I think Calgary wants players, since they're re-tooling on the fly. I'd be surprised if they saw Kuzmenko as a dump, I think they wanted him. They were talking about it the other night on Sportsnet, that getting back a usable piece as part of all their deals, is the likely route, to feed their on the fly retool.

CGY should move Kuzmenko to WSH or another team @50% for more assests.

At this point, I think they are better off keeping him as a rental. They are still gunning for a playoff spot.

Worst case scenario, he isn't a fit and his value in the summer is just as low as it is now. Best case scenario, he is a fit and they can either keep him, or trade him for a stronger return.

Even at half retained, it might be difficult to move him right now, unless it is a hockey trade with cap in/cap out. He is better than Kubalik, but it's sort of a similar dynamic.

Oh, he played a preseason game or two?….. still doesn’t mean much if he was waived and then reclaimed within 7 days… two of them travelling … so in Anaheim for perhaps 5 days max… same as if the Sens were there on a road trip…. So No, not a change of scenery as was mentioned in the column.

I would guess it's more of a scenario where they wouldn't want him at 2 years 5.5M if he was available for free, but in the dynamic where they have to take him to facilitate getting the best return for Lindholm, he is a useful piece to take.

So I think it's a bit of a middle-ground type situation, where he isn't a complete cap dump, but maybe they would have preferred an expiring contract over committing 5.5M next season to a player who hasn't looked very good this season.

Things might be different this offseason due to the cap increasing, but 5.5M in free cap would be very valuable to Calgary. The last few offseason have been extreme buyers markets, where if teams have cap space they can basically get good players for next to nothing.

Sens need someone who actually has experience in a higher role though.

They need to make a move where they actually get someone who can come in a fit right into a top 4 role like Van did with Hronek

If that is not avaliable then keep Chychrun
I would like to keep Chychrun and Chabot. I am hoping Kleven becomes our #6 D next season, replacing JBD. I am OK with keeping Brannstrom at about $2M so our D becomes something like:

Chabot - Zub
Chychrun - Brannstrom
Sanderson - Kleven ( or switch their sides)

I'm fine with all this except for Sanderson playing with Kleven. Kleven is likely going to struggle as a #6 D.

If those are the 6 we play I don't see anyway that playing Kleven (on his off side or Sandy's for that matter) with Sanderson is a good idea.

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Chychrun (would rather replace one of these with a 2-way RD like Zub)
Kleven-Brannstrom

If Ottawa can get a haul for Chychrun like Van did with Lindholm then I might be open to it. I am not sure if another young D is needed on our blue line though unless they also move out Hamonic and Branny/JBD and replace them in the summer with a player with a bit more experience.

Sens are kinda in a sticky situation I probably just move Tarasenko and Kubalik and wait for the draft/free agency where some unexpected players may become avaliable due to cap or other reasons
I would like to sign Tarasenko for another few years at a decent affordable price under our cap situation. However, he might have to be let go if we retain Chychrun.

I wonder if the Sens wanted to go cheap on a RD maybe they could send JBD and a 3rd or something to the Sharks for Rutta.

Decent defensive player and signed through next season. A stopgap to try and find a better RD next year.

There is certainly some reasonable logic here. I just think with everything I've read and heard about no true rebuild allowed, and still wanting to compete on a yearly basis, it seems like a move they did make to use the piece, at least temporarily. Foolhardy maybe, but I do think it's a goal there. Guess we'll see. You might be right he's just a pure cap dump.

Flyers possibly going to trade Scott Laughton.

He's someone I could see Staois being very interested in.

Signed for 2 more years at 3M. Can play C but is better at LW. Only 20P/50GP this year but had 43P/78GP last year.

Could see something based around Boucher + BOS 1st + more.

No more trading 1sts until we are in a playoff position unless it’s for a top 4 RD. It’s our biggest position of weakness (maybe after the goalie but we are locked in with Korpi for another year I think). Likewise C/LW is probably our biggest positions of strength so no need to spend high end assets.

Boucher plus a first plus more for Laughton?

Am I the only person who doesn't see what is so special about him?

I wouldn't do it, just saying I could see it happening.

Laughton is the exact kind of gritty two-way veteran player that Staois is apparently looking for.

Flyers reportedly turned down offers of a late 1st + a lot more in the summer, but I think his value has probably dropped since then. Still expect it would take at least a late 1st and another piece.

Not my choice for that kind of cost. He had a career year last year. It's buying high imo and you've already seen his numbers dip back to his more normal range.

Laughton is a very good penalty killer. He can be counted on for about .4 points per game. He would be a fantastic pickup but the acquisition cost sounds crazy.

Ya, not opposed to the player, just the cost to acquire. And I think it's worth pointing out that last years offence jump appears to be an outlier.

I also question our need for a 3rd line center when we've already got Greig playing wing and Pinto back in there. If the plan were to move Norris this summer, I'd be more intrigued.

Laughton can play both LW and C.

I see him as the type of Vet Staios is looking for. Not sure why the + would be needed unless we use it to dump Kubalik.

I am sure Torts would love Kubalik lol

Last year’s offence was due to a bunch of Flyer injuries. Laughton played 3-4 more minutes per game and got PP time.

SCOUTING REPORT
The feisty, hard-working forward plays bigger than his size. He can be used in any situation because of his two-way skills and is a threat to score while killing penalties. Mostly a winger, he can play center as well. Could benefit by adding some strength to complement his aggressive style of play. Is definitely a team-first player.

A good 3rd line replacement that adds more veteran experience or replaces it in the case of Tarasenko leaving. I could see Greig-Pinto-Laughton being a good line

The team needs to stop trading 1sts unless it is for a top 4 RD. We're likely to have enough holes in this lineup in the coming years that we need all the assets we can get. Once Tarasenko is gone, and with Giroux likely being done after next year, we have 2 top 6 spots to fill and not a single prospect in the system capable of playing there. I expect Greig can play 2LW, but we're definitely missing another good forward in the lineup if we want to contend.

IMO top 4 RD, starting goalie and veteran impact forward (in 1-2 years) are the team's most pressing needs.

Laughton can play both LW and C.
Ya, fair point, most seem to be able to shift over as necessary.

Makes sense. Like many others before him. Either way, his production this year seems more in line with what a team should expect to get from him.

A threat to score with 5 goals this year on a good team! Lol, I kid. He would be a fine addition, and is paid accordingly, just not loving that proposed cost to acquire and am more interested in what else they might be looking to do.

Maybe as part of a bigger deal we could get him and Walker?

You have to like the player to give up a late 1st for sure... If they can dump Kubalik in the package its a little more value or have another lesser for greater swap. I certainly do not mind throwing Boucher in but not sure how much it adds.
I have liked Laughton for a while and his production has fallen some , likely opportunities play a part.

Laughton could fit here. There are other up coming UFAs that can fit as well but will they come and at what cost ..,
