I would guess it's more of a scenario where they wouldn't want him at 2 years 5.5M if he was available for free, but in the dynamic where they have to take him to facilitate getting the best return for Lindholm, he is a useful piece to take.
So I think it's a bit of a middle-ground type situation, where he isn't a complete cap dump, but maybe they would have preferred an expiring contract over committing 5.5M next season to a player who hasn't looked very good this season.
Things might be different this offseason due to the cap increasing, but 5.5M in free cap would be very valuable to Calgary. The last few offseason have been extreme buyers markets, where if teams have cap space they can basically get good players for next to nothing.
