To New Jersey:
Tarasenko ($1.2 M retained)
Boucher

To Ottawa:
Haula
Lazar
2025 1st (protected)

Jersey gets a veteran winger for the postseason to ride shotgun with one of their top 2 Cs and a flyer in Boucher.

Ottawa gets a good veteran 3rd liner who is good both ways and a solid 4th liner who is cheap. And obviously a late 1st next year.

Thoughts?
But we don’t need either player that we get, and Boucher could end up being a better add in a year or two than either NJD player. Late first is fine for Tank if he wants to go there.

I see people talking about adding a top 4 RD this summer as if it'll be easy to convince someone like Pesce/Roy to sign here. It's almost certainly not happening. If this team wants to fill the 2nd pairing RD hole that has existed on this team for over a decade, it'll have to be by trade, and good luck finding another team stupid enough to trade a young top 4 defensive D.
If you pay they will come and there are several on the market and hopefully fewer teams with the cap space or desperation to force us out of the running.

Short list of useful RHD that are available this summer, some aren't ideal but still:

Pesce
Tanev
Montour
Demelo
Roy
Hakanpaa
Walker
Schultz
Carrier
Barrie
Deangelo
Dumba
Lyubushkin

And then yeah, you have the trade market.

Point is that supply is high enough that it shouldn't be an all out arms race. If we have $4M or more earmarked we should be able to land somebody from the middle of that list.

Also, North of the border could be more attractive for some players with upcoming events playing out in the US (ie. Trump).

We don't need a third liner and the way Boucher looks in Belleville he is not worth giving away.

The first for Tarasenko, yes.

A big chunk of those guys will re-sign with their current or post-TDL teams.

There won't be many legitimate top 4 RHD available in free agency.

I feel like we could have gotten more for debrincst at the deadline than we did in the summer

Probably a similar package. Playoff pick, and 1-2 B or C prospects.

Considering that trading Debrincat for Kubalik likely opened the cap needed for Tarasenko, they are probably better off asset wise with having traded Debrincat in the summer. They will get something for Tarasenko, so it's almost like double-dipping.

Not to mention, keeping a disgruntled player with one foot out the door is always a distraction that teams don't want.

You've listed 5 legitimate top 4 defensemen - Pesce, Roy, Montour, Tanev and DeMelo.

The rest are bottom pairing guys. Tanev is too old and Montour is not what we need.

Leaves Pesce, Roy and DeMelo. Would any of them want to sign here? Doubtful.

Would probably require a significant overpayment, and given that UFA contracts are almost always overpayments in money and/or term, that would mean a contract we'd probably regret in short order.

Hakanpaa would be fine too, maybe even Lyubushkin (although I haven't watched a ton of him). People overestimate what you need. The right fit can just as easily supplant the stud that everyone thinks we need. Heck JBD could be the guy if he hits the next gear and plays the role properly.

Demelo on his own is not a sure fire top 4 guy for example but put him in the right situation and he is more than fine. David Savard is not a shiny toy yet he is just fine in the right top 4 role. This is why Peeke could be fine too, why I wanted to offer sheet Perbix last year, why Jan Ruuta could even be a target etc...

We need a steadying force who doesn't handle the puck like a grenade and who can clear the front of the net and log 82 games to compliment Chabot/Sanderson/ Chychrun who will do the heavy lifting on that pair. We also need to consider that that guy will kill be a PK horse since we will only have JBD and Zub as hired guns for that role when Hamonic and Brannstrom are gone.

It is as much about finding that person with untapped potential or the right fit as it is about recruiting the sure fire guy, at least when you consider that the sure fire guy is hard to come by as you originally ascertained (and which I agree with). Point is there isn't just one way to look at this problem.

Look no further than Vegas' complimentary D over the years to see this point in action.

Lazar def needs to come back. Is he better than kastelic ?

I think you just described Anton Volchenkov

A nice bundle of Nostradamus + cynicism.

Dylan DeMelo...40th ranked defender in WAR over the last three seasons...not a top four guy on his own.

5th in EVD WAR over that time...not a top four guy...needs support.

My argument at the time was that we should have used our limited cap space on Marino instead of DeBrincat, as we clearly needed a top 4 defensive D more than another big money scoring forward, but people were caught up in the "Summer of Dorion" excitement and disagreed.

That argument never passed the smell test for me. You don't trade for Smith as the centerpiece in a Marino trade because he sucks and you can send him to the AHL.

Sens missed the boat. Plain and simple. All this rationalization ignores that we should have been desperate enough to add a top 4 D that we should have significantly outbid what the Devils offered because we needed Marino a heck of a lot more than they did.

The Sens can get a RD in free agency but like many markets we will have to overpay by 1M and give an extra year.

For example Tanev would likely require 4 years at 5M, Pesce 6.5-7M for 7 years.

Since @BondraTime has brought up Hakanpaa I’ve checked him out and I agree he’d be a good fit. Probably take a 4 year deal at 16M to get him here.

The Winnipeg Jets seem to think differently. Both of the sources linked below have Demelo on the top pair. Some might put little emphasis on pairings (finding the right, complimentary partner), while NHL coaches seem more focused on it.

I am being sarcastic....

User @PlayersLtd claimed, just a few posts above mine, that "Demelo on his own is not a sure fire top 4 guy for example but put him in the right situation and he is more than fine."

I never got that argument. D man ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS play with a partner. So how can someone say “on their own they’re not this or that”

I'm not sure why you do not think the Sens need a player like Montour? Look at the Avs arguably the best team in the NHL have multiple D-man who can pinch at the blue line and extend plays.
