The Flyers apparently liked Joseph earlier in the year when he was being talked about as a cap dump. As in, it wasn't just about the sweetener, they liked the player.

Joseph has been tremendous since then. I still get the feeling that we could see him moved. There are very little moves that Staios can make outside of the core because of how big most of the contracts are.

It will be something like Joseph and a 2nd for Laughton.

Gets Flyers and asset but also doesn't hurt them in their playoff run.

You have to like the player to give up a late 1st for sure... If they can dump Kubalik in the package its a little more value or have another lesser for greater swap. I certainly do not mind throwing Boucher in but not sure how much it adds.
I have liked Laughton for a while and his production has fallen some , likely opportunities play a part.

Laughton could fit here. There are other up coming UFAs that can fit as well but will they come and at what cost ..,
Ya, we could do worse. I poked around a bit. Interesting to see Flyers fans not really in love with the guy. Seems to be a few that thought they missed the boat with selling high.

Joseph is arguably our best PK forward, brings a speed element our team badly needs and has been the spark plug on every line he’s played on this season.

This proposal seems quite lateral if we’re losing Joseph to add Laughton. I get we want to add experience but Laughton seems like he’d fill the same type of role at the cost of a second.

The Joseph rebound season and emergence of Greig have certainly made me think we should focus on bigger fish to fill the 2nd LW slot rather than the third line.

I really hope we deal chychrun. Guy could be a norris candidate if he ever puts it all together. But he's shown some bad habits.

Moving Joseph for a 3rd line vet is the definition of a lateral move.
No. It would not be the definition of that.

Why would we trade the younger, faster, more productive player on a near identitical contract along with a 2nd round pick for Laughton?

It makes us older, slower and worse + we lose a pick.

Makes absolutely 0 sense to make that deal.

I don't know why everyone wants to deal Chychryn. We have a guy that actually wants to play here and is excited to be here. It's not like he's terrible or has a massive cap hit.

If his play continues at this level, we aren't going to have to pay him a ton on his next contract either. Whats wrong with him as a 3-4 for 5M? He's still only 25 years old.

You don't trade Joseph for Laughton. And why would Philadelphia trade a guy that would be valuable in the playoffs?

It's been so long since we've been in the playoff hunt, have we forgotten that these teams like to add and not subtract?
Well, in their defence, it is making the rounds atm that they're shopping him.

While he's been one of their best PKers, I read a few claims he's a 4th line C there now. If that's the case, 3 mil seems a bit rich, even as a PKer.

I agree.

But he’s going to cost a lot more than 5m

so you went to the Flyers board or Trade board read some comments and done a reasonably comprehensive study and this is what you are reporting back?

A few claims... imagine coming to this board with the wide array of comments from all over the place and reading a few claims to form an opinion. lol.. Lets take the coaching change thread or the staois thread as an example...

Here is a 2024-25 roster. $86,733,714.

Players under contract for next year are included. Hence, players not under contract are generally/mostly not included.

The notables include:

1. A new 2nd line winger for $5 m (or re-sign Tarasenko @ $5m)

2. Pinto with a new bridge contract @ $2.3 m (quite conservative, might cost more)

3. 2nd pair -> Chabot and a new RD @ $7 m. For those that prefer Chychrun, think of it as a $15 m budget for the 2nd pair, plus we'd save (add) $2.4 m to our budget. Chychrun will need a new contract though for 2025-26.

4. Kleven & JBD as the 3rd pair.

About $770 k under the cap. Can't see where the budget supports all these other players that are mentioned in posts unless perhaps Chabot is moved while keeping Chychrun, or a less expensive player moves higher up in the lineup.

100% lol. It was about as far as I cared to take it I guess. I tried to cover my butt by saying "if that's the case..." instead of saying it matter of fact.

Edit: His TOI does indicate he's playing higher up the lineup other than maybe 4 of the last 5 games, but that's a pretty rudimentary measure of his role.

And just to add. I think I was surprised to see any criticism of him and caught me off guard. Thought he was that darling universally loved type guy because of his play style and contract.

The move I could see is Laughton coming in to replace Tarasenko for next season, not Joseph.

We need more players like Joseph and I'm sure Staios feels the same. Laughton doesn't have his speed but he'll be highly valued around the league for his all-around game and bargain contract. Could be a great fit beside Pinto and Joseph on the 3rd line next season.

Trading Tarasenko for a late 1st and then turning around and using that on Laughton wouldn't be the worst move in the world. I'd prefer we keep the pick and try to buy-low on someone without Laughton's high price tag, but it's absolutely something I could see happening.

I had a similar thought pattern and that is reflected in a roster spreadsheet = post #3592.

trade kubalik, chychrun, tank and listen to offers on norris and brann.

Assuming we trade tank, chychrun and kubalik, take that cash and go after a top 4 dman and a 3rd liner in UFA and promote Greig or Joseph to top 6.

Older and slower yes but definitely not worse. Adding Laughton makes sense but not at the stupid prices rumoured. The Boston pick is the most I’d pay.

If Ottawa can get a haul for Chychrun like Van did with Lindholm then I might be open to it. I am not sure if another young D is needed on our blue line though unless they also move out Hamonic and Branny/JBD and replace them in the summer with a player with a bit more experience.

Sens are kinda in a sticky situation I probably just move Tarasenko and Kubalik and wait for the draft/free agency where some unexpected players may become avaliable due to cap or other reasons
I would definitely move out the three UFAs (Tarasenko, Kubalic & Chartier) although it doesn't hurt to have Chartier in Belleville as a callup. I would also move Brannstrom & Hamonic (or waive him or buy him out) & have JBD as the 7th D for next season, but JBD could be on the ropes as well. There are a number of RD who could be available through free agency Montour FL, Pesce Car, Roy LA, Dumba Arz, Tanev Cal & Myers Van along with others. Ottawa should be able to get one or two on a 2 to 3 yr contract who can come in & fill a role, it's there biggest need. I would also like to see how Guennette would do in a 3rd pairing role with Kleven, but if they are not ready there are going to be plenty of defencemen available & Ott should have some money to sign at least one good one. I would also have a decision & plan available regarding Chabot & Chychrun on which one to keep & whether we trade one which I think we should.

Done (with 2024-25 numbers/cap hits). Players not under contract (Kubalik & Brannstrom) were not included. See post #3592 above.
