The year after DeMelo left we had Zaitsev, Zub, Gudbranson and Brown all play a decent number of games and it was the first year that JBD arrived in the NHL for a few games.

Hindsight. Ya. 100%. Should have been kept.

At the time, idk, we had 2 young RD's that were 1st rounders, Zaitsev with term. Chabot was viewed as a stud that could drag along anyone.

Lots of moves that were dumb at the time and dumb in hindsight. Not sure this is one of them.

I honestly don't see Chychrun as a #1 when he's on. He can produce like a top pairing defenseman when he's on but he doesn't control the game or dictate the pace of play. He's an excellent #2 to #4 depending on the night.

Yeah. 4,5,and 6 in particular. Assuming Carlo’s head is ok (6concussions?). We picked Gagne instead of Carlo. Always hurt my stomach from day 1.

Yeah it was dumb. He was a good partner for our top 4. and we got a third for him. And like you said. The plan was to get players like gudbranson zaitsev and co. Very bad players. These were bad decisions when they were. Not in hindsight.

Thinking Thomson and jbd would play anytime soon in a top 4 role. Bad thought at the time. Bad thought in hindsight. The management team should have known how ready Thomson and jbd were lol.


It was just dumb as shit. Plain as simple. Getting rid of demelo because you don’t honk he’s good enough is dumb. Thinking Thomson jbd zaitsev gudbranson would be good enough…also dumb

It was a dumb move because of management thinking Zaitsev or Gudbranson were good enough RD to replace DeMelo's presence.

You don't trade the guy who anchored the pairing where your rookie defender who's expected to try filling EK's shoes scores 55 points and played decent defence. It was a horrible move at the time because it showed how bad management's pro-evaluation was at the time.

DeMelo played most of his last year here on the third pair with Boro (another guy who imo we should have kept that year).

I recall Boro and DeMelo being together at the start of the season and pre-season until DJ came to his senses and reunited them in November.

Well, Boro only played 53 games due to injuries, I think he got a concussion that year, but Delo still played significantly more with Boro (365 at 5v5) than with Chabot (235). He spent some more time with Reilly and Brannstrom too, about another 120 or so combined, only about 30% of his icetime was with Chabot when both were in the lineup

Thats certainly true, I'd have preferred if we did play DeMelo with Chabot, but if the question is how much were we going to miss him, and who would we replace him with, well where he played in the lineup becomes more relevant.
 
DeMelo was a Ufa. He was going to get a decent contract. He got 4 years. Very easy move to criticize in hindsight because he's played well but idk, I wasn't hugely upset with it at the time

It was a weird situation, people were worried about how much he'd get in UFA, some thought he'd get crazy amounts (I vaguely recall 5 mil being thrown around).

Covid hitting and wiping out the end of the year likely meant he took a bit of a haircut, but I'd have gladly extended him to the contract he got rather than trade him for a third,

He was well liked in the room, seemed happy to be here, and worked no matter where we put him in the lineup, it seemed we wanted to get bigger on the backend, I'd have gathered we kept him and Boro than the direction we went tbh.
