From the look of it, either buying out Staal or not, this team would have room to add Kruger. He'd be a nice depth center for AV to use in that Boyle/Moore role.
Thornton signed yesterday with SJ to a one yet deal I believe.
Buying out Staal seems like a good idea for this season but the length of the buyout is horrendous. I'm on my phone but can someone calculate the collective dead cap space both Girardi and Staal would hit the team with if both were bought out this offseason?
If Staal is bought out we have almost 15 million.
One million to operate the team
7,5 million max to Fast and Zib
6,5 M to spend
Watch us do this:
4,5 M to Jumbo Joe
2 M to Grigorenko
Max 1,5 M to Tkechov if he impresses in camp (he can replace Fast on LTIR)
Sign Klingberg
Yeah for like $6M or something I thought.
Thornton's re-signed with the Sharks and it was for $6.5. Klingberg--I have no interest.
Grigorenko would be a good project. Tkachyov (sp?)--would very much like to see us sign him. Looking at what's left on the free agent market if it's short term/low cost I wouldn't mind adding a gritty guy who can play like Ryan White. Vande Velde comes to mind--he's a center and kills penalties--scores a little and would be cheap. Alex Chiasson?
For this season?
If Beargloves and DeAngelo slot in they will cost around $1,8 M combined the next two years. The buyout costs 4,7 M. Actual savings amount to $4,7 M per year the next two seasons.Yes if Staal is bought out too the combined amount of "dead" cap space is a bit under $5MM. Girardi is $2.6 and Staal is $2.1MM.

What about 2018 and so on?
If you can be bothered calculating.

Going by Cap Friendly if we bought out Staal now:
17-18 G (2611) + S (2133) = 4744
18-19 G (3611) + S (2133) = 5744
19-20 G (3611) + S (3133) = 6744
20-21 G (1111) + S (3933) = 5044
21-22 G (1111) + S (1433) = 2544
22-23 G (1111) + S (1433) = 2544
23-24 S (1433)
24-25 S (1433)
If we buy Staal out next summer between Staal and Girardi:
17-18 2611
18-19 5667
19-20 6667
20-21 4967
21-22 2467
22-23 2467
23-24 1356
The loss of cap space from buying out Staal this year to next year is almost negligible in the worst years 18-19, 19-20 and 20-21.
Thanks for doing this. This is exactly what I was looking for.
2018-2021 is going to be difficult for this team.
I'm less concerned with this seasons dead cap number as I am the future. When some of these young players need their 2nd and 3rd deals.
There's no way the Rangers can keep carrying Staal--not if they believe they have more than two NHL players out of DeAngelo, Bereglazov, Graves and Pionk--and I'm thinking they might have 4. Might as well bite the bullet and get it over with IMO.
Problem will be in the 2019-20 season when the replacement players (presumed to be DeAngelo and Bear Gloves) will be coming off their ELCs.
Remember though Girardi and Staals combined cap hit that year is something like $11.2MM. Buyout cost would be the $6.7MM and unless they both become superstars their second contracts should still be less or at the worst about the same as to what the combined Staal/Girardi contracts sold be if they were still playing.
Rangers are still better off buying them both out, even with the worst case season in 2019-20.

Here you are, Sir...What about 2018 and so on?

Exactly my thoughts as well. Buch is that year as well I believe?
