How is it bizarre? Its a hard cap. Its actually not that hard to figure out.

nBAs system is bizarre with all the exceptions. Nfls is bizarre with restructuring and cuts. NHL is fine. MLBs is system is bizarre in that most teams will never be competitive because they cant afford it.

To me the NhLs makes the most sense. Here is a cap. Stay under it. The only two tweaks to make it perfect would be to use actual salary instead of AAV so teams can structure their contracts to keep good teams together. Or have a one person draft pick exepmtion. Ie one player your team drafted does not count against the cap.

Otherwise i love the nhl cap.
I mean the whole thing. The cap. The cba. The monopoly. All of it. Other NA sports too.

right, well just bc everyone else sucked then why are we sitting here pretending that this guy will be a difference maker as a 2c here when he wasnt one at all for the canes? the only things i see are "panarin made strome good," but that also happened when panarin was an attacking player. when panarin stayed on the perimeter the line sucked, strome sucked. this whole relying on panarin to make an average player great thing sure didnt work on in the playoff run last year. trocheck is a 3c on a contender. he is a 2c on a hopeful. i would like to think we are doing more than hoping now.

This is bull shit.

He was their 2nd line center

Canes C TOI (Regular season):

Aho: 18:57
Trocheck: 17:52
Staal: 16:38

In the playoffs, the only forward who played more than him was Sebastian Aho.

The Canes may have lost to us, but they were certainly a contender last year. Don't revisionist history this shit.

Also production wise he very much did his part in that series and the run for Carolina. The guys around him (especially people like Svechnikov) did not. The expectation shouldn't be for him to do what Zibanejad did, if he were capable of that we wouldn't be talking about him as a realistic option right now.

I think people have expectations that are too high of what a 2C really looks like

Most teams (and the Rangers) can't afford to have a 1C and a 2C who also puts up 70+ points. Sometimes they get lucky with some lightning in a bottle like CO did with Kadri but realistically guys in that 50-60 point range who are versatile and come in with a contract that makes them fit into the lineup are fine and what is more realistic to expect, especially if you're strong on the wings (which is what the Rangers should be...if they're not then their drafting has been unfortunate)
Agreed- Most teams are lucky to have their 2C put up 50 points. There are only a few teams in the league that have a 2C putting up over 70 points.

There’s a lot of reasons to like the future in NJ, sorry to say. They, like more than half the league, just need the goaltending.

Their defensive depth chart is still highly questionable.

Their situation on defense makes the Schneider move even better. He could have really made the future of that team so much better.

can someone explain to me why they have massive issues paying copp who we know fit here basically the same money it would take to get trocheck, but those same people are willing to pay trocheck? Their 5v5 scoring is fairly close if not leans to copp based on a quick look at numbers, they are comparable historically on faceoffs, copp is younger, we know copp played great with panarin already without strome on the line (he and panarin were great together until strome came back). I just dont understand how people can be like screw copp but are in love with trocheck.

I don't see Copp being a Center in an optimal lineup.

Copp is a concussion away from retirement. So is Mika. Can't have your two top centers in that same situation.

And defense.... and size.... and leadership... and coaching...

JG to NJ is alot like Tavaras to TOR. Yes you're adding a good player, but it's not really a need. It's adding another tiny forward with speed to a line up that is filled with them.

They'll be great off the rush... and thats about it.

how has it worked out for them?

Dont confuse me saying he is a 3c on a cup contender to me saying he hasnt been used as a 2c already. i know he has been and i also know it hasnt worked

strome was our 2c on a team that went to the conference finals but i dont see anyone around here suggesting he is a 2c on a cup contender.

seems contradictive...

Well firstly, Copp didn't really play a whole lot of center for the rangers. Secondly, I know he was probably hurt but that 2nd line was hot dog shit in the playoffs. He may have some chemistry with Panarin, but it wasnt ground breaking. I wasnt against bringing Copp back, but that ship is completely sailed now, hes gone. Onward and upward.

We can this year but likely means chytil’s last season here is 2022-2023, perhaps lindy too
Got 23.6M currently set aside for next season with Lafreniere, Chytil, and Miller needing deals. Probably bridge contracts for Lafreniere and Miller.

A lot of teams are just trying to get through these next few seasons with the cap set to explode once the COVID debt is paid off by the players.

The middle class of free agency will be locking in for 2 years if they can, and so will a lot of RFAs. The bump from 83/84M next season to what is likely 92M the following season has teams just trying to get by for the next few seasons.

I like Copp but Trocheck is a better player. The Rangers also clearly did not see Copp as a center because they barely played him there despite the need. Also if you want to talk about contract years, Copp had his first 50 point season this year (Paarin bump)

Copp wants to play at home. $5m per is less than I expected so it kinda hurts, but there are better fits out there for us both long term and short term. Not to mention his concussion history.

I’ve got to think they don’t love Copp’s defense at center. Also I think the money will be significantly different. I imagine Copp in the high fives and I’m thinking Trocheck probably a million less per year. And he does exactly what they want him to do, round peg in a round hole. Just my guess.
