EH projects Joseph at 2.33Mx3, Formenton at 1.7Mx2 and Brannstrom at 2.26Mx2. They'd be best off to let Brannstrom walk rather than pay him over 1.5M because he'll never play in their top 4. For the 2 forwards they should probably bridge them until Zaitsev/Hamonic/Talbot are off the books.

I mean they have the capspace now so they don't really need to bridge. You're right that seems a bit rich for Brannstrom but then again i'm not sure they're ready to walk.

If we're trading Sandin it has to be to accelerate his development to a top 4 D. I dunno about you guys but that backend is starting to look old and weak to me. No amount of xGA going to convince me our backend is good. I blame our backend the most for our playoff loss, so soft. Even Maroon just prances in and bangs it home in slow motion.

Our no.1 doesn't even know what defence is anymore, we are in no position to use our best trade assets for forwards.

They need to save room for Stutzle (7M?), Debrincat (3M?), and Zub's (2M?) raises next year. In 2 years they get 4.1M in relief from their buyout ledger, 1.6M from Murray expiring, and 4.5M from Zaitsev that they can use for Sanderson and Joseph/Formenton.

whoa sounds like cap hell!

Norris is great and all but that seems rich
Ya agreed. Though if the league gets that massive cap bump in like 2 or 3 years it will be pretty good. 35 goals in 60 something games is pretty amazing for a 23 year old so I get why they took that risk

I like Blackwell too as a guy who might thrive here but Samsonov is in the same category IMO.

Murray has his injury concerns for sure but the two cups and the fact he had a real good Dec. to Feb. (before a couple of a rough outings and injury to close out the year)

Top 5 goalies from Dec.-Feb. last season in the NHL (min 10 games played)
1. Shesterkin: .947
2. Swayman: .944
3. Husso: .935
4. Murray: .932
5. Andersen: .931

...while playing behind, by far, the most trash D of the bunch.

The Leafs are probably the best defensive team he has been on since, maybe ever. Let's see if he takes the reins and I think the concussion injuries are the major concern (and buried by LTIR if he gets a major one right?).
Hey it can turn out to be great but still not very impressed.

That's what happens when you overpay your top players.
Or thats what happens when you sign all your top players just before covid puts you into a 3-4 year flat cap.
like seriously it was just bad timing. Leafs basically never got any extra cap back each year the cap rises which makes the high % of your cap signing become less. in that time it cap hasn't gone up. hindsight is 20/20 Im sure if MLSE and Dubas knew we were in for a flat cap Tavares would have been avoided. but thats now how it worked out

Better contract for Ryan, better team for Dylan. Of course, that situation could also bode well for the latter's next deal.

Sounds like prices are going down to me. Leafs might be able to get one or two really good depth forwards.

I'm also glad Kerfoot is still around at 3.5M because I prefer him over Strome.

poop.

didn't quite come down into the price range i wanted - on a one year deal i thought he might take a mil or so less to play at home with some elite lineamtes.

If you get a chance listen to Frank Corrado on Overdrive on Tuesday after the trade (it may have been Monday. He talks about playing against Pittsburgh and for Pittsburgh when they won their cups and he talked about what they did defensively that allowed Murray to thrive. Basically he said the pens crashed towards the middle and only let shots in from the outside, similar to TB the past few years. He said he was worried that even if Murray is a better goalie than he was in Ottawa he wouldn't fare as well he did in Pittsburgh due to a different defensive structure.

Murray badly outplayed Fleury behind that same D and stole his starting job as a rookie and won a cup with a decimated D anchored by Ron Hainsey. Injuries have hurt him (like Andersen) as much as anything.

The Andersen to Carolina and Murray to Toronto contrast has really opened my eyes to just how toxicly negative the Toronto press is to its own team. I thought it was bad but jeez.

Toronto's D has nothing to do with all the softies or flubbed point shots our keepers let in the last half of the season. Toronto was top ten in every relevent defensive stat inckuding a top 5 xGA/60 and had the 3rd lowest goals against in the league before the goaltending issues (and injuries were an issue here) reared their head. We all watched it happen......all except thr brilliant Mr. C I guess.

It's just sad that's what we have come to hope for.

That's the remaining UFAs on day 5 will be desperate enough to sign with us. Ugh.

Lankinen went to NSH, so that is pretty much it for NHL caliber goalies on the UFA market assuming Holtby retires.

Cory Schneider still looks like a solid #3 though.

RD market keeps getting thinner though. At this point, it may be worth re-signing Duszak for another year. An offensive defenseman is not exactly what the Marlies need, but if I am taking one, I would rather have one that put up almost a PPG and still looked like a solid defender in his own end. I do not have faith in Rindell, Villeneuve or Hollowell being top 4 caliber RD at the AHL level.

We have Lily and Niemela coming through. I'd prefer to have another D that has top pairing potential, however I don't think Sandin is that guy. I'd trade Nylander to get that future top D and trade Sandin to find a RW that plays better with Tavares.

I think he would've, but I don't think the Leafs have cap for him even at 2.5M because it seems they don't want to move Kerfoot or Holl
