I guess that answers my question, management and coaching not at all in the same page and management just making trades and signings without any forethought.
Not sure how you're coming to that conclusion, we got Gudbranson and Zub that offseason after letting DeMelo go. Zub had very limited command of the English language and due to Covid limited opportunity to learn the system and build chemistry with his teammates in preseason, so the coach eased him in.

Dorion was crap, we don't need to make up reasons for why he was a bad GM, there's lots of legitimate reasons to critique him

So we’re going with the rational of horrible management and coaching as “Zub just needed 2 more weeks of English lessons to be a Top 4 NHL Dman.”

You're being deliberately obtuse, so I'm not seeing the value in continuing to discuss this with you, if and when you're ready to discuss things like an adult, maybe we can continue, but somehow I doubt that time will come

Sounds good. When you’ve taken you’re time out I’ll be here to continue the discussion

Ohh, mod throwing personal insults
around because I critiqued Pierre Dorion for poor management.
I didn't insult you, I just pointed out your posts are unbecoming of an adult wanting to seriously discuss a topic. I'm critical of the caliber of your posts on this subject, nothing more.

I wonder what Philly is interested in. Tarasenko and Kubalik don't strike me as Torts kind of players. Maybe they like Chychrun?

Great player but makes no sense for us given the price, contract, and age.
It s seem I heard Batherson in the past. I wonder wich player interest us with Hart not in the equation

I don’t mind if we acquire him. But he seems to be in acquire him by any means necessary mode. Now obviously I don’t know for sure. But the guy is gonna be an FA soon. Just bid for him there. Use the assets to get something else that can help us or something else that can get something else. Or something. Else.

Also don’t know why he would agree to sign when he’s traded. He’s 34 not sure he wants to babysit

The Tanev rumours from Freidman are interesting. Of all teams interested, our 2nd round pick would likely close to the best offer.

Funny because it’s true. Don’t see a fit there at all, it doesn’t address team needs.
Haven’t followed him much since he’s been in the league but the knock on him coming out was that he was super one-dimensional. If that’s still the case seems like a weird fit

Kaliyev is a big boy who is really hard to move on the boards and down low. He is a + shooter and playmaker and can play with good players as well as a commitment to getting better offensively and defensively.

I'm sure Jacques could work with Kaliyev fine, since he's a great coach and Kaliyev is a pretty good talent.

If we can get him cheap it's a no brainer.

Pay the rental price for Tanev in a lost season and then try to sign him to a UFA deal he probably won't live up to.

Can't stress enough how stupid that would be. Reminds me when we dealt a 1st for Comrie and Campoli back in 09 when we were bottom 5.

He's coming with a contract more than likely.

I don't think this is true anymore. We're seeing it right now with Kubalik - a one-dimensional shooter who's not good enough to play in the top 6 is not a good fit on this roster.

I almost forgot about campoli. Wow :)
Those were the days.

Well, at least Tanev can say he was/is a good player. Campoli was just never very good by NHL standards, and nothing more than bottom pairing cannon fodder at his peak.

I shudder to think of the contract it would take to convince Tanev to waive his NTC to come to a bottom feeder and extend here when he's probably wanting to win a cup before his career is up.

Not a good idea.
  • 4.5M-5.0M AAV.
  • 3-4 years of term.
  • NMC until the final year.
  • Buyout protection vis either front-loaded money and/or signing bonuses.*
*Buyout protection doesn't mean he cannot be bought out, only that he loses less money with that structure.

His value on the open market is probably 2 years at 4.5M with a limited NTC.

The alternative would be something like 2 years but at an inflated AAV like 6M, along with a NMC, front-loaded money, etc.

He will want some sort of protection against being in the AHL, so they might get away with signing him to a modified NMC that prevents him from going to the AHL, but allows the Senators to trade him to a set number of NHL teams. A full NMC might not be a big sticking point if he doesn't specifically want to be in Ottawa anyways, because if he is bad we won't be able to trade him, and if he is good we're not trading him.

He is 34 years old. If the Senators roll up to him with a strong 3 year contract, he will absolutely sign. I know we're all crushed that the canal is struggling to stay open, but I don't think he will care. A player in his position doesn't have enough upside to gamble if a team wants to sign them to something exceeding what his agent might expect in free agency.

Probably not the greatest of ideas, but I can stomach it if it is a shorter term deal with an inflated AAV instead of a longer-term deal.

He was actually really good for us in the last 25 games that year. Had 13 points in 25 games to finish the year and looked like a top 4 guy, then went back to being a bottom pairing guy the following year.

Helped us go from 5th worst to 9th worst and we ended up with Cowen instead of OEL/Kadri. Tried to offer extra picks to move back up to 7th to take Kadri but obviously Burke turned Murray down.

Case-in-point of why it doesn't make sense to add talent late in the year when the season is already lost. The cost isn't just the assets you give up to get the player. If they even help you win a couple extra games down the stretch your draft pick is getting knocked down and you may be forced to settle for a lesser talent.
