OK, OK ..McD has the edge through experience but Skjei not only matched his #'s but also had a better playoffs in only his first season.
Something special going on with this kid for sure.

and if you compare McDonagh's first good year heere he destroys skjei in every way.

Now you can drop the hard on for skjei and try to use something better than "well he did this and that and by the logic of me myself and I, skjei is better than such and such.

It's getting close but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Skjei had the better playoffs

Sure, Skjei had a good playoffs, but he was playing 2nd and evne 3rd pair minutes. Don't take McDonagh for granted. McDonagh is a bonafide 1D in this league and by far the best D on this team.

Watching you guys argue with Ola, an actual professional hockey player and coach, is really amusing.

The question I have for you is whether or not you think Girardi was ever a good or even decent player? I think he was. He even made an all star game, which admittedly was a pretty weak appointment.

Girardi was a good player in Torts system. We all know he can block shots. He's also a good positional player. He's good on the boards, very physical, and knows how to defend a two on one. He's also got an underrated shot, not necessarily from the point, but he's buried many a chance with nice wristers from the slot, a few in very clutch situations.

The guy has slowed. That doesn't bode well moving forward, particularly for a guy that was slow to begin with. He's an absolute awful component of AV's system, a mismatch made in hell. He can still do most of the above reasonably well though, and if deployed correctly, can be a positive presence.

Regardless, I still can't believe he got the contract he did. I assume there was competition, which means more than just Stevey Y sees something in him.

I think he was a decent/good player who was always overused, when he started losing his legs (and got used even higher up) he became a complete liability.

Girardi IMO was always better offensively then defensively, but because he was tough he got typecast in a role and noone ever thought about it more.

The thing that always stood out to me as his best asset was his ability to pinch in the OZone and keep a play alive, he was very good at that, even going down low.

Also about the Ola thing, i don't care if he's the best coach/player combo to ever live, i still think he's wrong here and i'll argue my point any day.

LOL at Skjei being even close to McDonagh or even Shattenkirk.

He had an amazing rookie season and he's got potential to keep growing but honestly, he was not great defensively last season, something he needs to work on.

He did however show much much better offensive instincts then i think anyone believed he had, so that's definitely a plus.

Hitting the sack in a few minutes and so to recap the past 10 days or so this is pretty much what JG did for us unless I'm missing something:

-We bought and gave up Dan Girardi, traded Derek Stepan and Anti Raanta while gaining $6.5 in salary cap space.

-We got back Anthony DeAngelo, Lias Andersson, Ondrej Pavelec and Kevin Shattenkirk while gaining 6.5 in salary cap space which helped obviously in signing Shatty.

Overall grade for JG you have to give Gorton an A-.....sound right fellas?

Only reason it's not an A+ is cause we now have a pretty significant hole at the center position.

Plenty of time to rectify this situation tho. Heck of a day today. Now we can chill a bit assess the roster and other teams rosters and you have to think sometime within the next 6 weeks or so as I mentioned earlier, JG will get down and dirty and address the center position issue.

You have to think JG will be sniffing around the Duchene's, Galyunchuck's of the world and see what it truly would take to acquire either of the two. Or maybe he'll go out and acquire an available wing that we don't know about and he'll tell AV, we are going to go with JTM as one of our centers.

No matter what way we go about this, this has been a memorable and very successful day. I for one we'll head to sleep in a very good mood.

Heck of a past few days to be a Ranger fan as the re-signing of Smitty and the signing of Shatty pretty much guarantees ourselves that our Rangers will once again have a fun, exciting and successful regular season and be pretty much a lock to be a playoff team for 12th time in 13 years, we should also have as good a chance as any to represent the East in the Cup finals. Good times my friends....good times....nite nite....

Gorton must clean up the blueline. Nothing has changed, we are still not looking like a top cup contender. Still, we have a very old blueline:
Staal 30 y/o
Holden 30 y/o
McD 28 y/o
Smith 28 y/o
Shattenkirk 28 y/o
Skjei and DeAngelo 22-23

That is of course very unsatisfactory. It won't take many years, and definitely cover the years we are supposed to contend in, before we will have a real dinosaur crew on the blueline. The time to get in at least one more young D from within on the blueline is definitely now.

One of Staal or Holden will be dealt before the season
Bear will likely be in
The McD situation will also be very interesting in one year

Gorton must clean up the blueline. Nothing has changed, we are still not looking like a top cup contender. Still, we have a very old blueline:
Staal 30 y/o
Holden 30 y/o
McD 28 y/o
Smith 28 y/o
Shattenkirk 28 y/o
Skjei and DeAngelo 22-23

That is of course very unsatisfactory. It won't take many years, and definitely cover the years we are supposed to contend in, before we will have a real dinosaur crew on the blueline. The time to get in at least one more young D from within on the blueline is definitely now.

28 is NOT old for a dman. Holy ****ing ****, I know this is hockeysFUTURE but this is just crazy. And Holden and Staal are spares, tradebait or buyout candidates. Also, Bereglazov is 23 and has been brought over to compete for a spot, not go down to Hartford.

We have 4 RFAs left to sign:
Zib
Fast
Jensen
Catenacci

Gotta think we are still bringing in 1-2 forwards and that one D is going out (Staal or Holden). Fast and Zib will eat up all our remaining cap space. We now need someone dealt to ice a full roster. If it is Staal that goes (without too much retention) then Gorton has been brilliant. We could then perhaps sign another center or two (JT and Grigorenko??).
Maybe we also sign Tkachev and/or Klingberg. There is an unsigned NCAA D that might be of interest as well.

I think i've decided now, we really should sign Jokinen, he fits sooo well to what we need. He drives possession and he's versatile as bleep.

Try Miller at C and give both Miller and Hayes a really good possession driver or two on their line. If Miller can't handle being C then try Jokinen there.
Between the two of them we should have a decent 3C, otherwise you trade for one.

Kreider-Zbad-Buch
Nash-Miller/Hayes-Zuke
Jokinen-Hayes/Miller-Fast/Vesey
Grabner-<insert 4C here>-Vesey/Fast

I think that looks really good, think i'd prefer Fast on the 3rd over Vesey just because he's such a good shot suppressor, helps insulate Hayes/Miller.

Also, Grabner+Vesey should be pretty fun on the 4th line.

Given how our D looks i think this F group is more then sufficient to do good things.

Edit: This would also help protect Hayes if AV keeps feeding him defensive usage, having Jokinen-Fast as your wingers over Grabner-Miller sure could do wonders for Hayes overall game, maybe he could even handle the defensive usage then?

I really think this is the best course of action right now.

I wouldn't be surprised if Skjei has a sophomore slump. Lets hope not but these things do happen.

The Rangers will get a 2nd buyout in late July/early August.

Marc Staal

If you buy Staal out this summer or next June, there is not much difference with the money. Two more seasons if the buyout is completed this summer.

If the Rangers do buyout or are able to trade Staal, man the face of this team has had an almost complete change sans Lundqvist And McD.

Gorton said the core needed a shakeup and that's what he did.

If you buy him out this summer, we will have taken away all of AVs toys and will have a great defense that's even AV-proof. And we get a little bit of cap space.

Buying out Staal would give the Rangers an additional $3.6MM in cap space this year and next.

If they have cap space AV could keep 8 d on the roster

I'd love to move Staal but doesn't the no trade become limited next year ?

Holden can also play both sides so that's useful

I think you misunderstood me, a kid from within should play in NHL this season. I would definitely prefer Bereglazov. 4 of 6 guys on our blueline shouldn't be vets around 30 at this point. Pionk looks like a pretty interesting kid. DeAngelo should of course play.

Where is the room for these guys?

Staal is a spare/traidbait? He makes just south of 6m for many more years and has a NMC until next season. Buying him out is a huge hit for sure.

Holden played very good hockey for the first 2/3 of last season. It's not easy for a kid to bump him. I've followed this team closely at least the last 20 camps, it happens but vets like that aren't just bumped that easily in the end.

Would Gorton have resigned Smith if he knew Shatty would leave up towards 20m on the table and sign with us?

Our blueline is not old if we are going for it this and next season. But if you think that it looks pretty tough for us to compete in the coming year or two, but that we still have a good young core that -- if a piece or two fall into place the coming years -- might gear up in 2-4 years time -- there is a lot of vets on that top 7, no doubt. Would make more sense IMO to work in guys like Bereglazov, really let DeAngelo establish himself, and give guys like Graves and Pionk at least a hypothetical shot at ever getting a chance to play. At least in my opionon.

According to Cap Friendly he has NMC throughout the contract.

If they move Staal via trade or buyout id like to see Holden kept as the #7.

So far the Stepan trade looks like (when factoring the cap space saved):

Stepan and Raanta for Shattenkirk, DeAngelo, Pavelec and Andersson.

People keep talking about trading Staal, but neglect the elephant in the room...his clause. It's not an NTC with a list of teams he'll accept a trade to; nevermind that...it's not even an NTC at all. It's a big, fat, smelly, full NMC.

I get tired of reminding people of this....
