I always wondered if Bowness wasn’t a fan and that’s why we didn’t try harder, because he would’ve known him well from Pittsburgh obviously. Garrioch at the time kind of just said they didn’t want the contract, but if you like the player it’s not a bad contract, so who knows.
I think the reason we didn't get Marino was a combination of two things.
- We did not have any budget space, and the cost to dump Zaitsev in the summer was higher. Look at the rumored cost to dump JVR that summer being a 1st round pick.
- Dorion wanted Chychrun more. He couldn't add both. Adding Marino would close the door on adding Chychrun.
I think not adding a top 4 D in the summer was a budget thing. The price came down on dumping Zaitsev because at the deadline he only had a year left. We also were in the hunt for a playoff spot, so it made giving up a 1st and 3 second round picks to upgrade Zaitsev to Chychrun more appealing because if I recall, rentals were pretty expensive that trade deadline, so he served the double purpose as a rental and someone intended to be a long-term addition.
