So far the Stepan trade looks like (when factoring the cap space saved):
Stepan and Raanta for Shattenkirk, DeAngelo, Pavelec and Andersson.
Eliminate Pavelec...and you got it right.

If they have cap space AV could keep 8 d on the roster
I'd love to move Staal but doesn't the no trade become limited next year ?
Holden can also play both sides so that's useful
BBBkers, about that cap space. I'm assuming that doesn't include Klein. Him retiring gives us bit of wiggle room.
I imagine we'll sign one player cheap for the 3s/4s and acquire another through trade. Probably save the bulk of that cap space for next season. The buyout cap hit for Marc Staal is $2,133,333. His cap hit is $5,700,000 so the actual savings are $3,566,667. We have $7,425,556 in space now. Need 2 more forwards (and a Fast replacement to begin with) plus new contracts for Zib and Fast. After a Staal buyout we would have $11 M in space - ~ $7,2 M for resigning the RFAs leaves about $3 M for two players. Need around $800.000 to operate the team in. Is Andersson one of them on an ELC? Grigorenko?
Sorry. My numbers do not include Kleins salary. So we have more space. My bad
I stand corrected. We have $11,325,556 in cap space right now with Beargloves on the roster, Klein retiring and the two RFAs unsigned. If we buyout Staal we have a lot of money to play around with.
The Rangers will get a 2nd buyout in late July/early August.
Marc Staal
If you buy Staal out this summer or next June, there is not much difference with the money. Two more seasons if the buyout is completed this summer.
It's sad in a way--2 serious head injuries and a good player hits the road of decline. Like Girardi he's given a lot for the team....but his injuries and the development of other D make him a roadblock to progress right now.
If Staal isn't at least our 6th best D there's no point in carrying him and especially with the cap hit he has. And I don't think he's very tradeable and I wouldn't dick around very much trying to find him a new home. Going forward the best thing for the team is to buy him out and get whatever cap savings you can and you might as well do it right ****ing now. To me when Shattenkirk signed his name on the dotted line yesterday Staal lost his spot on the team. You can't have Staal in the way of younger, healthier guys who are ready to replace him right now.
If you add the money to Zibanejad and Fast, the Rangers need to add four more forwards. The Rangers have 7 forwards(including Puempel) under contract. 13 forwards and 7 D. The Rangers don't have a young forward from the AHL to make the club. The two group II's come in between $6.5-$7M. It depends on term. How much is left over to add 4-5 forwards and have space to operate the team during the season?

Klein retires--buy out Staal. Sign Zib and Fast and the Rangers should have about $5.5 mil to work with (depending mostly on the contract we give to Zib) out of which we'll need to add at least two forwards. That's very workable.
7?
Nash, Miller, Hayes, Grabner, Puempel, Zucca, Vesey, Buch, Kreider. That's 9. Ziba and Fast makes it 11.
If Staal is bought out we have almost 15 million.
One million to operate the team
7,5 million max to Fast and Zib
6,5 M to spend
Watch us do this:
4,5 M to Jumbo Joe
2 M to Grigorenko
Max 1,5 M to Tkechov if he impresses in camp (he can replace Fast on LTIR)
Sign Klingberg
9 forwards signed
Miller
Kreider
Vesey
Nash
Zucc
Buch
Hayes
Grabner
Puempel
Need at least two more forwards--one of them anyway a center. And Nash gets moved either at the trade deadline depending or comes off the books next summer.......and to be honest with you the only way I contemplate bringing him back ( and for a much reduced cap hit) is if the Rangers win the Stanley Cup and I don't see that happening. If we're retooling on the fly and cutting ties with the old guard who haven't quite been able to get the job done we need to do it across the board.
