposed as the other teams?

Would you make the deals you have proposed as the other teams?
Yeah I would. Habs take on a shorter deal with Kerfoot and get a veteran RHD and offload Andersons contract (already have Gallagher, Armia, Etc.)

Dallas's window is closing quick, Muzzin is still an effective second pair D that fits their style and is a definite upgrade over Hakanpaa.

Slightly off topic but I can't come up with a single reason why a team and a player shouldn't be allowed to sign an extension 2, 3, 4 years ahead of the expiration of the current deal.
Too easy to circumvent the cap is what I have been told when ive asked in the past.
I.e you have a guy sign a 2 year deal for 2aav, and imediately sign a 6 year extension at 6aav.
If you signed the whole deal at once its 5m aav, instead you get 2x2 and a 6x6.
If you want to go more extreme, if you really want to go for it, and sign Forsberg this off season to a 2x1m and immediately give him a 5 year 10m extension, you get him at an insane rate for 2 years and pay him a bit above market the rest of the way. Total aav is 7.71m, and you save 5.71m for the first two years.

I guess if montreal cant unload any of the worse contracts

I dont see how dallas window is closing with what they have at each position

Why would the owners do anything? If the remaining unsigned players want to play next year then they will sign for less than their perceived market value. The players still owe the owners money so the owners won't do anything to further put themselves in a hole.

Really weird how there's been pretty much zero rumors about any player or team since like day 2 of UFA.
I'm guessing a lot of players/agents are refusing to accept that their market has completely gone away and any interested teams are waiting for them to come calling at 75% of what they're asking.

Those are some interesting examples of what I'd imagine the league would cite. My counter would be that I'd be absolutely fine with teams doing that because they still have the cap hit in the future so the team doesn't get off the hook they have just deferred the cap hit. Plus the player doesn't get paid handsomely for the 2 years before the extension kicks in so there's less of an incentive on the player side. The lone benefit to the player is certainty about his future income and why shouldn't a player get that certainty if a team is willing to provide it.

I have a theory why there are virtually no rumours after the 2nd day of free agency. The well-compensated hockey reporters in the establishment media with the agent connections all disappear to cottage country in Ontario and elsewhere for a month and half after the opening day of free agency.

Conclusion: player agents need to get with the times and start talking to the social media hockey reporters.

They taking it real coool and slow now, sippin mai tais and enjoying millions and millions of dollars of wealth. Not being worried and showing to the whole world that we are big ones. None of y'all can touch this.
