Let's say you get rid of Tarasenko, Chychrun, Kubalik, buy out Korpisalo, Norris is off the books due to LTIR or buyout.
I guess that frees up about $20 million for next season? Not counting other players getting raises, like Sanderson.
Acquire some assets in terms of draft picks/prospects, sign some UFAs, make a few deals. Aside from asset management, which Dorion sucked ass at, I'm hoping Staois can identify NHL level players that can contribute outside of the top 6/2 and actually increase in value after signing here. So not Hamonic, Hainsey, Dadynov. Sign some guys like Joseph or Demelo that actually improve and become quality depth NHL players. This team would be so much better if Dorion had done that rather that always trotting out bargain bin junk.
The whole FYOUS I think was actually Dorion's objective. It was completely idiotic to put all of your eggs in one basket and empty out all assets because "now is the time to win." You are never going to have a perfect lineup and always need young prospects coming through and flexibility to make trades/signings.
I feel bad for Staois trying to fix this mess. It isn't going to be easy and I give him like a 20% chance of succeeding over the next 2-3 years given what he has to work with. IMO the team needs a short-term and a long-term plan for success. Plan A is to get to the playoffs soon, but you need a contingency plan to restock/retool if that doesn't happen.
It's crazy just how out to lunch Dorion and their plan was. We thought he was bad, but hindsight has re-enforced so much.Let's say you get rid of Tarasenko, Chychrun, Kubalik, buy out Korpisalo, Norris is off the books due to LTIR or buyout.

The fans are going to be merciless over the next few years if things continue on the same track. Personally I'm not expecting miracles and hope the team can start to: get a good coach, asset management, restock prospect pool, make smart trades/UFAs. Everything isn't going to work out perfectly, but unlike Dorion batting .200 I'd hope to see them batting around 6.00 i.e. winning more moves than losing.
"Hey ok we can just tank now"
*Hamonic disappears for weeks after nuking our season*
Truly the most useless player we've ever had. I mean that with all sincerity.
Because Heiskanen is a top 5 D in the league, is very good on the right side, has played it very well for years with Suter on his left, and they have had a ton of success going all the way to the Conference finals with him playing both sides?Wait we slaughtered Dallas last week and they have a guy on their top pair playing their offside. wtf why wasn’t anyone talking about their roster construction
I mean, it looks like neither Korpisalo/Norris will contribute anything to the team next year, Korpi due to being terrible, Norris due to injury. So wouldn't you be better off with cap space, even if to take on bad short term contracts for picks, than having two completely useless players on the books?Buying out both Norris and Korpisalo would be really stupid.
We'd end up sitting on a crap ton of cap space like Nashville did this year because Trotz decided to buyout Duchene for some stupid reason.
Wouldn't be able to spend it all even if we tried. UFA market is far too weak and we don't have the disposable assets to acquire top talent anymore.
That's assuming they ever come back and contribute positively. You frame it like there's no risk to their contracts, which is why the buyouts happen for any team.Buying out both Norris and Korpisalo would be really stupid.

What if Korpisalo keeps tracking at his very poor career numbers, including this year?
What if Norris never gets back to being a consistent player or can stay in the lineup, but isn't able to be put on LTIR?
Well, I'm not throwing all my weight behind them, just arguing they do have merit and deserve consideration.I can understand one of them, but both?
Norris may be able to be bought out at 1/3 of his salary this off-season, but I don't see it happening. He's obviously close with our captain and there are already rumours that Brady isn't happy with how things are going here (obviously).
I'm sure he'd be thrilled seeing his good friend be bought out for a fraction of his salary and kicked off the team because of a nagging injury.
It's far more likely he'll be LTIRetired if his shoulder is permanently damaged to the point where he can't play without re-injuring it consistently.
Just push chychrun. He will learn. Maybe chabot can learn. I also don’t know what the f*** they did at pre season camp under DJBecause Heiskanen is a top 5 D in the league, is very good on the right side, has played it very well for years with Suter on his left, and they have had a ton of success going all the way to the Conference finals with him playing both sides?
Crazy...
Nobody complained when we had Gonchar lining up on the right side. He's probably the 2nd best RD they have had in 15 years. Because he was very good in the role.
Dump and chase bro.Just push chychrun. He will learn. Maybe chabot can learn. I also don’t know what the f*** they did at pre season camp under DJ
He's been pushed, he's looked very, very bad on the right. Hoping he just "gets it" is nutsJust push chychrun. He will learn. Maybe chabot can learn. I also don’t know what the f*** they did at pre season camp under DJ
I don’t think they’re all that similar honestly. But whatever. Is what it is now. He's been pushed, he's looked very, very bad on the right. Hoping he just "gets it" is nuts
It makes absolutely 0 sense to keep both if we plan on using one on the right side. And that's not even taking into account the redundancy of having both., or the amount to keep Chych

Scoop: Tarasenko has changed agents for the second time in seventh months, hiring teammate Brady Tkachuk’s uncle, Craig Oster, of Newport Sports. What is he seeking with the agent change? We’re not entirely convinced the Senators want to move Tarasenko, who by the way owns a full “no-trade” clause. In what has been a disastrous season, sources say Tarasenko and Claude Giroux have been two important leading voices. They’ve been hugely beneficial to Ottawa’s younger guys mired in another lost season. Tarasenko has also produced above his pay rate. Sens GM Steve Staios recently admitted he hasn’t had discussions with Tarasenko on a contract. And even though he’s an easy UFA to cash in on, he’s not an absolute slam dunk to get traded.
It would but Tank holds all the cards.Anyone see this blurb about Tarasenko from Seravalli?
Keeping Tarasenko beyond the deadline without a contract in place would be insanely bad asset management.
Feel like I'm getting deja vu here.

I'm busy these days.I'm surprised it took you this long to trade for Rempe.
It fills three needs, especially Schneider who could end up being a better tougher version of Zub. Still need a much better goaltender though. They need to change something up. People were unhappy that Watson couldn't fight & it turns out that both Kastelic & MacEwan aren't that tough either. Rempe is only 21 yrs old & as he fills out & gets some man strength could become a legitimate heavyweight. People on here also didn't like Tom Wilson, but as soon as Stutzle gets nailed by someone they all want revenge & get angry when we have no one to fight back who has a chance of winning. It's the toughest position in sport to play & not everyone is good at it.this doesn't do much for me.
Rempe is a plug and Chytil is not what we need upfront.
We need a heavy winger who can play. The sens are better off waiting and see what shakes loose. If Islanders sell Nelson that is more the type we need.
Three young guys who all fill a role, little concerned about Chytil, if they replace with Kakko they would probably have to retain more. That's a lot more than the Sens would get I think, Chytil injured of course but should he get back
Sens would be very happy with that if they could get it
It's a good point & they could replace with Kakko but would probably need to retain more. I like Cuylle LW too.Chytil is dealing with a pretty serious post-concussion recovery, so he is not being traded right now.
Maybe, but could switch with Kakko.Chytil's career is basically over, no chance anyone would trade for him as a player. You'd just be taking his contract however much is left of it.
Re: "I also think you're overestimating the cap space that the Senators have."The reason a Norris buyout has to be done this summer is because he will turn 26, and a buyout will lead to there being twice as much in dead cap. I will copy both buyouts from Capfriendly below. Keep in mind that if we buyout Norris a year later we still have to pay him 8M next season to possibly be ineffective after multiple injuries. So that factors in as well. I understand you're not arguing that they should buy him out down the road, but I am trying to illustrate why they can't just evaluate the Norris situation at a later date, they have to decide this off season (if he is healthy) whether to buy him out or not because it is the last off season where he qualifies for the U26 rastio.
A Korpisalo buyout makes no sense because over the lifetime of the contract/buyout, the cap savings from burying Korpisalo are almost the same as the savings from buying him out. Buying him out only makes sense if it is out of desperation to create needed short-term cap flexibility.
I also think you're overestimating the cap space that the Senators have. They only have 13.5M, and a chunk of that might have to go to covering Sanderson's performance bonuses from this year. So their cap could be as low as 11.5M with only 16 players signed.
I'll assume Chychrun is moved but his money goes to fund part of a top 4 RHD. Then they need to sign Pinto, who will cost 2.5M+ on a bridge deal, or anywhere from 5M-8M on a long-term deal (probably not 8M, but that's the ceiling). They also need a starting goalie, which should cost 4.5M-6.5M. When you look at it that way, even with buying out Norris they are going to be tight to the cap. If they lose both Norris and Tarasenko, they may also need a top 9 forward, which could cost a few million as well.
If they trade Chychrun without cash coming back, and they buyout Norris, they would then have roughly 24M in space with only 14 players signed and they would possibly need to add a top 4 D, starting goalie, Pinto extension, and a top 6 or 9 forward.

Our inability to attract free agents shouldn't really affect the assessment on the 2 potential buyouts though. If we're buying out Norris you might as well factor in the cap space opened up from trading Brady, because I'm sure that would be the final straw for him.
People who think we're going to magically find a starting goalie or a top 4 RD are kidding themselves. It'll be extremely difficult to find one, let alone two.
I would have thought people around here would have sobered up and realized by now that we're a very unattractive UFA destination. I see names like Pesce and Saros being thrown around and it's laughable. They would never sign here barring a massive overpayment, which isn't something a smart franchise does.
Lots of people playing NHL 24 here and not recognizing it's not a strong UFA year and teams won't be hurting for cap space like the last couple off-seasons, so there's going to be a lot of competition for not a lot of talent, which will mean dumb contracts given out on July 1st.
