I would rather keep Chychrun at $8M starting in 2025-26. I would move either Chychrun or Sanderson to RD.

Chabot does not seem to play well at RD; same for LD. :)

Tanev is likely going to decline into a pylon soon as he is age 34.

I hope Kleven becomes the big physical defensive D we need; maybe we could train him to be an RD while he is Belleville.
Ok

There is risk, but by that logic Tarasenko should be scratched, same with Chychrun (if) they identified the deadline as the time to move him. Every time we play Tarasenko, we risk losing out on whatever his return is, even know our season is already done.

I suppose you're right though, that the optics of acquiring a player without an extension would be very bad if he got hurt and didn't re-sign. Especially if the trade is for picks, and not a hockey trade.
Yes but we didn’t give up batherson or Joseph to get tarasenko lol.

A deal as you describe cannot happen. I don’t THINK staios would do something like that. But I don’t know Staios.

None of the LHD can play right side
It's a disaster every time
They need a legit RHD
Should have traded DBC+ for Hronek last winter

DeMelo was a Ufa. He was going to get a decent contract. He got 4 years. Very easy move to criticize in hindsight because he's played well but idk, I wasn't hugely upset with it at the time
I wasn’t bothered at all when Demelo was traded, but what Melnyk/Dorion gave us the following year was awful.

Unless you teach him to shoot the other way, training someone to play the off side just does not happen. The issue is when you go in towards the boards, you are facing the wrong way all the time, back towards your net, not the opposition net. It a physical limitation that cannot be overcome. I want my d men to be chipping the puck out along the glass, not always throwing it behind their own net.

Does Tanev stop unscreened shots from the blue line from going into the net?

It doesn’t matter if you got the 2010 Team Canada Olympics Dcore if your goalie lets in low danger muffins from everywhere.

Apparately Jiricek not happy in Columbus. I would give our first for him.
I would give our second first for him (Boston's most likely).

I'm not saying it would happen nor that he would be good at it; however, it might be something to try out. After all, some famous players have done it so it is not impossible.

Where did you hear that?

It s everywhere. Jiricek talk about it on the athletic but I have no subscription

Top 10 probably doesn’t get a bite. On the chance we climb out of the bottom, you’d have to expect the sens will make the playoffs next year right? …. Right?
I'd rather trade something else than our pick this year. This is a D rich draft. We need it.

You want an established experienced defenseman right now with size on the right, you can bet Poulin is saying that to Staios. I'm seriously considering 1st+Mayfield for Chychrun. I know the contract is long in the tooth but he can be bought out down the line. He'd be an excellent solider for us if we couldn't get a Pesce.

Also I only see us trading for Tanev if we already have a trade lined up for Chychrun. Which is interesting...I'd see NYI or Van being aggressive b/c of their GM histories. 1st+prospect for Chych then trade Bos 1st for Tanev with an agreement. Maybe turn around and trade him again after giving Chabot a test run with a good RHD.

He s better then all the rd rank in the top ten. He have two years of development. Staois have to go all in

It has happened - there are guys in the league right now who play their off side. Some Sens in the past have like Volchenkov and Meszaros.

I'd rather we keep our three top picks this draft and see what we can land in free agency.

I dont see the point in risking assets and taking a risk on tanev. We're not going to get a deal on his contract by trading for him.

Just take the risk on a relatively short term free agent, even if we gotta pay a bit extra to land him.

Agree
We are not a Tanev away from making the PO
Stop trading picks that will be useful in 3-4-5 years when hopefully we can make bit of noise
Go free agent all the way for now

I'm not against the idea of trading picks outside of about the top 20 for players.

I generally think that's a smart idea. And if there are useful NHL quality players we can land with mid round picks or b prospects, I'm in.

Like a 3rd round pick for a guy like Parker Kelly or Brannstrom is a good move in my books. You win that trade 9 out of 10 tmes.

But don't trade higher picks for more expensive expiring rentals without a contract. It hamstrings your ability to negotiate with them. It's a recipe for an overpay.

You honestly think we have a 90% chance to get a better NHL player than Kelly or Bran in the third round?

I’m not sure the stats support that assertion at all .

Very few and they are 99% European players. And it happens a lot in the NHL on the PP.

Why?

Watch the European game, where it is very common to play the opposite side, forward and D. This is due to how the extra size of the rink, notably in the ends (not the neutral zone) being so much larger, especially wider, affects the game as it is played defensively. Regular play on a Euro ice rink looks more like a NA PP where players do not chase into the boards, they keep them to the outside because they are far less of a danger. There, as in North America on the PP, you have time and space out there to maneuver and work with the puck, unlike a North American ice surface.

If this were possible on any kind of scale, teams would be doing it to cover the lack of RHD in the league. The fact that they are not pretty much tells all.
