Let's say you get rid of Tarasenko, Chychrun, Kubalik, buy out Korpisalo, Norris is off the books due to LTIR or buyout.
I guess that frees up about $20 million for next season? Not counting other players getting raises, like Sanderson.
Acquire some assets in terms of draft picks/prospects, sign some UFAs, make a few deals. Aside from asset management, which Dorion sucked ass at, I'm hoping Staois can identify NHL level players that can contribute outside of the top 6/2 and actually increase in value after signing here. So not Hamonic, Hainsey, Dadynov. Sign some guys like Joseph or Demelo that actually improve and become quality depth NHL players. This team would be so much better if Dorion had done that rather that always trotting out bargain bin junk.
The whole FYOUS I think was actually Dorion's objective. It was completely idiotic to put all of your eggs in one basket and empty out all assets because "now is the time to win." You are never going to have a perfect lineup and always need young prospects coming through and flexibility to make trades/signings.
I feel bad for Staois trying to fix this mess. It isn't going to be easy and I give him like a 20% chance of succeeding over the next 2-3 years given what he has to work with. IMO the team needs a short-term and a long-term plan for success. Plan A is to get to the playoffs soon, but you need a contingency plan to restock/retool if that doesn't happen. The team isn't in good shape, currently, to achieve either objective.
The fans are going to be merciless over the next few years if things continue on the same track. Personally I'm not expecting miracles and hope the team can start to: get a good coach, asset management, restock prospect pool, make smart trades/UFAs. Everything isn't going to work out perfectly, but unlike Dorion batting .200 I'd hope to see them batting around 6.00 i.e. winning more moves than losing.
