agree still tight,
and does that not mean, playing a game a player short again like opening night?

If no LTIR and a player on IR or sick or nicked up, we’d be definitely short then.
on the 1st one No because Norris is off IR ..
If there is a player on IR then we'd be short

Well they have to do something
Coaching change might get us out of the basement but that roster is going nowhere in the PO
We are losing a 1st rounder in the next three years and we are lining up for a very high pick in this year's draft. Might as well tank hard and hopefully make the playoffs in the next two seasons, where losing the 1st would have the least impact.

Tank the rest of the year, end of the season fire DJ, hire a GM, hire a coach after the playoffs and then make some trades (Stu, Brady and Sandy are the only untouchables).

This team is simply not making the playoffs. Something is broken and it needs more than a patch job.

As soon as playoffs are definitely out of reach we need to get some draft capital for the new GM.

There is still hope though, not yet.

Still not enough money, even if he signs QO.
There wasn’t enough money in October if he signed QO, there still isn’t. If Sens have a player on LTIR there would be room.

LTIR does not accrue any cap space, just temporarily.
ya just shoot Kubalik into the sun. He is a non factor in the grand scheme

You have to consider that if they tank the rest of the season, it is reasonable to expect that players might ask out.

If what they want is to maintain this core, and hit the reset button in the off season, they can't go scorched earth. The fact that they were unwilling to fire Dorion and Smith in-season due to the players requesting more stability, tells me that they want to make it work with the core that they inherited.

It is one thing to trade away the UFAs (Tarasenko, Kubalik, Brannstrom if no QO is intended), but to deliberately tank creates a situation where right or wrong, players might feel ownership folded on them when things went badly. If you have players like Tkachuk and Chabot, who have been here for 6+ years through a never-ending rebuild, and they see ownership fold on them, they may ask out.

That is not me saying that a tank wouldn't be justified. The players failed. But there are multiple stakeholders that ownership and management need to satisfy. The players are one of them. While tanking does help the team accrue assets, with the history of this rebuild and how frustrated the core must be, it would be very risky to do anything that could be viewed as pulling the rug from beneath the players.

You're not getting any real draft capital without restarting the rebuild.

Tarasenko is our best piece, and we will be lucky to get a 2nd for him because of his NMC and the cap. Everybody else are late picks, which we need, but aren't going to change the game.

The only way to get picks is to start another 5-10 year rebuild, which won't happen. Even something like a re-tool is dicey, because if we decide that Sanderson, Stutzle, and Tkachuk are untouchable, but we'd move anybody else for the right package, then there is a risk that the untouchables who are in a position to do so, mainly Tkachuk, might ask out.

Tkachuk's NMC kicks in at the start of the 2025 season. I am not sounding the alarm or anything, but this off season and next year is going to be incredibly important to manage that and ensure he is happy with the new management and the direction of the team. The team cannot go into 2025 with Tkachuk unhappy.

They need to fix this before that 2025 deadline because if this core isn't going to work, they need to get a real legitimate return for Tkachuk, or a different superstar back. It's nearly impossible to both keep a player who is unhappy and to get a strong return for a player whose NMC has kicked in. We have seen it a million times. So even know the Senators wouldn't be obligated to trade him after 2025 if they miss the playoffs again and he asks out, they would have to trade him because it would be a shit-show. Which is what almost always happens in those scenarios.

It's crazy how time flies, but Tkachuk has now been with this team in a never-ending rebuild for 6 seasons. He is one more season away from playing out his RFA years and his NMC activating. There is absolutely no way how someone with Tkachuk blood flowing through their veins is not going to manufacture a trade if the rebuild is proven a failure.

Need to get rid of both goalies and try again

It's not the goalies. The goalies aren't responsible for playing or executing the defensive system on the ice.

They need to decide if this current core is fixable, or if they need to bite the bullet and execute another 5-10 year rebuild with the aim of losing this generation of fans in order to prepare the team to peak when they relocate from Ottawa to Ottawa-Gatineau.

Dorion being in charge of getting another goalie should have been out of the question.

Sent out Gus for Talbot

Spent 25 million and a 2nd for a year of Murray.

Threw another 20 million for 5 years at Korpisalo.

Forsberg for 3 years and 8.5 million

Signed Condon to a 7.5 million dollar deal

60 million spent, on what amounts to 2 guys who were shortly out of the league, and 2 guys who struggle playing 35 games a season.

Not a single guy you want as your starter, outside of 25 year old Gus who they sent out.

The Sens have been horrific at identifying and signing goaltenders for the better part of a decade.

The timing of the sale really, really f***ed the Sens over. Unless you get a legitimate starter, they should not be signed to more than 2 year deals.

The fact the Sens had that bozo in charge for 8 years is absurd.

As for the first point, defensive system is complete trash and our coach is a moron. Agreed on both points.

That being said there were 1 if not 2 very stoppable goals allowed against Vegas and at least 1 against Dallas. Just getting those saves changes the whole game and how the team plays. And when I say very stoppable I don't mean the plays where our team as mental breakdown

It's mind boggling how bad Dorion was at this. Is this the worst management of goaltenders under any GM's tenure? I would guess so lol

Edit: Curious to see how this Korpisalo era ends. Will he finish here and be alright once we have a new coach? Or does he continue to let in soft goals and we end up trading a good asset to dump him?

Easily one of the most disastreous GM tenure of the salary cap era.

Not sure he gets top spot with people like Dubas or Chayka though.

It was a reference to relocating to Lebreton or Downtown, and timing a second rebuild to peak around that. I guess I got too cute with the Ottawa-Gatineau reference.

The thing about it being coaching is that they really have one shot at fixing it next year. If they miss the playoffs again next year, let alone have another embarrassing season, it's over for this core. They can't risk keeping Brady once the NMC kicks in, and if he wants out, then you have to imagine Chychrun and Chabot are both gone and so on.

In a best case scenario, they figure out what the problem is and retool the org' and roster so that this core can win.
