I really don't think Colorado can offer Kadri any sort of long term deal with MacKinnon up for a new contract next summer along with Byram and Newhook as RFAs.

Really weird how there's been pretty much zero rumors about any player or team since like day 2 of UFA.
GMs getting a grip on what they did when their mind was taken over by the "frenzy".

Many of the remaining viable destinations for a player like Kadri to get his big payday are places unlikely to be playoff caliber for several seasons. Calgary could pay him but didn't he reject a trade to there? Detroit maybe? Add Kadri to Detroit and I'm thinking they're getting close to playoff caliber soon if they get the goaltending. Maybe the Dallas Stars?

It would actually be possible to do a Nylander for Tkachuk trade, which I think could make sense for both teams. Assuming Kerfoot and Holl get traded in separate deals. Hopefully Tkachuk would sign a 2 year deal at 9.5M instead of walking after one year, otherwise probably couldn’t pull the trigger. Also assume Sandin comes in under $1.4M then it could work.

Tkachuk Matthews Marner
Robertson Tavares Bunting
Engvall Kampf Jarnkrok
Aube-Kubel Gaudette Simmonds

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Lily
Gio Benn
Sandin

Murray
Samsonov

After the year Tkachuk just had I don't know how trading him for Nylander makes any sense for Calgary

I susoect Tkachuk is set on gaining free ability to sign wherever he wants as quickly as possible. Not sure he'd be interested in any sign and trade scenario beyond the 1 year arbitration contract.

Slightly off topic but I can't come up with a single reason why a team and a player shouldn't be allowed to sign an extension 2, 3, 4 years ahead of the expiration of the current deal.

I would guess because each deal has a different cap hit, and they don't want teams manipulating the system. For example signing guys to 3 year contract at a smaller hit and then extending fairly quickly to another deal with a bigger cap hit to try to get savings in early years. You sign a 3 year deal you have to wait 2 years to get another one. Of course that's too risky for the best players so they just sign the market value 7 or 8 year deal as intended.

This whole PLD situation is a complete mess. Why on earth would his camp come out and say that he only wants to play for the Habs? Is it a tactic to squeeze every dollar out of the Jets?

If I'm the Habs, I'm not improving on the original rejected offer. I'll take my chances and potentially sign him in a couple of years, or perhaps revisit this idea in a year.

Highly doubt anyone will offer sheet him

Don't think it's any more complicated than he wants out of Winnipeg as quickly as possible and has his heart set on a specific destination. Some players are just getting bolder at asserting those preferences publicity to pressure teams.

In fairness, Kadri nixing that trade to Calgary might have been more about not wanting to leave Toronto than it was about rejecting the Flames. I'm not necessarily intending to suggest that he will end up there now though.

Calgary won't have cap space for Kadri assuming they re-sign their RFA's (Tkachuk 10M, Mangiapane 5.5M, Kylington 3.5M) unless Monahan goes on LTIR. As you said - he has already blocked a trade there.

Detroit has their 1/2C for the future in Larkin/Kasper. Kadri will also be 35 by the time they are competing.

Dallas can't afford him once they re-sign Roberton and Oettinger.

I truly think he goes back to Colorado at 6M.

I know but the Leafs have everyone signed for two more years and while I don’t believe in the doomsday clock, it’s fairly apparent they have about two years left with almost all the core signed for that length. So maybe he can get paid a very handsome contract for two years to play with his friends (Matthews and Marner) and get a monster contract in two years when the cap rises

So as I said, we move him because we want to get Sandin ice time. We are not moving him to save cap or to trade a guy before his contract expires. Teams don't do that unless they have to.
We're trading him because there are better options and I don't get the fascination with Holl.

Remarkable how stagnant signings and trades are right now.

Need something to happen. Some bigger names need to fall to get the rest of the market moving.

Feels like the league collectively said "Let's screw off to Europe for a month and deal with this then"

RD needs more support than LD. I'd rather trade Muzzin and keep Holl as a 7th defender just in case. Holl is probably the type of guy we trade for at the deadline anyways.

Rielly Brodie
Giordano Liljegren
Sandin Subban
Benn Holl

Sign Sandin, sign a RD, and trade a LD is all we pretty much have to do right now.

There’s an additional team to pull revenue from, viewership numbers are way up and league attendance only dropped about 10% since pre-Covid, you’d think the owners would add a little more than a mil to the cap.

But then notice the people who got way richer in the last two years, they don’t care about you or your job.

Anyone else starting to think that Kadri is starting to cost himself money every second he doesn’t sign? Teams have loaded up and don’t want to move assets out, and comparables emerge, how is he gonna get 8 when Gaudreau gets 9.7 and Tkachuck gets awarded ~9?
Everything you said is 100 percent right

IF you can get a full season out of Muzzin, there's no chance that you trade him. You see his level of importance when it comes to stabilizing play. That's the biggest question mark though. You don't know if you can get a full season out of him. They'll obviously keep in touch with him and have all is medicals. But they need to make a smart decision.

Otherwise, you need an entire new 2nd pair.

I don't think you keep Holl as the 7th dman. I think that you keep Jordie Benn as the 7th dman.
