Sandin for Hayton makes a lot of sense. Similar to how Mrazek to Chicago made a lot of sense. Matthews - Tavares - Hayton - Kampf down the middle would be nice.

How much are you expecting those RFA's to come in at?

I dunno. Guess they could bridge them all at $1.5m at the low end? Though maybe Formenton would need a little more? But in there situation they'd probably want to give them more term at a higher price point?

EH projects Joseph at 2.33Mx3, Formenton at 1.7Mx2 and Brannstrom at 2.26Mx2. They'd be best off to let Brannstrom walk rather than pay him over 1.5M because he'll never play in their top 4. For the 2 forwards they should probably bridge them until Zaitsev/Hamonic/Talbot are off the books.

sean durzi would look so good on this team right now. what a shyt trade that was. dubas got levereged again.

I know the team hasn’t been successful in the playoffs and this year was tough one for Muzzin. He has been solid and great for us so i think the trade worked out well for both teams. You gotta give to get.

Sens just gave $8m to Norris (good deal), which takes them up over $70m.

With RFA deals still to come for Formenton, Joseph, and Brannstrom - looks like they're going to be nearly a cap team this year.

RIP Melnyk

I want to see that team implode so bad.

Muzzin has been an important defenseman for the Leafs over the same period.

The right side currently has Brodie, Liljegren, and Holl. The Leafs don't require an offensive defenseman for the third pairing, which is why Dubas himself wants to add a physical RHD.

It's also important to credit the Kings for their development work. At the time of the trade, Durzi was a long shot to make the NHL (more people were sad about losing Grundstrom) but they put in a good amount of time working on his skill set allowing him to do well in his role.

I like Blackwell too as a guy who might thrive here but Samsonov is in the same category IMO.

Murray has his injury concerns for sure but the two cups and the fact he had a real good Dec. to Feb. (before a couple of a rough outings and injury to close out the year)

Top 5 goalies from Dec.-Feb. last season in the NHL (min 10 games played)
1. Shesterkin: .947
2. Swayman: .944
3. Husso: .935
4. Murray: .932
5. Andersen: .931

...while playing behind, by far, the most trash D of the bunch.

The Leafs are probably the best defensive team he has been on since, maybe ever. Let's see if he takes the reins and I think the concussion injuries are the major concern (and buried by LTIR if he gets a major one right?).
Rebuttal

Why only such small sample window to build up Murray? Any NHL goalie is capable of a hot streak over a small span.

Sens claimed Anton Forsberg on waivers from CBJ originally and got 2021-22 .. 44 games 22-17-4 record with 2.82 GAA and .917 sv% & 8.5 goals saved above expected (16th best overall).

"...while playing behind, by far, the most trash D of the bunch".

We're talking a 44 games sample size (not 10 games) on the same Sens team and same Sens defense and those are all respectable #'s compared to Jack Campbell 49 games 31-9-6 record 2.64 GAA & .914 sv% and -2.3 goals saved above expected (68th)

"The Leafs are probably the best defensive team he has been on since, maybe ever".

Maybe Leafs got the wrong Sens goalie because Forsberg on a much weaker team produced stats > = to Jack Campbell on a "stronger" defensive team?

Forsberg age 29 with 3 years at $2.75 mil Cap left.

Every year I want to sign this guy, but we never do. You'd think a GM who never carries a 23-man roster would love a utility player that plays both forward and defense.
The player also has to want to come here, and we currently cannot guarantee a spot higher than 4D/4RW in the lineup.

If you get a chance listen to Frank Corrado on Overdrive on Tuesday after the trade (it may have been Monday. He talks about playing against Pittsburgh and for Pittsburgh when they won their cups and he talked about what they did defensively that allowed Murray to thrive. Basically he said the pens crashed towards the middle and only let shots in from the outside, similar to TB the past few years. He said he was worried that even if Murray is a better goalie than he was in Ottawa he wouldn't fare as well he did in Pittsburgh due to a different defensive structure.
