Do they?

Hayes and Miller should continue to grow. Zibanejad can kill penalties. Grabner. Fast. Nash. Probably Vesey at some point this year.

I think they do, yes. They are in win now and they have opening for role players. I don't want players that "can" kill penalties I want players that actually do kill penalties. 2015-16, they tried that and it didn't work.

GS and AK my friends...I don't see a way in hell we can get rid of Staal at least at this juncture of the offseason.

That would be beyond phenomenal if JG figured out a way to do that or was able to even find a team that would take him off our hands. I think we need to win and realize Staal is going to be on the team this year. Next year is a different story as we can do what we did to Girardi but for now, Staal is going to be part of the club.

One caveat tho fellas. It is possible...I'm not saying likely but it is possible that now that Staal will be on the 3rd pairing and playing with a DeAngelo,Bearclaws and maybe even Holden, that with much less minutes and him not facing opposing teams best fwds more times than not, that maybe just maybe Staal can be more effective this year than he has been since the unfortunate eye injury which IMO was the beginning of Staal's downward trend.

I guess what I'm saying is and this is ust a thought but Staal may be OK with less minutes and having 4 other dmen on team playing the important minutes...ya think?

Josefsson signed with the Sabres (who have been doing some really interesting stuff under Botteril) but Nestrasil is still available. Liked the kid a lot since he was in Detroit and he'd be a nice replacement for Lindberg.

I'm hoping for he and Grigorenko tomorrow and then one more trade of an established guy we have for a young C.

That's fair. Don't disagree.

I'm sure it'll happen but if it doesn't he really isn't a bad 7th D option either.

Yea, agree... was sarcasm, but I think his value is much greater in a trade right now than being a 7th D for us. Especially after seeing some of the contracts given out today. For example, Girardi got a NEW contract for almost twice as much as he makes for twice as long.

Why trade holden?
Why not hold him as your 7 guy. He can easily slot in for an injury to the left or right side. I know it's a number's game, but there may be more happening in the coming weeks.

The only UFA left that I'm interested in is Mikhail Grigorenko (I don't know if he's been discussed here). I would really love it if we take a flier on him. Immensely talented young player, who wouldn't cost much and who played with terrible talent with the Avalanche.

At best, he comes a 1C. At worse, whatever. It's for a short term and for little money.

I wouldn't trade him just to trade him... However, I'm a little scared as hell that AV would put him and Staal together even with Smith back and Shattenkirk here..

However, if you need the cap, he's one to be moved easily

Maybe now you are correct in that "dance partners" are not lining up. However, usually the way it works is once FA frenzy day is over and all the UFA's are taken care of, teams usually go back to their HQ's and assess where they are at heading into camp.

Rangers have plenty of time to wait things out and once a team or two realizes that they are short a dman or two or have some extra assets in the middle(ie...the Wild), that's when deals start to get consumated.

So it would not surprise me in the least if JG sits back for a month or so and let's things play out and than maybe around middle to late August, starts to put some real feelers out there. We are in an excellent spot and I trust JG will do the right things in the coming months to fill our center void whether its from within or via a trade.

I agree, I think the formula is going to be speed and 4 line depth. With teh 4th line being a line that moves the puck from the D-Zone to the O-Zone.

Having top 6 match-up line.

Freeing up O-Zone match-ups for the scoring line.

And the 3rd line that is a mismatch every night.

You can sign the 4th line option at a later date. But the Rangers now have the ability to change their team speed by one trade.

That's Staal/Holden for a two way center that's efficient in 13-15 minutes a night.

To your point, yes, a team is going to be short on D.

That's when you pull the trigger.

Staal + Graves for Bjugstad + Contract is something that I can see helping both teams.

Staal + Graves for Coyle + Crap also works. Rangers just end up with a risky situation of converting a winger back to center.

Buch-Zib-Zucc O-Zone
Kreids-Coyle/Bjug-Nash Top 6 Match Up
Vesey-Hayes-Miller Top 9 mismatch
Grabner-Lias-Fast Speed Possession driving line that exhausts opposition.
McClement insurance

McD-Shatts
Skjei-Smith
Holden/Bear/ADA --- this is where the risk is if these guys aren't ready or reliable... or Shatts can't match up defensively.

But that's a line up that counters with speed and a 5 man attack. Easily a 100 point team if Pavs doesn't **** the bed. Benny better work his magic there.

The Rangers currently have $8,350,556 of available cap space if you include Puempel, Klein and Staal.

That covers 9 signed forwards, 8 defenseman and 2 goalies. They have 2 unsigned RFA's in Zibanejad and Fast.

If Klein retires ($2.9 mil) and the Rangers were to buy out Staal ($3,566,667 in cap savings for the coming season) that would leave them with $14,767,223 to cover Zibanejad's and Fast's new contracts. Let's say Zibanejad at $5 mil (less if it's short term) and Fast at $2.2 along with Bereglazov's $925K (to give us 7D) would leave us $5,717,223 in cap space for two or three forwards to round out the team. Keep Staal and put Berglazov or DeAngelo in Hartford or even move Holden and you're pretty much cutting that $5.7 for two or three forwards in half. Both are doable options but one is better IMO and there's no point in going any further with Staal if he's not one of our 6 best defensemen--is there?

That's fair. Don't disagree.

Yeah I mean, I think they are at the point that I would rather add solid PK role players and hope they elevate their games to contribute otherwise than try to roll the dice on a guy like Grigorenko and hope he can do something, but if he doesn't he can't contribute at all.
