If we are going for Tanev, it probably costs us the Boston 1st, unless the market ends up soft.

I supposed with Calgary now playing better, it could also be a hockey trade.
Better be an extension coming with the trade otherwise why are we buying at the deadline. I think we should be looking at a younger player. Tanev can easily fall off like Hamonic.

DeMelo was a Ufa. He was going to get a decent contract. He got 4 years. Very easy move to criticize in hindsight because he's played well but idk, I wasn't hugely upset with it at the time
He played well here, too. Anything is easy to critique in hindsight; however, I do not think this is a situation that requires hindsight.

I agree. Even if we just look at signing him this summer, I wouldn’t mind overpaying him for two years but if it ends up being a longer term contract, I don’t think we should be doing that.

The Fiala trade is a perfect example of poor evaluation for the sens. Garrioch said they thought his contract demands were too high so that's why they were out. Instead they traded 7th overall for a one year rental. Meanwhile Fiala is outplaying his contract.

Fiala is garbage. The Kings would love to dump him. We missed an iceberg.

Tanev is close to the wrong side of 30. Not sure if he is what this team really needs especially given his age and aspirations for maybe going to a contender in the twighlight years of his career.
I would argue he's exactly what this team needs, but fair to acknowledge the contract is a concern and he might see us as too far off.

I bet he ends up back in Vancouver.

I would assume he comes with an extension if we go after him. Which is another aspect. We may have to give him a strong offer if we want him to extend.
Or he can maintain like Giordano. Based on skillset, style, history and physical build I would say the latter is more likely. 2-3 more years of steady play would be a fair expectation of Tanev and after that he could still have some left in the tank for 3rd pair duties.

Boston projects to win their division. If so, the pick will be one of the last few of the round even without Boston making the Conference Final. If they can get at least a 2nd for Tarasenko, while dropping from 26-32 to the middle or end of the second round wouldn't be a wash, they at least recoup something. If they can get a 1st for Tarasenko, then they recoup the pick they give up for Tanev.

If it is a hockey trade, the only player who would make sense would be Joseph or Batherson. Calgary might need a Dube replacement, and they are also apparently shopping Lindholm. They are in a weird position, because they are still fighting for a wild card spot. So a hockey trade for a controllable asset might be appealing.

Obviously, no one here is going to want to move Joseph or Batherson for Tanev, let alone Tanev without an extension.

Hypothetically, if it is Joseph for Tanev, and he doesn't re-sign, they could flip Tanev at the deadline for a similar return to what Joseph might have gotten them. Of course, there would be injury risks.

The other option would be Tarasenko for Tanev, but I highly doubt Tarasenko would waive to go to Calgary.

Hear me out

Thomas Chabot

For

Mackenzie Weegar

Considering the season Weegar is having and Chabot’s age, who’s adding? Money wise it works. Stabilizes the RD side. Thoughts

Tanev- "He's got heart, he's got class, but the guy is made of glass."

That's because DJ wanted to play the elite defender with Chabot .. which most fans were complaining about . No more complaining to play Demelo with Chabot if he's not here.
Zaitsev the “elite defender” should have been the sign to fire DJ. One of the wildest things a coach has ever said.

I’m sorry. Batherson..for tanev? And then flip tanev at the deadline if he won’t resign.? What? That’s way too much chaos for this team right now.

Tanev is theoretically worth a 1st round pick. It would be a horrendous trade to make. The point I was making was that if we're not giving up a 1st for Tanev, it probably has to be a hockey trade with one of those three names. Joseph makes the most sense value wise and fit wise with Calgary, and Friedman has recently speculated about his fit on other teams, which would be strange if his name isn't out there.

If the base is Joseph for Tanev, Ottawa can justify not being able to talk to Tanev before the trade, because the return of Tanev at the deadline is probably similar to what Joseph would return (if not higher). That means that if they cannot convince Tanev to sign an extension, they can possibly flip him for a late 1st.

And if tanev gets hurt? No wat sens do this. They simply cannot risk that

If we trade for Tanev and pay him about $4.5M per, someone with a similar salary needs to go.

We will have Chabot, Sanderson and possibly Chychrun at $8M each plus Zub at $4.6M starting in 2025-26.

There is risk, but by that logic Tarasenko should be scratched, same with Chychrun (if) they identified the deadline as the time to move him. Every time we play Tarasenko, we risk losing out on whatever his return is, even know our season is already done.

I suppose you're right though, that the optics of acquiring a player without an extension would be very bad if he got hurt and didn't re-sign. Especially if the trade is for picks, and not a hockey trade.

It would be a hockey trade. Say..errrrr...ahhh....pffft....Chabot, Forberg for Tanev, Vladar, piece to balance books, picks.....ya know what I mean. This is just a rough sketch, use whatever players you want.

I would rather keep Chychrun at $8M starting in 2025-26. I would move either Chychrun or Sanderson to RD.

Chabot does not seem to play well at RD; same for LD. :)

Tanev is likely going to decline into a pylon soon as he is age 34.

I hope Kleven becomes the big physical defensive D we need; maybe we could train him to be an RD while he is Belleville.
