+ / - is only a usefull stat when you compare it to other players on his own team. When the team has a negative goal differential its useful.Tarasenko has to agree to waive his trade protection
+17. Man i coulda sworn i was recently told about his xGA/60 and how plus minus was a useless number
“Has done a lots of talking”. Is that a shot at staios?
LA do not want to add Tarasenko, because Arvidsson coming back in 2 weeksTo LA: Tarasenko LHRW & Thompson RD ($5 mil out)
To Ott: Roy RD & Kaliyev RW ($4 mil in)
To Columbus or Ann: Kubalik LW & Brannstrom LD ($4.5 mil out)
To Ottawa: Peeke RD or Lyubuskin RD ($2.750 mil in)
- make a decision in the summer on one of Chabot or Chychron. (Chabot - Laine)
- both Tarasenko & Roy are UFAs, might need contracts in place for each.
- place Hamonic on waivers
- Columbus could pair up Gubranson & Brannstrom to form a GubransonBrannstrom tandem.
- LA might want to add Tarasenko for more scoring in the playoffs. They got the better RW & we got the better RD?
Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
Greig - Norris - Batherson
Joseph - Pinto - Kaliyev
Kelly - Kastelic - MaEwan
Sanderson - Roy
Chabot - Zub
Chychron - Peeke/JBD

I got to believe that the Pens just had no interest in what we had to offer (within reason).Remember when there was a 25YR old right-handed top 4 defensive defenseman available for dirt cheap and we passed him up because his 5 year term @ a reasonable 4.4M per was too long?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
I think Blake Coleman is the target
I’d say Boone Jenner too but he’s going to be super expensive. Maybe Kuraly too from CBJ. I can’t really think of other 200ft players that may be available.
I’d more so like to see the defence revamped and maybe an adjustment to the 4th line.
Norris needs to be a lot better but I’m giving him the benefit of missing a full season with shoulder surgery. I also think he can move to wing

The likely valued Smith more than Brannstrom, JBD or Thomson, so after that, what could we do to tip the scales. We weren't going to give up 7oa for Marino at that time, would they have been willing to take a lesser prospect and picks to offset the difference?
The only thing that in hindsight I could see as working is something built around swapping firsts but even that likely would have been seen as overpayment, and i don't think the pens had a 2nd that year.
Hindsight being what it is, Marino would have made a lot more sense than DBC or Chychrun, but here we are.
Smith was waiver eligible, Brannstrom was not. Neither of them likely make the team out of camp so that distinction carried value to the Pens, regardless of what you thought of their relative value (if memory serves, the general sense was Smith was more valuable as Brannstrom was still seen as an offensive Dman that can't provide offense while Smith had at least shown some offense. Both were terrible defensive players that needed to be sheltered, yet still managed big minuses, when you correct for games played they were close. If Brannstrom wasn't valued as high as Smith, which I do question given Smith was legitimately one of the worst D in the league that year, you offer more than a measly 3rd round pick in extra compensation to outbid the Devils.
From the sounds of it value wasn't the issue, it was term. Dorion had no problem throwing 5 years at one of the most inconsistent goalies in the league but a 5 year term for a proven 2nd pairing shutdown D was too long.
Maddening.
I think it is possible that they needed to dump Zaitsev to acquire Marino (they were still a budget team). The price to dump him may have been higher during the offseason than it ended up being at the trade deadline. Or, Dorion didn't want to close the book on acquiring Chychrun.
They would have been better off with Marino in terms of fit in the lineup, and long-term cap. If the cost would have been a 2nd+Brannstrom or JBD or Thomson, and then an additional 2nd to dump Zaitsev, they clearly would have been better off. Still, we don't know if teams were asking for a 1st to take Zaitsev in the summer.

The idea that his term was too long was speculation by Garrioch if I recall, nothing solid. In the end, Dorion can offer more but if the Pens weren't interested in an extra 2nd or two, and see more value in Smith than Brannstrom what are you going to do.
It takes two teams to make a trade, not all teams like the same players,
Do you really think Garrioch is intentionally going to infer the GM of the Senators is stupid?Garrioch thinks he is clever by inferring Staios is stupid enough to think a 200 foot player would be available. Like we're all going to read that and go wtf is he on drugs? Most players are 6 feet, maybe 7 feet max. A 200 foot hockey player has never existed, let alone a 200 foot human.
I am tired of Garrioch taking shots at Staios. Dorion and Melnyk are gone, get over it.

Lots of teams trade for guys that you don't like, sometimes the trades work out, sometimes they don't. Lots of teams draft guys you don't like, likewise, sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn'tThat argument never passed the smell test for me. You don't trade for Smith as the centerpiece in a Marino trade because he sucks and you can send him to the AHL.
Sens missed the boat. Plain and simple. All this rationalization ignores that we should have been desperate enough to add a top 4 D that we should have significantly outbid what the Devils offered because we needed Marino a heck of a lot more than they did.
I see people talking about adding a top 4 RD this summer as if it'll be easy to convince someone like Pesce/Roy to sign here. It's almost certainly not happening. If this team wants to fill the 2nd pairing RD hole that has existed on this team for over a decade, it'll have to be by trade, and good luck finding another team stupid enough to trade a young top 4 defensive D.
Nick Paul was almost 200 feet wasn't he?Garrioch thinks he is clever by inferring Staios is stupid enough to think a 200 foot player would be available. Now that the team is playing more like JM wants, Korpi has been solid, the last 5 starts or so.The trades are not meant as complete trade ideas. They are the main components. I'm not trying to figure out who should kick in a 3rd or 4th round pick, or aspects like that. The point is to figure out logical change-of-scenery swaps for Korpisalo.
It is unlikely that we move him without some sort of pain (retention or taking back another player who is playing poorly). The point of the trades isn't to point out some sort of home run where we get out of the contract cleanly without any negative reprecussions.
_______
Korpisalo to SEA for Grubauer?
-Seattle gets a goalie with a lower cap hit to backup Daccord long-term.
-We get the goalie with the higher cap hit but less term.
-Both sides benefit from the change of scenery, but they don't need a starter, only a backup long-term.
Korpisalo to LAK for Rittich? (Third team retains on Korpisalo)
-Korpisalo was good in the system of LAK.
-We bring in a third team who has a player signed for 2 or 3 years in a different position that they want to dump. Such as, Peeke from Columbus.
-Ottawa takes the bad contract from the third team, the third team retains on Korpisalo.
Korpisalo to EDM for Jack Campbell?
-Both teams benefit from the change of scenery.
-Edmonton gets 1M in cap relief at the expense of taking on 1 more year of term.
Korpisalo to CBJ for Elvis?
-Similar to the EDM and SEA deals. We take on a higher cap hit goalie, but we get out a year earlier. The other team does it because there is no reasonable way to dump their bad goalie, but Korpisalo's cap hit is more manageable.
Korpisalo (Half Retained) to TBL for Connor Sheary & Jonas Johansson?
-Sheary is not producing in Tampa. This trade would allow him to come to Ottawa and play a bigger role. It gives Staios a veteran forward who has been on many contenders.
-Tampa's goalie situation has been rocky with Vasilevskiy's injuries and slow play since recovering. This gives them a veteran #2 goalie. Given how tough the goalie market is right now, gambling that Korpisalo's problem is Ottawa might be their best move.
-Sheary has a NTC. With Tampa outside of the playoffs, and his minimized role, maybe he would waive to come to Ottawa where he'd be leaned on as a bigger part of the top 6-9 and a veteran leader.
Coleman makes way too much money and term left for a fourth liner.I think Blake Coleman is the target
