I always wondered if Bowness wasn’t a fan and that’s why we didn’t try harder, because he would’ve known him well from Pittsburgh obviously. Garrioch at the time kind of just said they didn’t want the contract, but if you like the player it’s not a bad contract, so who knows.

I think the reason we didn't get Marino was a combination of two things.
  1. We did not have any budget space, and the cost to dump Zaitsev in the summer was higher. Look at the rumored cost to dump JVR that summer being a 1st round pick.
  2. Dorion wanted Chychrun more. He couldn't add both. Adding Marino would close the door on adding Chychrun.
We know Dorion was in on Chychrun for a long time. We also know that he fixates on star players. He proudly told us how he approached Sakic was back in 2015 or 2016 or something like that about Duchene.

I think not adding a top 4 D in the summer was a budget thing. The price came down on dumping Zaitsev because at the deadline he only had a year left. We also were in the hunt for a playoff spot, so it made giving up a 1st and 3 second round picks to upgrade Zaitsev to Chychrun more appealing because if I recall, rentals were pretty expensive that trade deadline, so he served the double purpose as a rental and someone intended to be a long-term addition.

Somewhat redundant is an understatement lol. They'd have Hamilton, Pesce, Nemec and Marino at RD + Casey in the pipeline and only a year or two away probably. Insane RD depth.

Have to think Marino would be made available if they were to sign Pesce. Not sure what the cost would be though, and if we're trading for Ullmark we won't have much disposable assets left.

Two mid second round picks, or a hockey trade. I could see that type of return. But it's difficult to tell without seeing what teams give up. Given that some of the UFA contracts are going to be aggressive, I could see teams paying high prices for good players like Marino who are cost controlled at a good cap hit for a few years. Look at the talk of Demelo getting 5.3M with term.

I am not saying they are the exact same player, only pointing out that a Marino equivalent is going to be a bigger commitment on the open market or by extending a current player.

So with that in mind, maybe it ends up higher than I initially think, something like a 1st+B prospect type return.

If I were them, I would ask for Batherson. That would be a fair hockey trade - but the Senators can't really do it.

It was quite cool. Alfie was DISGUSTED IIRC. Like, what the f*** are you doing, then basically walked away, because really, what can you say other than man up.
He didn't finish his check and when he got to the bench Alfie gave it to him a bit. Instead of saying Yes Coach, he started to make an excuse...explain whatever it was he was doing. Alfie looked back him like Really? and shooknhis head. It's was a snap shot of how they think, what DJ let them do, what is wrong the team. It's also the same mentality why that kid wanted out of Philly and the other like puke in Winn.

It's plenty evident by their on ice behaviours.

Especially Sanderson in contrast to the rest.

Most of the leading is done on the bench and in the dressing rooms.

Can you clarify how Sanderson exemplifies leadership on the ice more than the others?

Nothing is happening today.
f***. Still not doing anything.

Agreed. However, in his defence, he did come back after hours to do more work.

Rah rah types are the most overrated f***s if they don't follow through with their on ice actions and on ice leadership.

And come on Sanderson is the most composed, doesn't cheat or throw hissy fits because something didn't go his way, is always dialed in and focused, always gives an honest effort defensively even though he has elite offensive talent, could go on and on.

Ahh like the Beaverton,
Difference is those are known as satire.
As the onion argued in it's amicus brief to the supreme court, "Parody Functions By Tricking People Into Thinking That It Is Real". While the onion is known for satire, people often don't realize they are reading the onion until they realize what they are reading is absurd. For parody to work, it has to plausibly
mimic the original.

Anyways, sometimes people get fooled by parody and satire, that doesn't mean it didn't work, in fact, I'd argue if nobody was fooled, it would be just as bad as if everyone were fooled.

League executives told Postmedia on the weekend that Staios is seeking a first-round and second-round pick in exchange for Chychrun or a first-round selection with a high-end prospect.

Kind of conflicts with the Chychrun for Ullmark stuff.

Bruce saying Ullmark wants north of 6 million long-term. That sounds very reasonable.
Depends on what long term is.

6x5 would be great imo, he'd be getting a little long in the tooth by the end, but I can live with that at 6 mil.

but then again, if North mean 6.9 x 5 or 6 x 7 years it becomes tougher to swallow

1. It's not an overpay, Marino is a top 4 D with term.
2. Marino is a defensive defenseman, exactly what we need.
Idk about exactly, we have a big need for someone more abrasive than Marino.

I'd be ok with Marino, but he's a few rungs down from exactly what we need imo.

I'd honestly be shocked if it's less than say, 6.8 mil. He signed for 5 mil per year 3 years ago, since then he's won a Vezina and the cap is will be around 93 mil when the extension will kick in. That's a pretty modest raise IMO.
