As glorious of a day as it was today, I was disappointed about three things:

1. I would have liked us to have gotten Anders Nilsson as our backup goalie. On other hand, I wouldn't have been willing to pay 2.5 per that Vancouver did and so JG did the right thing and walked away.

2. I would have like us to have gotten Brian Boyle to fill a 4th line role and be one of our key PK players and our main face off guy. I wouldn't have been willing as well to pay 2.5 x 2 for him like Jersey did and so JG did the right thing as well and walked away.

3. Finally, after Bonino and Hanzel priced themselves out of our market, I would have liked us to have gotten Sam Gagner to be one of our top 3 centers. He would have been a sweet addition. But tho I would have been willing to go to $3.0 x 3, I wouldn't have been willing to go to $3.3 x 3 like Vancouver did and so JG did the right thing as well and walked away.

So even tho JG did the right thing for sure walking away, I'm still a bit dissapointed we couldn't get these three players as all of them would have been tremendous additions....oh well....

You really believe this?

So hypothetically, if Smitty plays as well as he did once he got acclimated with the team by end of regular season and especially in the playoffs, you think there is going to be regret here in Ranger land both with management and the fan base?

My opinion, if Smith even plays like 90% of the guy we saw in the playoffs, most of us will be more than happy with him being in a top 4 role.

Wondering why you are so down on Smith as it's not points or goals scored where Smith makes his true impact as it's more in his toughness, grit and defensive play.

No NTC for Girardi. NTC for Smith. Girardi at 3 AAV, Smith at 4.35 AAV. Girardi at 2 years, Smith for 4.

Point: TB can ditch this contract, or buy it out without a blip. We cannot. Smith is a Ranger for four years, better or worse. Hes only played a handful of games for us, and hasn't shown that he can be top-4 on a cup winning squad. That's here or elsewhere.

When we got Klein, people raved about the $ and term, said he'd be a top-4, that he doesn't have to put up points, but brings "other aspects". He was a top four for maybe part of one season, and that was with Girardi and Staal.

We will live to regret this contract. We overpaid to have not given up the picks for nothing.

Nash is in a walk year. He's going to show up to cash in on a final retirement contract.

Bank on it.

Rangers would be better off keeping Nash this year.

Staal hasn't showed up in game shape and in every game since 2014. He's been training hard this off-season. Maybe there's some pride left in him. Maybe he's willing to dog it.

But getting a guy like Haula (Vegas isn't trading him)... would do wonders for the Rangers depth wise. Haula is the perfect 3rd/4th line center for this team.

Faksa would be amazing for this team. He's a pest and a checker.

Devin Shore isn't a bad option.

I'd sign up for a Staal for Bozak deal even.

Athanasiou would be an identity defining player.

Methinks the Rangers go for pure speed & hustle on that 4th line with a bunch of 25 point players.

Zach Smith would be great. Jarnkork too.

But I just don't see the dance partners lining up for the Rangers tradeable assets now.

need to build still
move Nash for assets

At this term? I have zero problem with this signing at all.

I never for one second believed that he wanted to play here THIS badly. I commend him for doing what he did, because its something that athletes never do and if he had taken the money I wouldn't have held it against him.

Dude is already a legend in my book, but I really hope that people aren't expecting him to come in and be that missing piece.

Cool GG. That has been the narrative from most peeps who originally either didn't want Shatty or thought we'd never get him.

I think we all read and heard about Shatty wanting to come here but not as badly as it evidently was. Virtually impossible for anyone to predict a player is going to leave about $20 million on the table and for 2-3 less years all in order to play for his favorite team since he was a kid.

Shatty has also earned enormous respect in my mind as well as anyone who would do what he did besides leaving all that money on table but taking on the pressure cooker of NY as well, is a rare athlete indeed.

Let's keep this in mind as well tho. Shatty isn't stupid. He knows that if somehow the Rangers win a Cup during these 4 years or if they don't and he performs well, he's still going to be only 31-32 and he'll be in line for one more huge contract whether it be an extension by us or as a UFA and so he'll get paid alot more than what he signed for today with us.

Oh and as far as him being the "missing piece". I don't think most of us think that. But he is in integral piece and a player that fills a huge void we have had for awhile which has been a true PP QB who can shoot from the right side. If we end up doing some big things going forward, Shatty is very likely going to be one of the main reasons.

I find it a bit humorous with all this talk of such great contacts for Smith and Shattenkirk and yet the teams best defenseman only makes $832k ;)

If we can't find a top-six center via trade, I hope we sign Grigorenko as a 3C.

Kreider - Zibanejad - Buchnevich
Vesey - Hayes - Nash
Miller - Grigorenko - Zuccarello
Grabner - Andersson - Fast

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Bereglazov - DeAngelo

Lundqvist
Pavelec

I feel very confident that team is a Stanley cup contender

OK, OK ..McD has the edge through experience but Skjei not only matched his #'s but also had a better playoffs in only his first season.
Something special going on with this kid for sure.

How about a guy like Jagr to play with Miller? Jagr is a playmaker on the wing which could allow Miller to move back to center but focus on defense and going to the net. Jagr could lighten the load a bit. I know Jagr doesn't skate very fast any more but he thinks fast.
Just an idea. Would love to see Jagr go out with the Rangers and I think he still has some gas in the tank.

McDonagh was attached to a 212 lb anchor for most of the season.

Jagr's fine in the regular season because no one wants to hit a living legend and potentially end his career, but when the playoffs start he's terrible, and so are Miller and Hayes, so if the goal is to win something, I don't want anything to do with Jagr

Hitting the sack in a few minutes and so to recap the past 10 days or so this is pretty much what JG did for us unless I'm missing something:

-We bought and gave up Dan Girardi, traded Derek Stepan and Anti Raanta while gaining $6.5 in salary cap space.

-We got back Anthony DeAngelo, Lias Andersson, Ondrej Pavelec and Kevin Shattenkirk while gaining 6.5 in salary cap space which helped obviously in signing Shatty.

Overall grade for JG you have to give Gorton an A-.....sound right fellas?

Only reason it's not an A+ is cause we now have a pretty significant hole at the center position.

Plenty of time to rectify this situation tho. Heck of a day today. Now we can chill a bit assess the roster and other teams rosters and you have to think sometime within the next 6 weeks or so as I mentioned earlier, JG will get down and dirty and address the center position issue.

You have to think JG will be sniffing around the Duchene's, Galyunchuck's of the world and see what it truly would take to acquire either of the two. Or maybe he'll go out and acquire an available wing that we don't know about and he'll tell AV, we are going to go with JTM as one of our centers.

No matter what way we go about this, this has been a memorable and very successful day. I for one we'll head to sleep in a very good mood.

Heck of a past few days to be a Ranger fan as the re-signing of Smitty and the signing of Shatty pretty much guarantees ourselves that our Rangers will once again have a fun, exciting and successful regular season and be pretty much a lock to be a playoff team for 12th time in 13 years, we should also have as good a chance as any to represent the East in the Cup finals. Good times my friends....good times....nite nite....

If Jagr would take less than $2.0 for 1, I'm with ya and he would be a nice addition. I doubt he would and so he'll likely not be part of the JG plan for us heading into the season.

Hate to break it to you tank guys, but we're not taking.

A top 4 D of:

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith

is a top 4 D that rivals Nashville. This is a cup contending D.

Now we just need to make sure our forward corps can be good enough sans Stepan.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Zuccarello
Miller-Hayes-Buchnevich
Vesey-Andersson-Nash
Grabner-XXX-Fast

That's a fantastic forward group considering Andersson shows he belongs and we can sign a good 4C. Sign a center who can possibly be a 3c or even 2c, someone who can flip flop with Andersson, considering the botton 6 as outlined will be skilled and not a traditional bottom 6. Sign someone like Grigorenko and we are good. I'm excited to see if Andersson can stick because if he can and be a good 3C we are golden.

For the record, nothing would make me happier (now that we signed Shatty) than to sign Jagr to come back. Only issue is we already have so man wingers. Now, if you trade Nash or someone for another C then it opens up a spot for Jagr. I think if you can trade one of our current wingers in a deal for a Center and that opens up a spot on the 3rd line wing, Jagr would be idea to fill that. I would love Jagr back here. Give him 3rd line minutes at 5v5 and then let him run the 2nd PP. Could be amazing.
